Stop buying American goods after Trump imposed 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico

Stop buying American goods after Trump imposed 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico.

He says it’s because of phen and illegal immigration - less than 1% come from Canada.

This will have significant implications for the Canadian economy, the American economy and by domino the world. Not to mention the fact it could start a significant trade war.

The US doesn’t subsidise Canada - they buy Canadian goods. Approx 40% of their crude oil comes from Canada for example.

There is also an agreed trade deal between the US/Canada and Mexico that Trump agreed to and signed in his first years in office.

YABU - it doesn’t matter to me
YANBU - let’s stand up to a bully and support our allies

It is illegal to get off a boat in Dover and disappear into Kent. This is a crime.

There are official channels to claim asylum in the UK. The majority chose not to tee them.

Oh please do tell us about the legal channels. Or even a couple of them.

I am not sure if he will include UK in his personal definition of EU.

Does he still own golf courses in Scotland? That might affect his decisions.

What I am confused about is his comments about continuing to use fossil fuels etc and distancing himself from climate change etc. Is that stance at odds with Tesla and their green electric vehicles?

He's coming for us.
Or Musk is.

Because of regulations over social media. And Musk hates Starmer - and as it seems Musk is running the US now, he's going to target the UK as well.

I think everyone should boycott Shein and Temu.

Agreed. I do!

You'll be crying when it causes more inflation and your utility and food bill goes up again. No doubt you'll be blaming some refugees though who have naff all to do with it.

I'll be fine but thanks for your concern.

Do you live in Spain?

😂 he's a chop.

I can only think he was going through the letters - B for Bertie, R for rabbit and when he got to S,...ah must be Spain.

19.5kgs of fentanyl was intercepted moving from Canada to the US last year. Basically 2 big babies worth. Next to nothing. It is estimated that more illegals enter Canada from the US than the other way around.

Trumps justification for the tariffs is completely nonsensical, which is par for the course. I've read that a large part of the eastern seaboard is powered by Canadian electricity (hydroelectric etc), and if they decide to turn it would plunge millions of people into darkness. If this includes the White House, then hopefully they do it!

I love the idea of big babies as a unit of measurement. Grin

What are they, @Potsofpetals ?

If I wished to escape Afghanistan, Sudan or Congo how would I go about that, please?

He has to have a hard line to stop illegal immigration so I'm fine with it.

But it is for the Americans to invest in and protect their own borders. Why would he expect a foreign country to protect his country’s border? Like the stupid wall idea that he expected Mexico to pay for. Let him and his billionaire tech bros pay for it.

Pat888 · 02/02/2025 11:23

Well stop buying on Amazon -I’m not sure what rate of tax they pay in California but stop using Amazon, Netflix,Fb if you want to affect revenue in the US

You said they were criminals for entering the country. Which is not the case. Yes disappearing is a criminal offence but you did not say that. You further went on to say that they should be exterminated... A statement that has caused your post to be deleted.

You are now asserting that the majority of people do not use legal channels.. I would like to see your sources for that claim.

Good luck finding some US manufactured goods to boycott. Almost everything seems to be made in China these days, which is what Trump's policy is really about. Either way, the US isn't our enemy, so I am not in favour of escalating a trade war with them by supporting boycotts of their goods at national level.

crackofdoom · 02/02/2025 11:23

It would be interesting if America were to impose tariffs on most of the rest of the world and these tariffs were reciprocated, but nobody imposed tariffs on anyone else. Surely, over the course of a few years, global trade would recover and reshape itself, just cutting America out? 🤔

XWKD · 02/02/2025 11:23

I can't think of anything made in America that I'd be buying anyway, so it doesn't make much difference to me.

cakeorwine · 02/02/2025 11:23

I do think it's going to make people wary of developing trade relationships with the US - nothing makes you seem like a unreliable trade partner if you destroy trade agreements and impose tariffs when you have been trading successfully for years.

America used to be isolationist so I guess they can cope if they have to.

Is Canada our friend?
A Commonwealth country.
Helped us out massively in WW2.

(Just like the US did as well)

In fact, maybe that's what he's wanting in the end, protectionism.

You have to physically be in the uk to claim asylum. You can’t claim it from outside the uk. One of the biggest problems is the Uk is way too slow at hearing cases to determine whether someone has the right to be in the country.

I now want the police to start using it as standard.

How many babies is 2300kg?

Dozens of banana crates line the floor of a Tottenham warehouse - police had suspected the shipment contained cocaine.

Gang smuggled £200m of cocaine into UK in Columbian banana boxes

Police seized more than two tonnes of the Class A drug which had been exported from Colombia to the UK in 2021.

You present yourself to a border officer at an official point of entry so you can be processed and screened properly. It really isn’t hard.

Dover beach by a dinghy is not an official point of entry.

I live in hope of there being a ‘gotcha’ moment when it all falls down for that narcissistic man baby and they have to admit they were wrong. But sadly I don’t think that will happen.
