Every day waking up to yet another insane declaration from Trump. America is losing the respect of the world

It's like a parallel universe - how did America come to this? So now he plans to ethnically cleanse Gaza we are told - to create the 'Riviera of the Middle East.' A golf course and hotels probably. The £2 million people can just go wherever. Wtf! AIBU to think America is imploding in on itself?

The amount of media time given to his incoherent ramblings is insane. How did America come to this?

By several million people voting for him. Which I think is more worrying. They've given him the green light to do what he wants.
That's how it has come to this.

Mittens67 · 05/02/2025 17:53

I am torn between horror and hysterical laughter everyday.
I console myself that at least I don’t have the embarrassment of being American.
I don’t think anybody will ever take them seriously again. Even if (fingers crossed) sanity returns at some point and their tangoed leader is removed they have as a nation shown that the country is full of idiots.
Poor buggers who didn’t vote for this.

We knew he was going to be like this. He knows most of it won’t happen. It’s to wind up the liberals and rev up his supporters. The best thing we could all do is pay him no attention. I know it’s difficult when it’s all over the media but you don’t have to read the detail. Catch a headline, roll your eyes, get on with your life. You’ll feel better for it.

Absolutely this. It's all waffle. Sadly the media won't stop reporting on him as it's click bait.

ExtraOnions · 05/02/2025 17:55

The rest of the world will learn to work around the USA, and end up less reliant on it. They will lose the power that they currently have (which is what happens with all bullies)

..and when they have picked all the low-hanging fruit of immigration, and foreign aid .. they will start coming after American citizens, and I would not be suprised to see a Civil War.

I think America’s international reputation will recover one day, but not in my lifetime. Ah well.

I don't think a lot of what Trump says is meant literally. Often it's very notional and undeveloped, or deliberately hyperbolic, but I don't think it's always as far out as people might think.

Most of his stuff about Canada isn't, for example, it's about negotiating the deal he wants. He's said that he means an economic union, which I suppose might look something like the EU, though the US is so much bigger they would inevitably be running the show.

The Gaza proposal - I don't know, at this point, what is the end-game for Israel? Frankly, it's difficult to see how there will be a place for Palestinians to live when they are done. Golf courses, however, don't seem probable.

IkeaJesusChrist · 05/02/2025 18:00

I believe that America will find itself very isolated very soon.

Humdingerydoo · 05/02/2025 18:00

He's a fucking idiot.

I'm pretty sure he's just saying all this utter nonsense in an effort to build up to something he actually wants which under normal circumstances would sound absolutely bananas but compared to everything he's said the last couple of weeks sounds delightfully normal and reasonable. As a result, he'll get away with whatever it is he wants.

I mean, I'm a Zionist and I think his Gaza proposal is beyond insane.

Reallybadidea · 05/02/2025 18:04

The only good thing from my point of view is that it makes the British voting for Brexit look less mental in comparison.

Although I'm also worried about how many in this country think he's great and will be voting for Reform.

In his press briefing with Netanyahu even Netanyahu himself was looking bemused. He’s a live narcissist, the real thing, and he’s terrifying.

Him being part of a conversation about ethnic cleansing was disgusting.

Echobelly · 05/02/2025 18:05

I think Trump genuinely believes that no one else has ever thought of Palestinian people being moved elsewhere. Duh! Why has no one else ever thought of that?!

He has no clue that this has been proved an impossible and unethical 'solution' for decades now.

I hope most of his nonsense doesn't happen (I don't think the Gaza thing will, TBH, there is waaaay too much in the way between the warblings of his brain and that being a possibility) but it remains to be seen how much he gets away with in the coming months, because if he is allowed to things are going to get incredibly horrible.

delvan · 05/02/2025 18:07

It's the people whispering in his ears that I am concerned about.

This is what worries me too.

I think it's likely that global capital, including Musk and his now-unashamed-propaganda engine are gearing up to do everything they can to make sure the UK elects an oligarch-friendly neo-fascist at the next elections.

My only hope is that it's as well our elections were shortly before the US, hopefully it can be pointed out how Godawful things are there. And they will be.

I mean, they'll be great for billionaires and big businesses who will probably turn ever more massive profits; bad for the middle classes and actively dangerous to women, the poor, people of colour and LGBTQ+ people.

Princessconsuelabananahammock9 · 05/02/2025 18:09

Canadian here and terrified.

I think he is looking to destabilize the Middle East, which will result in terrorist attacks on American soil, and then use that fear to further remove American rights in the name of protecting them.

Elon is fucking crazy and he is looking for complete chaos and anarchy.

I think this is really naive.
What he says matters because it changes the global conversation.
On the news right now they are asking ‘is Trumps Gaza plan possible? could it be done’ on the bloody BBC of all places

TheTecknician · 05/02/2025 18:10

Donald Trump is many things but he just isn't a statesman. He has become a parody of himself.

suburberphobe · 05/02/2025 18:13

now he plans to ethnically cleanse Gaza we are told

Poor choice of words.....

He wants the Palestinians from Gaza to be replaced to Jordan and Egypt.

Yes, he's totally off his rocker. God help the world.

StandFirm · 05/02/2025 18:13

Again, I suspect the aim is to make authoritarian leaders seem sane in comparison. This is ideological. We are watching the suicide of liberal democracies. I think it's deliberate - to desensitise all of us (and remove any notion of 'normal')

Reallybadidea · 05/02/2025 18:16

I would recommend the BBC podcast The Coming Storm to understand (a bit) how we got here. Although with the caveat that it's absolutely terrifying and makes me feel quite bleak about the future for democracy.

He was elected by Americans to serve America. Really doesn’t matter what any of us overseas think -he is not our leader.

Definitely. I hate this "leader of the free world" bullshit.

Israel had always been open about it's end game, no Palestinians at all in Israel. Certainly that's been the stated aim of the right wing government forever, it's not like they have hidden the fact and the state sanctioned murder of West Bank citizens is happening every day now.

With Canada and Mexico he’s got the same deal on tariffs which were already in place!

That is ethnic cleansing, so ethnic cleansing is therefore an accurate and not a poor choice of words
