I was out earlier. I was about to put some rubbish in the public bin but there I noticed it was filled to the brim with dog poo bags. I have noticed now days there seems to be dogs mess every where. It seems there are more dogs about since covid. I am curious if this can pose health risk for public.

There are certainly more dogs about since Covid, lots won’t pick up after their pet, unfortunately. But what do you propose is done about the increase in dogs?! Forced surrender?

If owners won’t pick up their dog’s mess, why should they be allowed to keep the dog?

Pytilla · 01/02/2025 18:21

Yes, too many in my opinion. You can't go anywhere without dogs all over the place. If you are not a dog lover it's really stressful

LemonadeSunshine · 01/02/2025 18:24

Yes, fed up of visits to 'dog friendly' cafes and restaurants being spoilt by whining, roaming and dog-smelling dogs. And before telling me to go somewhere else, this applies to all the outlets in the local area, not a single one excludes them.

Pytilla · 01/02/2025 18:26

I live in a pretty town that attracts walkers and their dogs. Nothing wrong with that per se, it's just the sheer volume of dogs the town is having to deal with. Dogs in cafes and food shops, barking and trying to scrap with each other, jumping up at kids with ice creams, tripping people with leads that are too long etc. it's impossible to walk on the pavements without having to dodge out of the way or step into the road to avoid tripping over a lead or have a dog jump up. It's extremely tiresome.

Spidey66 · 01/02/2025 18:29

Aahh another dog hating thread. Must be all of a few days since the last one!🤔🙄

I resent the suggestion that most owners don't pick up after their dog. In fact the vast majority take great care to be responsible and clean up. Even if we've gone out accidentally without bags, we'll get one from another dog owner or improvise with tissues etc.

It's threads like this which remind me why I prefer dogs to people. Dogs are way better! I think we need more dogs, not less!

Roughly 10.6 million dogs in the uk, think how many plastic bags full of poo going to landfill in a week that is - not to mention all the people who don't bother picking it up and leave it for others to step in. Around 11 million cats killing between 160 and 270 million wild animals, mostly birds. Cats are one of the biggest threats to wildlife in the UK.

Far too many dogs and too many cats.

The poo bags are biodegradable like food caddy bags.

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 01/02/2025 14:48

Nope, very happy!! Because I keep well away from slobbery dogs with their germ laden stinky breath.

"Germ ridden stinky breath."
I've never caught a zoonosis from any of my 6 dogs, 3 cats or any of the horses I've ridden. Other human beings, however, are one continuous source of potential colds and infections.

Tricho · 01/02/2025 19:10

TOO MANY PEOPLE DISPOSING OF DOG POO RESPONSIBLY WHATEVER NEXT OP COUNTRY HAS LITERALLY GONE TO THE DOGS

ACynicalDad · 01/02/2025 19:11

We need the councils to do their jobs

I haven’t said anything about people who don’t pick up after their dog. I asked what op proposed we do about the increase in the number of dogs.

Endofyear · 01/02/2025 19:51

Sadly yes there are too many dogs. The rescue centres are full of them, poor things. And we call ourselves a nation of dog lovers!

Whoknew24 · 01/02/2025 20:02

Yes yes and yes !! They are everywhere, we go for food and we’re stuck beside dogs. Go for a walk it’s hell, numerous dogs jump up on you with owners who think it’s funny,

The dog mess is everywhere, our local primary school has had to ban them at drop off and pick up times 🤦‍♀️

YeOldeGreyhound · 01/02/2025 20:39

No, we have too many people.

Overflowing poo bins is not the fault of dog owners. They have been responsible and tried to dispose of the poo properly. Where I live, people fly tip their house hold crap into and around all the park bins. That is definitely down to people, and not dogs.

CindereIIa · 01/02/2025 20:46

Yes. Way too many. And too many big, dangerous ones.
Too much shit, much of it not picked up. And I am sick of seeing little puddles of pee up the sides of fences, often right by my kids' schools.

