Does the Uk Have to to many dogs?

I was out earlier. I was about to put some rubbish in the public bin but there I noticed it was filled to the brim with dog poo bags. I have noticed now days there seems to be dogs mess every where. It seems there are more dogs about since covid. I am curious if this can pose health risk for public.

Overflowing poo bins is not the fault of dog owners. yes it is. There is a bin near me which sometimes get overfull. dog poo bags on it and on the ground beside it. Obviously some dog owners use this as an excuse to not pick up after their dog. It is a 2 min job to request the council to empty from their website - no login required. But do any dog owners actually do this - no. I have had to several times. Bin emptied the next day.

Trouble is most dogs are in households which provide the bare minimum in exercise, training and mental stimulation. They are just bored, over excitable, and under exercised. Their needs are not met so they become a pest to everyone. Rather than deal with it owners just expect everyone else to put up with their shoddy dog ownership.

The same could be said of humans. Humans are the biggest threat to this planet.

Dogs bring a lot of comfort to their owners. If you don't like them, fine. But the constant whining about them just makes dog haters look ridiculous. Get worked up about something actually important.

Just what I was thinking.

Nappies by law? I tried a nappy on my dog when she was poorly. It gave her a UTI.

People are not allowed to do their business everywhere because we are humans and should know better. It is also not allowed for you to be having your genitals out in public. We also have toilets. And human shit everywhere is a health hazard.
Dogs are animals and not confined to the same rules. They also do small pees as a way to scent mark places.

Cats are allowed free reign to shit in their neighbour's gardens. Maybe they are the ones that need nappies.

Humans are also animals.

It should be illegal to permit dogs to piss and shit everywhere except your own garden. Absolutely disgusting. If we "know better" for ourselves, we should know better about dogs, and stop thinking it's ok to let them crap on our pavements.

That makes no sense. I put my dog's poo in the bin, and a day later it is overflowing. How is that my fault? That is down to the council, who should be emptying it regularly.
The trouble is here (and on most MN threads about dogs), is that all dog owners get tarred with the same brush. I hate seeing dog shit on the pavement too, and I also hate dogs jumping up on me, and off lead dogs approaching my scared little old lady.
But on MN, having a dog must mean I am "simple minded" ( was called that on a different thread) and am fine with dog poo everywhere, have a dog because I am rubbish with people, and thinks everyone else should love my dog.

You have a cat then 😂

spacepies · 01/02/2025 21:38

Dose the UK have to many dogs.
No we have far to many twats and knobhead owners.

Saz12 · 01/02/2025 21:58

Take your dogs shit home if the poop bin is full.
Keep your dog out of my (average sized) garden
Dont let it chase orher animals - be it ewes, squirrels, whatever.
Dont let it crap on farmland, swing parks, and sports fields.
Train it properly - decent recall, no jumping up, very limited barking.

Then dog, neighbours, and passers by will be happy.

Because you have used the bin. If you have a bin at home, and it is full, do you empty it or put rubbish on top of it? I suspect empty it (hopefully). If you need to use a dog poo bin which is overflowing don't just put bag on top of it, take it home. The council do empty it but sometimes it gets missed. Tell them and they will come empty it but for some reason this is not the job of the people who actually use the bin.

What is clear from MN threads is that there is a dog problem - lots of people are experiencing the same issues. Yes there are some good owners but the there are an increasingly growing number of bad ones who are full of excuses why you have been licked, jumped on, nipped, bitten etc by their manky mutt.

Ever wonder why so many of us hate dogs?

They are filthy. They smell. They are dangerous. They spread disease. They are noisy. Many are scary. They leave shit everywhere. They cause billions of other animals to die. They are bad for the environment.

They don't have to be any of those things and not all of them are, like I said too many shitty owners not taking proper care

I don't put my dog's poo in an overflowing bin. I take it home, or find another bin. Most general rubbish bins are also dog waste bins. But apparently an overflowing bin is my fault because my dog's shit is in the bottom of it.

Portakalkedi · 01/02/2025 22:24

Agree OP, it's all gone bonkers now, dogs everywhere, far too many, with stupid and irresponsible owners.

Lavenderflower · 01/02/2025 22:30

I would like to respond to those comment regarding the overflowing bin. It wasn't a dog bin - it was a normal public bin. I seen a bin overflowing with dog mess bags.

Most bins where I am are overflowing because the council don't empty them enough, and people are taking their household rubbish there. I know some councils (Bristol being one) is considering 4 week collections of wheelie bins now.

And most general public waste bins take dog poo anyway.

CeceliaImrie · 01/02/2025 23:04

Dogs everywhere where I live in south London.

Dog crap in the same places every day too.

I'd love to catch them leaving the scene like fugitives from justice.

StarDolphins · 01/02/2025 23:05

Not enough dogs imo. The more, the better. Dogs & children are about the only amazing & joyful things left.

StarDolphins · 01/02/2025 23:07

If the bins are full, it’s not upto me to take it home, it’s upto the LA to empty the bins. My council keep forgetting their duty to do this and so our local park is now rat infested.

100PercentFaithful · 01/02/2025 23:09

Yes it does. And they should be on a lead at all times if they don’t recall.

steff13 · 01/02/2025 23:12

Shinyandnew1 · 01/02/2025 12:58

Perhaps rather than fewer dogs, we need better waste collection procedures!

This is what I would think. It would never occur to me it was because of too many dogs. I would just think they had missed emptying it for some reason.

And just how do you propose to enforce this?? And what about cats in that case?
Wait, are wild animals also not allowed to take a shit?
Do they have to get ID cards and queue up at govt sponsored loos?

Yep, some people here just blame everything on dogs.

tillyandmilly · 01/02/2025 23:15

Lots of people shouldn’t have dogs - know a family who gave a cavapoo - lockdown dog - not socialised - never taken out for walks - lives next door to a park ! Makes my blood boil!

SaltyPig · 01/02/2025 23:18

If my dogs don't like you it's a definite red flag. Maybe more women should get dogs after reading the judgement of many OPs on MN.

jannier · 01/02/2025 23:25

So your moaning that the dog owners picked up the pooh rather than leave it on the ground.....why not wonder if dog owners are actually being more responsible nowadays and picking up more than they did 5 years ago?

jannier · 01/02/2025 23:27

MuskIsACnt · 01/02/2025 13:14

If I let my baby pee and poo all over the place and just roughly picked up the poo but left the pee splashed all over the pavement/walls/bins etc. there would be outrage. Why is it ok for dogs to do it?

Do you feel we should cull wild animals like birds, rats and foxes too? Are cats okay? What about spitting?

Theolittle · 01/02/2025 23:29

I love dogs and would love to have one when I retire. But I am concerned about the carbon footprint of the high numbers. Also find it ridiculous theres a huge industry so they are super groomed and pampered - seems an absolute waste of employment in a society where we can’t look after old and sick people properly!

Hate the culture of menacing looking dogs too. it was on the news about xl bullies costing a fortune for police to keep them. Just put them down fgs!
