To be really glad I don't live in America right now

AnonymousBleep · 31/01/2025 09:57

I really feel for ordinary Americans. It's bad enough on this side of the Channel, hearing daily about Trump's latest petty, spiteful, idiotic bullshit - that rant against the Bishop who asked him to have mercy on immigrants, the ridiculous and insulting attempt to blame 'diversity' for the plane crash - but living under it must be so much worse. And heaven help you if you're LGBT or a woman. Or an immigrant. Or not white. Or poor. Or anyone else Trump and his freakshow of a government despises. I moan about the UK all the time, like everyone else who lives here, because god knows it's far from perfect, but at least we don't have a government in charge who is trying to strip huge swathes of the population of their rights and citizenship.

He reinstated border control and I had no trust she’d do that. He even went so far as to rescind birthright citizenship, which he’d not even campaigned on.

I’m also pleased that he codified sex as male and female and has slashed DEI efforts federally. I’m also a ‘small government’ person so reducing the size and scope of the federal government is a welcome move.

Honestly, it’s been beyond my expectations. Gaza is perhaps the first misstep to me personally.

So you believe that people should stay in the countries they 'belong' to because of their ancestry but you also think it's fine for America to kick 2 million Palestinians out of the land they've lived in for thousands of years and make them stateless?

Hypocritical, no?

You cannot make asylum claims after illegally crossing the border anymore. That has cut down on the incentive to cross.

He made an executive order on birthright citizenship. It will go to SCOTUS ofc I’m hoping for a positive outcome (14th amendment was for slaves only—otherwise the 1924 Indian Citzenship Act would have been unnecessary)

I think it’s important to clarify bio men can never be considered as women.

I also think diversity for its own sake is not important. Only competence.

And he is paring down several government agencies and hopefully will shut down the Dept of Education.

Pretty much Gaza is the only head scratcher for me

  1. So he has not “reinstated border controls” he has merely closed one route for claiming asylum (the legality of which is currently being challenged in court.)

  2. So he has not rescinded birthright citizenship (which as you acknowledge is not a decision he has the power to make.)

  3. Why is it important to clarify this? How do you enforce this in the private sphere?

  4. Yes diversity for diversity sake is nonsense. What does that have to do with DEI?

  5. Why specifically do you think it is beneficial to shut down the dept of education and the other government agencies he is closing? What do you expect the benefit to the average american to be?

Two state solution is seemingly unacceptable to Israel. Especially after October 7. How would you ever get them to agree to it?

What does that have to do with being opposed to ethnic cleansing?

How do you expect to get the Palestinians to agree to being ethnically cleansed from their land? Why is one unrealistic and the other acceptable?

If Israel chooses not to come to the table after a terror attack that’s on then. The UK had IRA bombs in their streets and still sat at the table with Ireland.

Well presumably, since the US is a country of immigrants, the 14th Amendment applied to one of your ancestors? Or did your family spring up, bingo, from the very rocks of American soil?

If you paid attention to the border crisis (and no reason for you to do so, if you’re not American) then you’d know that asylum claims were the reason we had a huge number of illegal immigrants cross the border. Removing that option is a key strategy.

And producing an EO is an efficient way to rid ourselves of birthright citizenship.

Personally I think preventing men from
officially designating themselves as female is important. You may not care, fine. But that’s why I’m pleased with that EO

DEI departments/Dept of Education/USAID are all a massive waste of taxpayer money, need no further justification tbh

So hang on, you think Palestinians should be evicted from their land by the USA BUT you don't believe in foreign aid so don't think the USA is liable for any reparations to them for that?

What you'd expect of a Trump fanboy/girl I suppose.

The truth is the Palestinians lost the war, they are the weaker party and they have few supporters.

It is not like Ireland and the UK which had normal relations for quite some years before the GFA

No we didn't. There were IRA attacks in England until a few months before the GFA. Despite that a peace settlement was successfully negotiated.

I'm not sure it's accurate to say Palestine has few supporters. In terms of powerful governments, perhaps but in terms of people around the world, many are supportive of Palestine. It's not about taking sides, it's recognising injustice and being appalled by the actions taken against innocent Palestinians.
Other countries such as Spain and Ireland have chosen to recognise and support Palestine. The UK and US Governments have most definitely chosen to support Israel.

Israel has shown themselves for what they are. But moral condemnation from Europe/MENA won’t change them, they just dont care.

I don’t want America to administer Gaza to be clear. It would be better if Saudi or UAE could do it.

How is that going to work? Why would Saudi or the UAE want to 'administer Gaza' and why do you think they'd happily relocate 2 million fellow Muslims to - well, god knows where, you haven't said?

UAE and Saudi (and Qatar for that matter) already host a lot of displaced Palestinians.

But who knows. The usual diplomatic table has been flipped. Could be an opportunity to actually get something accomplished

Are you nuts? The condemnation from the international community has been unanimous and unequivocal. None of those countries want to be 'administering Gaza' or support anything other than a two-state solution. I don't know how you have the gall to suggest those countries should be taking in millions of refugees so that Trump can build a golf course and some 5 star hotels on the Gaza strip.

The only thing Trump has achieved is wrecking the ceasefire and risking the lives of the hostages.

This in spades.

The unbelievable smug nonchalance of these fools.

Basically. “ it’s foreign far away people, so they can be moved wherever. Who cares…..”

The arrogance and ignorance of these people beggars belief. No wonder they support the orange arsehole in chief . Cheering him on to terrorism and war. Utter twats

Again, condemnation is great. But how are you going to stop them, realistically?

You keep trying to present the only solution being the one in which everyone decides to let Israel/the USA flatten Gaza and make 2 million people homeless and stateless. Why not just nuke 'em, eh? That's also a 'solution' that would certainly be effective in ending the Gaza problem, but like the one you're fangirling for, would also create a million more, worse problems.

American exceptionalism is alive and well on this forum.

Honestly, I don’t care what you think

The last time the UK had the power to change anything in the MENA, they totally messed it up.

I don’t think Trump would do much better if I’m being honest.

But moralizing the situation has got
you nowhere. Is the EU willing to fight Israel to free Palestine?

(they have nukes and probably will be less hesitant to use them than Putin)

What is your alternative? Israel has not (and has probably never) accepted the two-state solution

So what’s the alternative here?

Israel will have to accept the two-state solution. Lots of Israelis do support it. It's just the right-wing government that, like Trump, is an oppressive imperialistic colonising force.

There's no need to start spreading lies just to try and make your weird point 🤦🏻‍♀️

Israel has accepted a two state solution many times, including at the time of Israel's creation.

If you need to lie to make a point, it's really not a point worth making.

Also for all those people who claimed Trump was against the USA involving itself in foreign wars….

Oh I wouldn't worry. This won't be a foreign war.

So bets on who launches on who as the opening gambit for WW3? Nukes as an entree or do we think we will start old school?
