To be really glad I don't live in America right now

AnonymousBleep · 31/01/2025 09:57

I really feel for ordinary Americans. It's bad enough on this side of the Channel, hearing daily about Trump's latest petty, spiteful, idiotic bullshit - that rant against the Bishop who asked him to have mercy on immigrants, the ridiculous and insulting attempt to blame 'diversity' for the plane crash - but living under it must be so much worse. And heaven help you if you're LGBT or a woman. Or an immigrant. Or not white. Or poor. Or anyone else Trump and his freakshow of a government despises. I moan about the UK all the time, like everyone else who lives here, because god knows it's far from perfect, but at least we don't have a government in charge who is trying to strip huge swathes of the population of their rights and citizenship.

You don't know fuck all about USAID. Said from someone who has a close relative who has spent 20 years in Africa saving children from dying. So fuck off down your conspiracy websites.

And you might want to actually read something about the California water systems.

You seem very uninformed tbh (since you're so fond of using that)

Does your friend get funding from the US taxpayer?

It is better for them to rely on private donations anyway, less risk of grift and corruption.

And looks like there are some aspects of USAID you don’t really get. Like using funds to support regime change in places like Venezuela. There’s a reason Western-funded NGOs aren’t allowed to operate in China. Don’t be naive about this.

How about policies that would help reduce the likelihood of natural disasters

We can’t control the weather and we aren’t going to power modern civilization with fucking windmills.

Building good infrastructure (with fossil fuels!) seems to be a better option to deal with climate change. I honestly have zero interest in ‘just stop oil’ and other crazy, civilization-destroying projects.

🙄So we’ll just carrying on hastening global warming. FYI fossil fuels do run out eventually!

RingoJuice · 04/02/2025 11:10

Maybe but we also keep getting better at extraction too.

tbh I do wish we could develop nuclear to replace fossil fuels for our electricity needs at least and wish the lefties could help us advocate for that, but they prefer to glue themselves to the road so we can ‘just stop oil’. LOL

KnobblyCheeseMix · 04/02/2025 11:15

@RingoJuice

Surely their military service should count for something? Especially if they have served in a war zone ?

MarsScarlet · 04/02/2025 11:20

@RingoJuice

Did you read anything into the background of the ATC scandal? It was bad tbh.*
*
Like, they threw out an applicant pool of 1000 people that had passed their skills-based assessment (the number one predictor of job performance) because it was too white.*
*
Like, that thought should not be in anyone’s head. At all.*
*
And this is the least of the scandal tbh as there were more dodgy aspects of the scandal.

Thanks, but that doesn't really answer my question "Can you tell me just how entry requirements for air traffic control specifically have been "dumbed down"?"

All that does is tell us it was bad again. I'd rather specifics. Skills-based assessments are not the only phase applicants go through. There are many cuts to an original pool. Your phrase "too white" is suspicious of a skewed source to me, so I'd love to see it for myself.

@AnonymousBleep its ALL circumstantial though isn’t it OP?? Surely you know that?

It is how it effects YOU and those around you is how you can view what is ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ and ‘acceptable’ in politics and not

You seem very caught up in your own little bubble and make it seem ever so simplistic .. so black and white , so ‘blase’..

Millions voted for Trump. It’s called Democracy. I’m sure though they’ll be ok with your ‘pity’ on them all.

The 'you're caught up in your own bubble/echo chamber' etc etc seems to be the standard response to posts criticing Trump. I'm not, nor are most of the people who are critical, because you don't have to be left-leaning politically or stuck in any kind of ideological bubble to be shocked that a convicted felon, sexual abuser and failed business man, a man who talks like a demented bigoted teenager and is a bloody weird colour, who has actively spoken about an unconstitutional third term in office and has an unelected deputy President in the form of the self-serving eugenicist Elon Musk, has managed to become President of the USA. It's like watching people trying to defend voting for Big Bird of Sesame Street. Big Bird would still have been a more understandable choice tbh.

Donations? FFS. You're just a moron.

My relative is a state department employee who could have made a small fortune as a private md, but chose to dedicate their life to saving children from dying of AIDS.

The coopting of USAID funds to Venezuela happened under, who was it? Oh right. Donald Trump in 2019.

Americans are in for a treat over the next four years.

It is not going to be only four years. Not the way this is clearly going.

Hard agree. Trump isn't going to walk away after 4 years. Unless he has to - it looks like he's getting dementia. At least, that's one charitable interpretation of his speech and behaviour.

perhaps she was thinking of Claudine Gay who absolutely WAS such a hire.

