Stop buying American goods after Trump imposed 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico

Stop buying American goods after Trump imposed 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico.

He says it’s because of phen and illegal immigration - less than 1% come from Canada.

This will have significant implications for the Canadian economy, the American economy and by domino the world. Not to mention the fact it could start a significant trade war.

The US doesn’t subsidise Canada - they buy Canadian goods. Approx 40% of their crude oil comes from Canada for example.

There is also an agreed trade deal between the US/Canada and Mexico that Trump agreed to and signed in his first years in office.

YABU - it doesn’t matter to me
YANBU - let’s stand up to a bully and support our allies

Indeed not.

Posted from my phone made in China.

And where did the rare minerals in the phone come from?
The metal?

China has been making inroads to other countries to get access to such things.

Global trade, raw materials, access to raw materials, the skills required to make them, the knowledge

It's all very complicated.

I remember the issue with US cars and how many components were shipped across the borders back and forth until the final car was made.

So putting a tariff on goods from the EU?

Is that what you're suggesting?

Deljay · 02/02/2025 11:03

Phineyj · 02/02/2025 10:50

Those things you mention @Deljay depend on a heap of intellectual property which can, and is, valued and appears on the financial account of the balance of payments of the USA. When financial bods mention "market capitalisation" of e.g. KFC or Google there are actual valuations involved.

Er, yes. I know.

I don't think you're really picking up what I'm putting down.

It is not illegal to enter a country and claim asylum. It is illegal to remain in a country once your asylum application has been determined and refused. It is also illegal to overstay your visa.

People entering a country are not by definition criminals and even if they were extermination is a very hard line to take. We don't have capital punishment in the UK for far more violent crimes than a visa violation.

Possibly a stupid question.... but as he "only" put 10% on fuel , why not increase that internally to 25%/40% and sell your fuel elsewhere? Practical or dumb?

On a side note, what's the chances of Carney getting elected, or is Canada likely to swing more right wing, just wondering how this might shift again as leaderships change?

No it’s a good question! Geographically it has been easy to supply to the US and there are pipelines etc which make this easier, but yes we should be looking to sell elsewhere especially to the UK and Europe where the pound and euro are stronger than the Canadian dollar.

So Trudeau has resigned and Canada has a similar parliamentary system to the UK. The Liberals (Trudeau party) will have to elect a new leader which is currently looking like Mark Carney is the favourite. There will then be an election to follow. Carney has been very very firm in his approach to the US so even if the Liberals are re-elected (looking less likely as they are trailing the Conservatives by some margin) it looks like a strong line. As long as we are holding a hard line no matter the leader the better.

I didn't say it wouldn't impact the UK, I just don't think there's any point boycotting American goods or believe that it would mitigate the effects. At its worse, it could create a deficit in trade between us and the US and create an incentive to slap tariffs on us as well.

Actually you said "it doesn't matter to me". Which is what people called simplistic.

I wouldn’t care less. Who I do care about is Rhiannon Skye Whyte who was stabbed in the neck by an 18 year old illegal immigrant. She was 27 years old.

Let me know how many examples you would like to counteract your argument.

Floppyzebra · 02/02/2025 11:11

Suppose there are fast food chains, phones, coffee shops etc...

Upstartled · 02/02/2025 11:11

Well the op had Yabu - it doesn't matter to me or Yanbu - I will stand up and support allies (presumably by supporting a boycott of American products outlined in the op). My response was a little tongue in cheek @Tisthedamnseason

TheFrendo · 02/02/2025 11:12

No netflix, microsoft, apple, US tv & film, facebook, google, intel, amazon?

I don't think so.

SerendipityJane · 02/02/2025 11:13

Coming off Twitter would probably be the biggest response. Followed by Facebook.

At @mumsnet. Why did you delete my comment calling illegal immigrants criminals. By definition this is what they are. The have crossed a border illegally. Is the dictionary incorrect now?

He's said he is imposing 100% tarrifs on BRICS countries. I'm in one of them.

I'm not sure he's realised this will go both ways then.

He thought Spain was a BRICS country.

devastatedagain · 02/02/2025 11:15

Nothing will change here in the uk. 3 years after Russia invaded Ukraine you can still buy vodka in the supermarket.

Cost and availability make American and Chinese products the default in the UK

We can't pay people a UK wage and make goods cheap enough to satisfy the UK market .....

Thing are Usually ordered via American owned companies

However even small changes can hurt - a company losing a few % of sales rather than growing will usually panic

Exactly. Consider American beers as a start.

You talked about exterminating them.

It is illegal to get off a boat in Dover and disappear into Kent. This is a crime.

There are official channels to claim asylum in the UK. The majority chose not to tee them.

Floppyzebra · 02/02/2025 11:17

Because you quote was ignorant and naive. There are more Americans illegally crossing the Canadian border than the other way around. That’s a fact. This isn’t about immigration. It never was.

I think he'd already said something about EU next.

I am not sure if he will include UK in his personal definition of EU.

Does he still own golf courses in Scotland? That might affect his decisions.

What I am confused about is his comments about continuing to use fossil fuels etc and distancing himself from climate change etc. Is that stance at odds with Tesla and their green electric vehicles?

Moonlightstars · 02/02/2025 11:19

Floppyzebra · 02/02/2025 09:55

He has to have a hard line to stop illegal immigration so I'm fine with it.

You'll be crying when it causes more inflation and your utility and food bill goes up again. No doubt you'll be blaming some refugees though who have naff all to do with it.

2dogsandabudgie · 02/02/2025 11:19

I think everyone should boycott Shein and Temu.

Januarybirthdaysarehardtomakefun · 02/02/2025 11:19

It would be very hard to avoid US products in the UK. Big pharmaceutical companies/Tech/food etc Football clubs part owned or owned by US companies .
