Does the Uk Have to to many dogs?

I was out earlier. I was about to put some rubbish in the public bin but there I noticed it was filled to the brim with dog poo bags. I have noticed now days there seems to be dogs mess every where. It seems there are more dogs about since covid. I am curious if this can pose health risk for public.

Yes I think so. Where I live the pavements are covered in dog poo. New piles of it daily. (Also spit everywhere which is clearly not dogs but disgusting humans!) in summer our beautiful local park smells horrendous as the dog poo gets heated up and it’s overpowering 🤮

If I let my baby pee and poo all over the place and just roughly picked up the poo but left the pee splashed all over the pavement/walls/bins etc. there would be outrage. Why is it ok for dogs to do it?

Is your baby human?

In the summer when dogs aren't allowed on the beach dirty nappies are strewn all over the local beaches..human excrement everywhere, litter, needles etc..I guess we know the problem, humans..humanso own dogs. Scummy humans have children and dogs.

Scentedjasmin · 01/02/2025 13:27

Well obviously you don't remember the 80s and the plethora of white dog poo on every pavement.
I think the bigger problem is the amount of people we have in the UK to be fair. I'd happily have more dogs and less people.

Dappy777 · 01/02/2025 13:29

No, it has too many humans! The British population has trebled since 1945. If I could wave a magic wand and halve the number of humans but double the number of doggies I'd be much happier. Dogs don't cover the greenbelt in disgusting rabbit hutch houses. It wasn't dogs who hacked down my local woods so they could shove up a new build estate, and it isn't dogs who are ruining the centre of my village with another 500 rabbit hutch 'houses'. They don't drive round in noisy cars or choke up all the roads with traffic. They don't throw McDonalds bags out of car windows. And they don't cram millions of animals into pens and slaughterhouses.

Noeey · 01/02/2025 13:30

Far too many. Horrible things.

Davros · 01/02/2025 13:32

@caramac04 people should take their rubbish home with them if there's not enough bins. Certainly dog owners, who are going on a dog walk, should be prepared for this eventuality

Bristolinfeb · 01/02/2025 13:32

I don’t think there are too many dogs but there are certainly too many crap dog owners. People who previously wouldn’t have had a dog because they thought it was too much effort, money or not for their life style are getting them.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 01/02/2025 13:36

So quick google tells me there were more dogs owned in the UK in the late 80s than there are now.

It occurred to me when I was a child in the 80s, everyone had dogs, then the combination of more women working full time and increased awareness of the cruelty of leaving a dog alone all day meant that until covid, it had become far less frequent. Covid and more importantly, regular working from home has meant many more people can fit a dog into their lives.

But an overflowing bin is not a dog owner problem, they are picking up mess and doing the right thing, an overflowing bin is a council not emptying them frequently enough /not providing enough bins problem.

(no one picked up dog poo in the 80s, the polite thing to do was to train your dog to poo in the gutter not on the path. Said poo would just be left for next rainfall to deal with.)

Sunnybow94 · 01/02/2025 13:40

We live near a wood bordering farmers fields which I thought would be lovely for the kids growing up but it’s covered in dog shit and filled with untrained dogs, off the lead with no recall. The dogs often chase the deer through the woods and sheep in the fields too.
My ds (6) is now terrified of dogs as on more than one occasion he’s been jumped on and the owners haven’t been able to get their dog away.
I do wonder what the crap dog owners would think if I let my children torment wild animals, shit everywhere and scare their dogs, some how I don’t think they’d find that so acceptable.

Bananalanacake · 01/02/2025 13:45

I was born in the late 70s, when I was a kid only one person on my street had a dog, suburban street of semis in Yorkshire.

GutsyShark · 01/02/2025 13:46

Yes.

monsterfish · 01/02/2025 13:50

Covid saw an exponential rise in dog ownership and I’d bet that many of those who bought them wouldn’t have done so if not for the pandemic.

and the irony is this was possibly the worst time to venture into dog ownership. So now we have unsocialised dogs with clueless owners who now have gone back into the office. The state of overfull dog shelters themselves should clearly spell out there are too many dogs and too few good homes that can take care of them.

and yes the amount of dog poo and dog poo bags left on the ground is just unacceptable.

WeeOrcadian · 01/02/2025 14:03

My issue with dogs is breeders - there are far too many dogs in shelters that can't find homes. But people are quick to go and buy a dog from a breeder.

unsync · 01/02/2025 14:12

No, just feckless, irresponsible owners who don't train or pick up after their dogs.

adorablecat · 01/02/2025 14:32

Absolutely. Sometimes it seems everyone and his dog has got a fucking dog.

Rains masses in this country, so it will be washed away.

No it sits and stinks even in Scotland.

Whatevershallidowithmylife · 01/02/2025 14:36

I would say that there are considerably more dogs around now and I assume this is due to Covid. I’ve found they seem mostly to be cute crosses - lovely looking cuddly dogs but with very little brain power and owners generally the same. Any dog that isn’t a husky has no need for a harness, and NO dog needs a crate, just their own bed. Sorry, rant over ……

NormasArse · 01/02/2025 14:38

I imagine that dogs save the NHS a lot of money. They get people out walking; they provide emotional support; they give people a purpose.

Of course there are people who don’t care for their dogs properly, and don’t take them out… there are also people who neglect their kids too. The issue there is with those people, not their kids or animals.

I’m not exaggerating when I say that my animals have got me through the worst of times. Would you begrudge someone that support?

MrsJHernandez · 01/02/2025 14:38

It's not the dogs fault. Owners should pick up the poo and train their pooches.

MissyB1 · 01/02/2025 14:40

I would like less people and more dogs.

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 01/02/2025 14:42

Dogs are disgusting, smelly, slobbery creatures and I wouldn't have one anywhere near my home.

Everyone seems to have a dog since covid, but sadly there are so few responsible owners. Why can't these dog owners take the poop home and put it in their own bin rather than forcing it on the general public by using public bins? Makes the whole area smell bad, even if the bin is empty there is still an odour of poop especially in summer.

Dog owners really are some of the most selfish in communities. That everyone else should accommodate their stinky pets rather than them realise that many people don't want their dogs near them, or walking in their excrement and no it's not cute when they jump up, or bark and I don't believe any dog is "friendly", they may just have not bitten anyone.....yet.

Wow, you sound so joyless, must be miserable being you.

Dog owners should be responsible, but dogs bring pleasure and health benefits to their families, and we all have to live with lots of things we don’t like in society, for example for me it’s cats, unnecessary SUVs, badly behaved sprogs, noisy people etc, but I don’t rant they shouldn’t be allowed to exist. Maybe take a deep breath and have a chocolate biscuit.

Nope, very happy!! Because I keep well away from slobbery dogs with their germ laden stinky breath.

Enya321 · 01/02/2025 14:49

It’s the owners who are the problem and also cats
