DD demanding chocolate when she's on her period

Homeymum2 · 04/02/2025 16:35

My 14 yo DD insists that all her friends parents buy them chocolates and pamper them when they are cycling -

I'm being told I'm a terrible mum and badgered for chocolates

Am I an outlier to not cater to this?

Well, OP people are saying similar stuff on your thread about make up remover. Are you just tight fisted?

Hdjdb42 · 04/02/2025 18:16

I always buy myself and my teenage daughters a bar of dairy milk each month. When they're on their period, they help themselves. Periods are horrible, chocolate makes it so much more bearable.

Just had a look in my cupboard....we've got twirls, galaxy ripples, toffee crisps, mint aeros and freddo bars. There's also a chocolate fudge cake and come chocolate cookies.

I'm sure it would make the anti upf crew faint!

When can I come over ?l 😆

Wow! I've never had this much traction with a post before -

Everyone got copious amounts of chocolate at Christmas - she's eaten all hers and wants some of mine now because she's on her period or would like me to make a special purchase ...

Anyway - I've now shared some -

So you were objecting to sharing your chocolate with your daughter and/or buying some for her? How do you think this makes you sound any better?

DD (14) is very private. On the odd occasion she has misjudged her supplies she'll message and ask me to pick stuff up for her, or if something has stained she'll put it in the wash/spray stain remover or whatever and then text me to tell me or ask for help.

I'll message her every time I do a Tesco shop and ask if she needs anything.

She wouldn't want to be pampered or whatever, but if she did it'd be no big deal and I would. If it was part of a bigger pattern of not having much resilience etc I'd encourage healthier coping mechanisms etc, but otherwise why wouldn't I?

If I asked DH to grab me a bar of chocolate and run me a bath cause I was feeling crap for whatever reason id expect him to say yes, regardless. And he would. As I would for him!

Sheknowsaboutme · 04/02/2025 18:19

Fuck me OP. You’re as tight one! Seriously, its not cocaine. Its chocolate, which is un supply in most houses.

you’re creating problems here.

Quinlan · 04/02/2025 18:19

Christmas was a month ago and she is a teenager for God’s sake. Of course she ate her Christmas chocolate!

How tight do you need to be to not buy any treats for the house during the weekly shop?

Fizbosshoes · 04/02/2025 18:19

It is a state of emergency if there is no nice chocolate in our house (thorntons or milk way don't qualify) and I would go out and buy some - at any time up to about 10pm - regardless of my own or DDs menstrual cycle.

I barely get periods because I'm on the coil but I eat chocolate every day anyway. DD (18) probably eats more when she's on her period. She has always had bad cramps so she gets sympathy, appropriate medication, and chocolate but I've not heard of a period box, pamper evenings, or movie nights for periods.

RaveToTheGrave1 · 04/02/2025 18:19

I always need chocolate on my period, common sense cos it helps with the pain

Thegiantofillinois · 04/02/2025 18:19

Christ, dd is on her 3rd period ever and I only know about it when the box in the bathroom is left open!
We're a no fuss house here. If she wants chocolate, there's usually plenty in the fridge. Or the shop.

You are 30 years old this is a kid aged 14.

Oh i wish i was 30.No issue with the chocolate and a cuddle but think period pamper sessions every month is over the top.

Sofrustratedwithmyself · 04/02/2025 18:22

We always have chocolate in the house - do other people not? Me and DD eat chocolate every day and she has more when she’s on her period. I wouldn’t have to buy it for her because it’s there and she can help herself and self-regulate, as can I…

Crazybaby123 · 04/02/2025 18:23

I like chocolate when I am on my period, but I was never 'treated' just because i was on my period. Can you order some in the monthly shop, we always have treat snacks in the house for when we are feeling like a treat??

Person1234 · 04/02/2025 18:23

Jesus, she's asking for chocolate, not a diamond tiara. Buy her some chocolate. What's the big deal?

northwestgirl · 04/02/2025 18:24

when did chocolate become a cure for period pain?
this was not a thing in the 70s

JandamiHash · 04/02/2025 18:25

NiftyKoala · 04/02/2025 17:51

My mom always had some in the house. Now I do that for my daughter. Couldn't you get some mini bars to give?

Mini bars of crack cocaine?

Flick8 · 04/02/2025 18:25

Sure it's been said many times but many women crave chocolate on their period. Isn't it because of magnesium or something? It's just some chocolate for a teenager FGS. I don't agree with being overly restrictive like this. I've seen this happen and the kids have either become addicted to fizzy drink (only allowed rarely on school holidays previously) or gained weight extremely quickly at university with freedom to spend their loan on as many takeaways and junk as they liked.

I know a mum in a toddler group who won't even let her child have trace sugar in things like yoghurt which obviously have benefits like calcium. Each to their own how they parent but I think restrictive views on food and having banned foods are just as damaging as gorging on "bad" food.

Go and buy some! Christmas was week ago why do you still have chocolate lying around?

diddl · 04/02/2025 18:25

Nope, we rarely do.

Never ate it particularly when on periods either, nor does daughter.

Normallynumb · 04/02/2025 18:25

Pampering no but surely you show love and care towards your own DD especially at her TOTM and make sure she has everything she needs?
Demanding chocolate isn't on, but surely you can throw a big bar and some paracetamol in your trolley?
I only have sons but even if a friend was staying on her period I would get sanitary supplies and " treats" in
I hate the word treats applied to food and drinks

Dollshousedolly · 04/02/2025 18:25

You sound a real bundle of joy.

notacooldad · 04/02/2025 18:26

Maybe I’m a bit weird but surely there is chocolate available in the house? I mean, not loads but it’s a pretty normal thing to have in the snacky box for when someone fancies a treat snack
We have never had chocolate ( or ' just in case' snacks such as crisps or biscuits) in the house.
I'm not anti chocolate or against snacks but we don't just have them in as part of our weekly shop.

diddl · 04/02/2025 18:27

Christmas was week ago why do you still have chocolate lying around?

Presumably because she hasn't eaten it all yet!

Why is that so odd?