I don't understand how as a nation we are ok with such filth. We don't accept people pissing in the street, or dumping turds wherever they feel like it, but it's seemingly fine for dogs to do it.

I am also sick of seeing dogs in shops and eateries.

If the dog poo bin is full, they should take the dog poo home.

If I let my baby pee and poo all over the place and just roughly picked up the poo but left the pee splashed all over the pavement/walls/bins etc. there would be outrage. Why is it ok for dogs to do it?

This. People cannot just poo and wee everywhere and half pick it up. Why should dogs? Dogs should wear nappies by law.

CindereIIa · 01/02/2025 20:51

CornishTickler · 01/02/2025 18:05

I can see the number of dogs in the UK decreasing rapidly over the next decade.

Realistically the Covid dog generation will pass through in the next 5-7 years.

Cost of dog ownership is rising exponentially. The number of Landlords now indirectly turning down tennents with pets and the decreasing availability of rental properties makes renting and pet ownership increasingly more challenging. In addition, as benefits are decreased in line with government spending and pensions going a lot less further people will have less money to spend.

Future generations will be more focused on finances and housing and possibly less focused on pets. Starker choices will need to be made with less disposable income.

I hope you are right. I despair for my children in this world overrun with dogs and dog shit and pissy lampposts. It was not like this when I was a child, and the planet was better for it.

I wish they'd bring in licensing and make it prohibitively expensive. It needs to pay for dog wardens and nightly street-cleaning, and a fund to help people who have been mauled by dogs too.

chattyness · 01/02/2025 20:52

No but there are too many shitty dog owners and far too much dog hate from non dog owners

JandamiHash · 01/02/2025 20:52

It’s not that there’s too many dogs. There’s too many stupid inconsiderate dog owners who should be trusted to look after a daffodil let alone a dog.

Ever wonder why so many of us hate dogs?

They are filthy. They smell. They are dangerous. They spread disease. They are noisy. Many are scary. They leave shit everywhere. They cause billions of other animals to die. They are bad for the environment.

DefyingGravidy · 01/02/2025 20:56

ZimbleFox · 01/02/2025 13:03

Growing up in the 80s there was far more dog mess around in my experience, despite there probably being less dogs overall.

Yes I agree. Far fewer dogs - none of my friends had dogs, only my country cousins and the little old ladies with little yappy things.

But I remember stepping in dog poo multiple times.

(Maybe I was super unobservant though)

YeOldeGreyhound · 01/02/2025 20:57

Nappies by law? I tried a nappy on my dog when she was poorly. It gave her a UTI.

People are not allowed to do their business everywhere because we are humans and should know better. It is also not allowed for you to be having your genitals out in public. We also have toilets. And human shit everywhere is a health hazard.
Dogs are animals and not confined to the same rules. They also do small pees as a way to scent mark places.

Cats are allowed free reign to shit in their neighbour's gardens. Maybe they are the ones that need nappies.

The same could be said of humans. Humans are the biggest threat to this planet.

Dogs bring a lot of comfort to their owners. If you don't like them, fine. But the constant whining about them just makes dog haters look ridiculous. Get worked up about something actually important.

@MuskIsACnt

You didn't really write that did you ?

BogRollBOGOF · 01/02/2025 21:02

Too many stupid/ unobservant dog owners with untrained dogs.

Too many people walking more dogs than they can control at a time on a walk. I suspect the ratio of dogs per owner has gone up in the past 10 years.

Too many people walking dogs while oblivious to them because they're concentrating on phone calls/ other media/ socialising.

Too many people not picking up after their dogs because they CBA or weren't paying attention.

Too many people who don't take their dog waste to a bin with appropriate capacity or home. If a bin is full, take it away.
Do not leave it overflowing, or hang from trees or hide in people's front gardens.

There are public bins about 75m away from my house in both directions. I have to be very careful when trimming the front hedges as they often have used shit bags dumped in them Envy
