To be really glad I don't live in America right now

I really feel for ordinary Americans. It's bad enough on this side of the Channel, hearing daily about Trump's latest petty, spiteful, idiotic bullshit - that rant against the Bishop who asked him to have mercy on immigrants, the ridiculous and insulting attempt to blame 'diversity' for the plane crash - but living under it must be so much worse. And heaven help you if you're LGBT or a woman. Or an immigrant. Or not white. Or poor. Or anyone else Trump and his freakshow of a government despises. I moan about the UK all the time, like everyone else who lives here, because god knows it's far from perfect, but at least we don't have a government in charge who is trying to strip huge swathes of the population of their rights and citizenship.

Trump got less than 50 of the total "popular" votes. He gain key "swing" states by a fraction. He got in because the electoral college voted him in, which was always going to happen if those swing states veered towards him.

It's not a landslide victory.

It's not really rising in the UK. Reform have taken votes from the Conservatives and split the right wing vote. That's how Labour won (and I say that as a Labour voter). They didn't take votes from Labour though. Britain remains a broadly centrist country, with louder (because richer) voices on the hard right.

I agree with you. The point I’m trying to make is that we have to take control of this now before it spreads. The only way it can be done is making things better for people and give them some hope

You do realise that Trump has just given women their rights back by defining women in law as a biological reality. He's saved women's sports by banning men including those who id as transwomen, same with prisons where 15% of women prisoners are male and he's banned state funded child medical transition including irreversible surgery. Please can you tell me how he's removed our bodily autonomy?

If you think your bodily autonomy comes from the fact people are trans then you don't understand what the term means

He is anti-abortion. He thinks that (men) have the right to tell a woman she must carry a baby full term. Must subject her body to all the stress and strain that entails. Must subject herself to the mental pain that can sometimes be the reason an abortion is required - rape, abusive partner.

That's far more damaging to women than trans people existing. And actually takes away their bodily autonomy

Honestly, there's no point in me responding to posts like this, but I'll give it a go. Trump is a serial sexual abuser of women - he despises them. He is not on women's side. He hasn't given you back rights - his government plans to strip women of their bodily autonomy, make it harder for them to work (by getting rid of the diversity programmes that directly benefit women), and push them back into traditional gender roles. He doesn't care about women in prisons or on sports teams, he just doesn't like trans people for the same reason he doesn't like gay people or immigrants - because they are 'other' and a threat to the hard-right white-male-led view of society. His team are already working to define life as beginning at conception and roll this out federally. Trump's administration wants women pregnant, barefoot and in the kitchen. If you can't see this, I can't help you.

Did you miss the bit where state by state abortions are being outlawed having a huge impact on women's reproductive healthcare rights? Women have literally died due to complications of unviable pregnancies where doctors were legally unable to intervene. This is not what anyone should want for women.

Your 1st point makes zero sense. Men being allowed to watch me undress in all changing facilities by law removes my bodily autonomy same with allowing men to strip search me (looking at you BTP) same with male drs and nurses who gain consent for treatment whilst lieing about their sex, I could go on for ages about all the ways that trans ideology removes women's bodily autonomy.
Could you please link to any EOs or laws that Trump has/is putting in to force women to carry a pregnancy to term.

LeafofLorien · 31/01/2025 10:34

Hard agree with pretty much everything you've said @AnonymousBleep you've articulated it much more eloquently than I can find the words for. I am finding it pretty unsettling watching it all unfold from the UK to be honest and so grateful not to be a woman in the States.

All I've seen on social media is Christians say that Trump is doing god's work and what a blessing it is that he's in power.

Americans knew exactly what Trump was like, he was banned from Twitter for spreading lies.
He initiated an insurrection, campaigned on drug cartels then pardoned a major drug trafficker.

He's brought in a load of misfits with no relevant experience to destroy democracy. Isn't he pushing for changes to the constitution on citizenship and having a third term?

He's got rid off government watch dogs and has deleted pages of evidence and reports from the Whitehouse website that contradict him.

He's talking about taking over various countries and is going to rescind healthcare for the poor. He's also reopening a terrorist facility and planning on placing thousands of people in detainment camps with no recourse to support.

I'm sure Americans are jumping for joy at their choice.

Batmanisaplaceinturkey · 31/01/2025 10:35

Yanbu OP. It's scary stuff. Now he's going after people with disabilities. And people are so gullible to believe blind people are allowed to be pilots because "DIVERSIDY ENNIT".

I don't like Trump but he's done some good unlike our government and he's doing what he said he would 😱 and has said that abortion laws should be state led

Part of the problem there (and here, to a slightly lesser extent) is the two party system though, and the political advertising thing is much bigger over there than it is over here. They also seem to be allowed to tell ridiculously blatant lies about their opponents. It's insanely polarised.

I do find it astonishing that any genuine Christian truly thinks Trump is one of their 'team'. But then again the whole 'Jesus lurves guns' thing is totally mental. And when I look at Trump, I see a man who's paid for a few abortions in his time, too.

100% agree with you @AnonymousBleep

I wouldn't live in America if you paid me! Shock So many reasons to not live there. Unless you're rich/wealthy/very solvent, how can anyone bear to live there? Only way to survive would be to be part of one of the huge religious organisations. 😬

No thank you, I will stay in my lovely country ta muchly (UK!) People can slate and bash and berate it as much as they like, but I will never live anywhere else!

Funnily enough, you do see some UK bashing on here, (from people who live in the UK,) but these people never leave do they? Funny that! Wink

I don't think we're so different. I'm still waiting for the 350m per week that the NHS is meant to be getting after Brexit.

AnonymousBleep · 31/01/2025 10:45

That's not bodily autonomy, that's privacy. Bodily autonomy is what YOU do with your own body, ie, carrying a baby, consenting to sex etc.

His executive order defines sex as beginning at conception, which means that life also begins at conception. Here's an anti-abortion organisation claiming it as a 'huge win' for them. www.ncregister.com/blog/laffin-trump-executive-order-20250122

And heaven help you if you're LGBT or a woman. Or an immigrant. Or not white. Or poor.

The USA has never been a good place to live if you are poor or not white.

Even as an immigrant it’s a great place to live if you are a wealthy, healthy, white Christian with a standard nuclear family.

Otherwise not so much.

Trump is obviously terrifying, but let’s not pretend that under the Democrats it was a great place for anyone who wasn’t a wealthy WASP.

CraftyNavySeal · 31/01/2025 10:49

I’m no Trump fan but he’s not trying to strip citizenship, he trying to end birthright citizenship AKA the exact same system we have in the UK.

The UK got rid of birth right citizenship in the 80s and Ireland got rid in 2005.

Nice try so I can refuse a strip search then 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Having a law that correctly states that sex is determined at conception does NOT mean life begins at conception nor does it say that so please try again

The Democrats have screwed up massively, for sure. It's a bit like Labour over here in the sense that they've largely lost the working class vote and are reliant on educated middle class voters and minorities for support. There's too much of an 'ivory towers' thing going on with them - they just seem out of touch with day to day life for most people.

America looks like a worse place to be poor than the UK, for the fact that healthcare is out of reach, if nothing else.

The strip search, if against your will, would be an abuse of your bodily autonomy. FORCING you to do something with your body that you don't want to do is removing your bodily autonomy.

You keep your head firmly in the sand if you like. It's only week one of the administration and Trump's already signalled his intent.
