Stop buying American goods after Trump imposed 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico

Stop buying American goods after Trump imposed 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico.

He says it’s because of phen and illegal immigration - less than 1% come from Canada.

This will have significant implications for the Canadian economy, the American economy and by domino the world. Not to mention the fact it could start a significant trade war.

The US doesn’t subsidise Canada - they buy Canadian goods. Approx 40% of their crude oil comes from Canada for example.

There is also an agreed trade deal between the US/Canada and Mexico that Trump agreed to and signed in his first years in office.

YABU - it doesn’t matter to me
YANBU - let’s stand up to a bully and support our allies

As for American brands like Coca-Cola and MacDonalds I'm not bothered anyway. Essential medicines I am. There are some things we can't boycott.

It seems Mr Musk is just giving Trump the rope. That man is upto something. I'm not on X, but I wouldn't be now if I was.

He’s doing a great job for USA people - on a blind test well over half of all brits said they really liked his policies! Until he hurts us I will continue to support USA 🇺🇸 🇬🇧

I wonder just how many of those tested actually know what his policies are. Have they read project 2025? How many in the UK would be happy with a billionaire raiding taxpayers money to fund his Mars project, stop social security, tax credits and any other additional supporting programmes. Maybe they would like research programmes stopped and child cancer monies stopped, or maybe it would be allowing said millionaire to be able to access all your financial data ..to hell with gdpr breaches. They have already stopped calendar days to mark MLK and holocaust, and removed black history education.

Project 2025 by the way is a real picnic if you are a woman, restrictions around contraception and if you have the grave misfortune to be miscarrying the doctors won't intervene in case they get accused of terminating the child.

Be careful what you wish for. Trump doesn't give a damn about Americans he is a rascist dangerous megalomaniac funded by another rascist dangerous megalomaniac.

I too think that Musk is more damaging than Trump, mainly because at least Trump has a degree of constitutional checks and balances imposed on him.

Does he ?

Where do all constitutional decisions end up ?

Only takes SCOTUS to extend their notions that the constitution is advisory (or wrong) and then where are you ?

Isn't Trump already instructing federal agencies to ignore court rulings ?

I agree 100% about his policies about women - disgraceful. However, even then he’s still light years ahead of Middle East, Africa, lots of Asia etc.

SinnerBoy · 04/02/2025 16:08

Donald Trump, he's not quite as bad as gge Saudis, or the Taliban.

High praise indeed!

TopPocketFind · 04/02/2025 16:25

I don't know, covering the photos of Women of American Cryptology in the National Cryptologic Museum is something the taliban would support

Yeah supporting the reversal of Roe v Wade was a good step forward for women’s rights 🤦‍♀️

Agreed. I would never suggest that someone should risk their health and would always support the best treatment no matter what.

Even Fox news cottoned on that Trumps "victory" over Canada and Mexico may not be all it's trumped up to be

This is why trump got in...people who only see the showboating and the big talk boasting but don't see below the bluster that it is all bull shit. He doesn't care about fentanyl or guns or Americans he is back in because otherwise he would be in jail. He needed to win and before the inauguration he had floated his and melanias meme coins....did you know he has a company (wlf) currently wheeling and dealing crypto ...basically he is earning money on the job and probably has insider knowledge. Can you imagine if Starmer had a bit of that going on.

I can't write on here exactly how.i feel about trump and Musk...I would be banned but if trumps world is what you aspire to then expect to be shit upon because that's what he is really good at.

Love him or hate him Trump is doing what he thinks is best for his country and it's people. It's a shame our UK government don't do the same for us instead of pandering to the EU all the time.

Absolutely this.

But ok to pander to the US?
To China?
Why this anybody-but-the-EU attitude? How exactly do we benefit from it?

Courgetteandbeans · 04/02/2025 17:41

I would love to boycot items from the US but I honestly don't know what I buy that comes from there. I check labels and I don't ever recall seeing made in the USA. Any suggestions so I can feel like I'm sticking two fingers up at the tangerine tyrant?

OneLemonDog · 04/02/2025 17:47

I did my first no-US-goods shop yesterday. Admittedly, I'm in Canada, but most of my regular brands were from the US. I won't be switching back anytime soon, even if it costs me more in the short-term. I think many Canadians, from accross the political spectrum, feel similarly.

Are there not ethical investors who allow you to chose how your money is invested ?

Of no real import to the little person. However if that little person starts to make a nuisance of themselves by asking their bank or other financial institutions if they actively invest in <insert ethical choice here> can sometimes help. If in no other way that it will signal to a grifter somewhere that there is money to be made in being anti-<insert ethical choice here>.

That said, remember that his Lord High Musk would regard that as the act of a criminal. In fact he might just have wanted all the US social security data to see who is avoiding being on Twitter. Remember he is suing companies who have chosen not to advertise on that fetid swamp of putrid hatemongering that is amok with trolls, molls* and bellyaches.

*Stuck for a rhyme, but liked the reference.

My late DM would be with you - she boycotted South African produce from before I was born. My Uncle (her brother) had terrible tales from his time in the merchant navy and stops in South Africa.

I feel sorry for any Tesla owners who are losing on their resale value. (Although my experience of Tesla owners is they would never sell their precious ....)

(transcribed by ChatGPT from an image)

Some European numbers for Tesla sales/registrations for January 2025 (YoY) are being published and it's brutal:
France: -63.4%, Spain: -75.4%, Norway: -40.2%, Sweden: -46.0%, Netherlands: -42.5%, UK: -18.2%
Maybe Europeans DO start paying attention to what Elon Musk is doing.

I think it is interesting and telling that the import taxes on China are proposed lower- the reality being that many ‘US products’ are in fact made in China (looking at you apple).

Abhannmor · 04/02/2025 18:38

Just need to be selective. Tesla would be a good place to start. This whole 'trade war' seems a bit off. More like a scam to crash the share price and buy while it's cheap. Of course for that to work you'd have to know the prices will bounce back- like if you knew your pal in the WH was going to call the 'trade war' off ?

And it all serves as a dead cat while the Muskovites seize everyone's personal data. I think the Coup is more important to Trump than the phoney war.
