Attending a christening and not sure if this is OTT.

You can't go to a christening in a dress which is more fancy than the child's.mother will wear.

Surely christenings are for "Sunday best"?

quantumbutterfly · 08/02/2025 21:38

Newbie8918 · 08/02/2025 19:17

@quantumbutterfly to be fair, there is a quote in the bible about the wearing of mixed fabrics, so I'm surprised that no one has used this yet, as a reason to not wear the dress.

Thou shalt not wear viscose 🤣

Actual quote below.

Leviticus 19:19 ESV
You shall keep my statutes. You shall not let your cattle breed with a different kind. You shall not sow your field with two kinds of seed, nor shall you wear a garment of cloth made of two kinds of material.

😁funnily enough I was talking of literal interpretations of the bible with ds and wondering if the last Trump had been badly translated and we are actually in the end of days!!

In which case clothing choices seem a bit trivial.

MajorCarolDanvers · 08/02/2025 21:43

It’s a bit much for church

MoodySky · 08/02/2025 21:43

I really don't think that a church is the right venue for either of those dresses, nor a leather jacket.

Something a bit more daytime would be more fitting I think.

MumonabikeE5 · 08/02/2025 21:55

Well churches are pretty cold, so your thick overcoat will cover most of it. So there is that.

Newbie8918 · 08/02/2025 22:31

@quantumbutterfly I think that the responses on this thread show that mankind are indeed unable to agree on literally anything, so I think we'll be fine 🤣

😁🐎🐎🐎🐎You're probably right, I've never seen Trump on a horse, Putin used to like a bit of bare chested equine grandstanding though.

quantumbutterfly · 08/02/2025 22:43

Hope the christening goes well tomorrow and you feel happy & warm in your clothing choices and enjoy time with your friend & their family.

Matthew 7:1-3

  • *Judge not, that ye be not judged. 😉

Though of course, if we all lived like that AIBU would be tumbleweed.😁

Newbie8918 · 08/02/2025 22:43

@quantumbutterfly no amount of going to church and confession could make me unsee the Putin image! Shudder. 🤣

I have to laugh at all the frumps on here. I bet that they would dress in a 'smart top' and baggy trousers to their own wedding. I would far rather have someone dressed in the OP's green dress at my hypothetical baby's christening, than someone dressed like a boring frump. Not that I would really care either way: as you all say, it is about the baby, not about what people are wearing.

It's not about you though. You'll be in a church, with other congregants.

What do you mean 'it's not about me'? I wasn't saying it was. What do the 'other congregants' have to do with anything? Do you expect everyone to be wearing battleship grey with a 'tasteful pop of colour'? Boring.

myplace · 09/02/2025 11:06

I hope you update us on the dress code!

I’m a church regular. If the baby is a church regular, then the dress code is quite low key depending where the meal afterwards is.

If the baby isn’t regular, the dress code can be quite wedding y.

Yes, the shapeless top and baggy trousers look is favoured by all the 20 somethings at work. They also all wear beige. Dull.
I'm 65 and prefer something sharper and more fitted. Plus I like colour. The dark green dress is really nice.

BunnyLake · 09/02/2025 11:34

Wouldn’t someone just wear something they’d wear if they were going to a special mass (what they used to call Sunday best). Smart casual? It’s too dressy in my opinion.

KnickerlessParsons · 09/02/2025 11:42

I didn't mean " you" as in the actual "you". I meant people generally. People need to respect the customs of the place they're in. Both those dresses were not suitable for a church christening.

But you said "I would far rather have someone dressed in the OP's green dress at my hypothetical baby's christening, than someone dressed like a boring frump"

And I'm saying that's not the right attitude

Right attitude for what? You're wrong, anyway. In a lot of cultures, the OP's dress would be perfect for a celebratory event held in a church. The dull, baggy, frumpy look would be what was seen as out of place and even disrespectful. I would understand if OP's dress was super revealing, but it isn't. It just isn't a shapeless sack. It is perfectly elegant and tasteful.

'Too dressy'? No. And if you think that is too dressy, what's your idea of 'Sunday best'? Jeans and a 'nice top'?

GretchenWienersHair · 09/02/2025 12:24

Christenings in my family/culture are generally quite big, dressy events, so to me it looks perfect for that sort of function. But you’ll know what your people do best!

howling! who are
all these boring dressed people? I never encounter them, everyone I know would dress up for a christening, the green dress is fab.

You sound like me! God these people are boring. I'm so glad that they aren't my friends/family.

DappledThings · 09/02/2025 12:36

No idea why anyone's mentioning grey or beige or shapelessness. The green colour is fine. It's the evening wedding vibe of the lace and length combo that makes it OTT. It's not a cocktail party.

Colours of all descriptions would all be fine.

quantumbutterfly · 09/02/2025 12:41

Just thinking of the baptists I know and wondering if a swimsuit and dry robe would be appropriate😂

There are so many flavours of congregation.

I could see my breath in church this morning. A dryrobe would have been lovely!

Your comments miss the point completely. A christening is a religious occasion welcoming a child into the church family. Church members (if it’s CofE) wear ordinary day clothes. For some that will be ‘boring and frumpy’ as you so charmingly put it, but some church members will be trendy or gothy or hipstery but nobody, in any church I’ve ever been to typically wears blingy evening wear.
