Does the Uk Have to to many dogs?

I was out earlier. I was about to put some rubbish in the public bin but there I noticed it was filled to the brim with dog poo bags. I have noticed now days there seems to be dogs mess every where. It seems there are more dogs about since covid. I am curious if this can pose health risk for public.

I don’t dislike dogs and have owned them in the past, however, since Covid the number of dogs has gone nuts. I wouldn’t mind but some owners can never seem to leave them at home. Even the local church had to put up a sign over Christmas holidays asking owners to leave them at home as people were bringing them for carol singing. People never used to be like this with dogs. It’s weird.

Livelovebehappy · 03/02/2025 19:58

Tbh thats a positive that the bins were full of poo bags, as it means people are cleaning up after their dogs. I think the fact that theyre full to brimming is more likely due to reduced bin emptying by the councils. I've complained a few times to the council re issues of overflowing bins where we live. It's contributing to people littering. But whilst theyre happy to put in requests for increased council tax, they don't want to provide basic services. Labour run....

I would like less people and more dogs.

Absolutely! Look what damage the human race is doing to the world. Look at the UK - over populated and crime ridden.

Ugh. Where are the dog wardens? Why aren't these people being issued with fines?

I have never seen a dog warden here. Nor has anyone I know. I think that's partly why so many people let their dogs shit everywhere with impunity.
I am now going to keep on reporting though, and hope the council realise something needs to be done here.

I agree because it can't go on like this. Write to your council and ask them to put "clean up after your dog or you'll be fined" signs up on the street where you live, ask them where the dog wardens are. Suggest they come and have a look at the state of the place or send them photos. If you get no joy, write to your local MP.

Parks are full of signs like that already. It makes no difference.
No dog wardens anymore due to lack of money. And the one dog warden in your town wont do anything unless they are their watching someone let their dog curl one out and leaving it anyway.
I have had to report stuff to a dog warden (dog on dog attack) and they were useless.

AIBot · 03/02/2025 23:58

The answer is a new compulsory dog licensing scheme. The proceeds from the licences should cover the costs of providing and dealing with the contents of dog poo bins, administering the licenses and the salaries of dog wardens. So that there is no burden to the general taxpayer.

A lot of general waste bins are also dog poo bins.
And recently I went to put a poo bag in a dedicated dog poo bin, and it was full of wine bottles.

We used to have a system like this and it was scrapped. The ones who would have a licence would be exactly the same ones who clean up after their dogs, have their dogs microchipped, which is also a requirement in law etc. We already pay substantial amounts of money in council tax per month which this should cover. The question is why aren't the councils where you live making this provision? And "cut backs" may be their default position but it has no legs when other councils are managing to provide it.

I also suspect there's a difference in regional culture at play here. In this part of the world, doo poo on pavements is about as socially acceptable as drink/drug driving and the perpetrators will be called out on it and we can be very, very direct. Is this a thing where you live or do people generally just keep quiet and suffer in silence?

Ravensperch · 04/02/2025 00:47

All I’m going to say here is,

”Woof snarl woof”. I’m outraged by your doggist hate speech. On behalf of me and me mates down the park, go find yourself a nice big stick. run around with it like you’ve just uncovered a Saxon burial site or something, then go home for nice long nap.
Kind Regards

Whydoyoucarewhatido · 04/02/2025 06:32

Dog ownership “takes away the better experience of people being there for one another”? Nice in theory, but in practice? A lot of people don’t have anyone “there” for them.
I absolutely support tighter restrictions on breeding and ownership but all the while people only want xyz breed or insist that they “just have one litter” from their pet dog, the numbers will keep increasing. As always, it’s a people problem, not a dog problem. These dogs are not breeding themselves.

The council do make this provision. But it should be dog owners only who cover the cost, it shouldn’t be put onto council tax.

That’s not how tax works. There’s lots of things I don’t make use of but have to pay for in tax, regardless.

Spidey66 · 04/02/2025 19:46

I pay taxes, but don't have kids, nor do I require social care. Why should I pay for schools or social services?

Ps not my real opinion. But a huge % does go o these services. Just as a % should go to street cleaning and street bin emptying.

So we all just pay for what we use? Excellent! As a net contributor by a standing mile, where do I claim my refund???

AIBot · 04/02/2025 23:01

No, we don’t just pay for what we use.

I’m fine with contributing towards important essentials like children’s services, adult social care, none of which I use.

Dog ownership is not a necessary thing and the cost of dog shit removal should fall on dog owners only.

My sentiments exactly. There are lots of services I don't use either, and I gladly contribute to those. I begrudge any tax pounds being spent on dogs, when there are far more worthy causes. I'd bring back youth centres and more homeless shelters, better pay for the working classes, free prescriptions, and many other worthy things, and not subsidise dog owners.

Spidey66 · 05/02/2025 12:02

I'm sure bins are full of nasty stuff "we" don't use. Dirty nappies, plastic bags full of vomit etc. What do you suggest, bins are analysed, parents pay a share for nappies, dog owners pay for poo bags?

Also there is on occasion piles of vomit on the pavement. I didn't do it, why should I pay for it to be cleaned up? At least dog owners (the majority, no what MN says) do clean up after their dogs.

No one is subsiding dog owners. They pay for the food, toys, grooming, vet care etc themselves. You are not paying a penny towards that.
You seem to be complaining that your council tax is going on emptying poo bins. Those poo bins are emptied by the same people, and at the same time, as the other bins in a park, and it all goes to the same place.
I don't use drugs, but I am not going to moan about the council clearing up syringes when they get reported.

@CindereIIa dog owners contribute hundreds of thousands of pounds to the economy and I’m pretty sure it’s a net gain compared to the local councils emptying bins containing dog poo, plastic food containers etc.’
Some people litter their takeaway food boxes and waste food which is pretty disgusting too. Not as bad as treading in dog poo but I know.

Indeed. The UK pet industry is worth £8.2 billion.
