Taxi costs split - who should pay

Just wondering if I’m being an arse for thinking this so would like opinions!

Going on holiday soon with a good friend and my two teens (ds14, dd16) 2 week package longhaul, can’t wait.

We were discussing costs/kitty etc the other day and she said that we’d need to get taxis round and about quite a bit (she’s been several times before so knows the score) and we can just split the cost 4 ways and I pay 3 lots and she’ll pay 1. I was a bit surprised, I fully expect when we go for dinner, trips etc to pay for me and the kids but for taxis I would have just split it between me and her, if it was her with the kids I would never have suggested a 4 way split for taxis.

YABU - there’s 4 of you, so split 4 ways, she shouldn’t have to pay for your kids taxi
YANBU - that’s tight, it should just be split between the adults

I think the same as you....50/50 for the taxi. As you said, food in restaurants and such like is a different matter.

CeffylCoch · 06/02/2025 17:51

I agree with you

Knackered1 · 06/02/2025 17:51

Depending on where you are going, the taxi may have charges per head.

Floranan · 06/02/2025 17:51

I’m with you, taxi 50/50 you pay for the kids on other things. Basically if you it’s something we’re the kids don’t add to the cost it’s 50/50

I have been to the country a few times myself (but not that area) and it’s just a price for the destination

The kids are teens, so adult size, so I agree with friend.

TunnocksOrDeath · 06/02/2025 17:54

If the local cabs don't take passengers in the front, will you need to book bigger more expensive cars for 4 versus 2 passengers?

TheFunHare · 06/02/2025 17:54

I'd say in that case we may as well take our own taxi as it will be more comfortable with a bit more space 😉 I actually wouldn't. I'd probably just suck it up to not cause a row but I think she's being cheeky.

ChonkyRabbit · 06/02/2025 17:55

50/50

If the teens weren't there you would still pay the same cost for the taxi. Whereas if they weren't there you'd pay a lot less for food, so food should be 75/25.

Coffeeishot · 06/02/2025 17:55

I'd go 50/50 it doesn't really matter how many in each family it's a taxi ride get it sorted maybe have a kitty in place for travel before you go incase it becomes a thing and ruins your holiday.

Fountofwisdom · 06/02/2025 17:55

50/50 on the taxis, as it would be the same fare if it was just the 2 adults, so the children are not costing extra. Meals and other costs which are per head are of course a different matter as you already said. However, if the adults are drinking alcohol with meals, that should be split 50/50, not just lumped in with the total meal where you’re expected to pay 75%.

Slightly tricky conversation to have with your friend about the taxis, but get it sorted now before you go, otherwise it will be a real bone of contention, and potentially costly if you have to use a lot of taxis.

ChonkyRabbit · 06/02/2025 17:56

Snowmanscarf · 06/02/2025 17:53

The kids are teens, so adult size, so I agree with friend.

If the taxi charges per adult-size person. Otherwise why does it matter?

Comewhatmay25 · 06/02/2025 17:56

Its not fair to force someone to pay more than their share. If she offered that would be great, but you cant hold it against her that she doesn't want to pay for your kids.

Holdonforsummer · 06/02/2025 17:56

I agree with your friend - taxis will likely be more expensive with four passengers than with two

Oh they definitely take them in the front. It’s the kind of country they would take them on the roof/hanging out the door! 🤣

YANBU if I was paying 3/4 of the cost of a taxi I think I'd just take the whole taxi myself, pay the full amount and have a bit more space.

Londonrach1 · 06/02/2025 17:57

Half half on taxi.....you pay for food that you eat ...tbh if she wants you to pay that much just go by taxi yourself....

Hecatoncheires · 06/02/2025 17:58

Just another vote for 50/50. As others have said, the cost is per-ride not per-person. Meals, days out, etc, are different. Hope you get it sorted.

Springflowersmakeforbetterhours · 06/02/2025 18:00

Wow she is seeing £££ going with you op. In our family earning adults pay their way and dc costs are absorbed by the adults...IE for accommodation /fuel .. Food and entry places me and dh pay the dc's way. A holiday starting off this way doesn't bode well for you op.

user2848502016 · 06/02/2025 18:00

I'd have thought 50/50 too - that's assuming they charge per journey not per person where you're going?

Anywherebuthere · 06/02/2025 18:05

50/50 Taxis dont usually charge per person do they. 75/25 if it is per person.

Definately 75/25 for food and ticket entry to places and so on.

OpenFox · 06/02/2025 18:06

I'd say 50/50 for taxis, then for entrance fees and food you obviously pay 75% (unless kids are cheaper to get in somewhere).

As if you got separate taxis, the cost would be 50/50, as you and the kids would take one taxi, and she would take another. By sharing you're just pooling the cost.

purpleme12 · 06/02/2025 18:08

I've never seen such an obvious thread 😂
Yes of course you're right OP
She just be trying to get out of it!!!

Livelaughlurgy · 06/02/2025 18:12

To be devils advocate.... if you're doing a kitty would everything not just come out of it? So that's the 3:1 ratio? Rather than working it out each time?

If it's a seperate budget I'd suggest someone pay there and someone pay home.

Oh I feel vindicated! I thought I was definitely in the wrong for thinking my way!! 😄