And perhaps Vance was a DEI entrant. I believe he would have got in without consideration for his deprived upbringing.

But that is the thing with DEI: you don’t know. So it is better to get rid of it altogether.

And Harris was definitely overpromoted because she is a black woman. You should note a lot of the beneficiaries of ‘DEI’ are NOT descendants of black slaves. Harris, for example, is not a descendant of black slaves yet she benefited enormously from policies originally meant for them.

It has now come to mean ‘not white’ and increasingly ‘not East Asian’.

This whole comment is batshit.

They can still do that, just not paid by the American taxpayer. You cannot expect this to be funded forever by taxpayers. Why don’t you think private donations will be forthcoming?

This exactly. So many women seem to believe Trump is on their side because he's anti-trans but there's so much more to women's right than this. Trump couldn't give a shit about women. They're sexual objects to him, nothing more. He even sees his own daughter in terms of sexual attractiveness "If she wasn't my daughter, I'd be dating her". Gross. If I was a woman in America now I wouldn't feel comfortable at all.

@AnonymousBleep I actually think that he will step away at 82, saying that he’s done wonderful things, greatest President ever, etc. etc.

Then Vance will run and that’s why we really need to focus on finding out why 72 million voted for Trump (despite his flaws), because Vance is a far greater challenge. Young, articulate, former Marine, pulled himself up from poverty, etc. He’ll be a very strong candidate.

Spending the next three years calling all Trump supporters racist scum- and then asking them to vote for you in 2028 isn’t going to work.

Because ultimately it benefits the US. Even Republican senators think it's bullshit

No, obviously not. But running against a campaign that's going to be characterised by bad actors, extreme lies, electoral manipulation, and probably attempts to put political rivals in prison, is going to be extremely difficult for the Democrats. I actually think it's unlikely the Republicans/Musk will even let them win another election. The whole 'election was stolen' nonsense (unbelievable though it clearly was to anyone not in the USA) worked for them and chances are they'll ramp it up to stop any possibility of electoral defeat going foward. We'll see.

@AnonymousBleep Well, Trump was being prosecuted during the campaign and he was elected! Legal action/threat of prison doesn’t seem to make much difference.

I agree that 2028 will be an uphill battle though.

TreacleTarcleSparkle · 04/02/2025 13:42

@AnonymousBleep you kind of lose your ‘argument’’ or your ‘point’ when you fire out very boring done to death cheap shots about Trump
Calling him a ‘teenager’ with ‘weird coloured skin’ and having early signs of dementia all in one sentence alone!

Did you have the same ‘concerns’ about Joe Biden? the one who called Zelensky .. he called him PUTIN !!! amongst hundreds of other gaffes … he honestly couldn’t even find his way off the stage after a speech that had been written for him .. he couldn’t walk up flight stairs without falling over .. but people HATED Trump so much they were more than happy to wheel out this poor elderly failing man for your own selfish agendas

And would it be ok to be so rude about Obamas skin colour? No of COURSE it wouldn’t. But it’s ok to tear apart Trumps skin colour and mock him and look down on him and personally attack him.

If you had to live in America and had to see it first hand then maybe you ‘GET’ why the people chose Trump.. in the meantime keep shining that halo and hope the pedestal is very comfy

Mate, the man is orange. He's done that to his own face (unlike Obama - a frankly unbelievable comparison but OK). Nobody in their right mind would go out looking like that - says it all.

I didn't have the same concerns about Joe Biden as I do about Trump, no. I am from the UK so looking at this from a global perspective and he's far FAR more dangerous than Biden was.

Depends if they stop at 'legal' action. All of Trump's chief appointments bar one have dodged the question of whether they'd break the law if he asked them to, meaning that yes, they definitely would. Buckle up USA, there's a wild ride ahead!

I appreciate this is a ‘loaded’ question and one you may not be able to answer but I’d be interested to hear your thoughts on this new act brought in pretty much straight away after his inauguration?

Can you respect or agree with ANY of the good that Trump does or do you just see him as this ‘racist orange faced loony’ as you so endearingly describe him

I'm slightly baffled why a law is needed to arrest and detain people who commit murders? Surely they're just in prison anyway? Although in the US you do have that weird thing where murderers are allowed out of prison on bail, so long as they can pay whatever the bail is - is that it? We don't have that in the UK so it's not something I'm familiar with.

What do you think about him promoting wife abusing Sean Parnell to assistant to secretary of defense? Is a wife beater (or in his case, a wife choker) the natural choice of a president who really cares about women's rights?
