To be really glad I don't live in America right now

I really feel for ordinary Americans. It's bad enough on this side of the Channel, hearing daily about Trump's latest petty, spiteful, idiotic bullshit - that rant against the Bishop who asked him to have mercy on immigrants, the ridiculous and insulting attempt to blame 'diversity' for the plane crash - but living under it must be so much worse. And heaven help you if you're LGBT or a woman. Or an immigrant. Or not white. Or poor. Or anyone else Trump and his freakshow of a government despises. I moan about the UK all the time, like everyone else who lives here, because god knows it's far from perfect, but at least we don't have a government in charge who is trying to strip huge swathes of the population of their rights and citizenship.

@MumoftwoGirls11, You’ve really got the wrong end of the stick. Whom do you think I voted for?

To get a different result in 2028, we have to face up to why millions of people voted for Trump, despite his obvious flaws. Attributing it to racism is far too simplistic imo and won’t lead to change.

Edited

Tone is hard to convey in this format. I am responding with cynicism/amusement to the pivot that DEI proponents are now making in its defence.

From "DEI helps minorities, it evens the playing field!"

To "Well it only helps white women anyway, so it's serves them right if they lose it".

Haven't been accused of misogyny before, that is definitely a new one. Misanthropy definitely, I don't discriminate.

Apologies, I meant to quote @beencaughttrollin there, it doesn't appear that edit post allows that to be changed.

And this patent bullshit is precisely why Harris lost, and the Dems will keep losing.

Bigotry of low expectations might be your thing, but many people think better of black people. They don’t think it’s obligatory to vote for someone or pretend they were anything but a dire candidate simply because of the colour of their skin.

No serious person could have watched Harris on the campaign trail and concluded she was qualified to be the most powerful person on earth. Not only were her nonsensical word salads legendary but she never even faced a primary - being anointed in a deeply weird way. Not forgetting she was one of the most unpopular VPs (and previous presidential candidates) in history.

And that’s putting aside what a traitor she was to her sex, being all in on gender ideology and worshipping Dylan Mulvaney among others.

The Dems need to un-crazy or they’re never going to win again. No more DEI to the point of lunacy. No more ‘birthing bodies’ and land acknowledgments and totally open borders. Diversity isn’t our strength. Unity is. What we share, not what divides us. Of course there’s no grift in that…

What nonsense. I didn’t say vote for the black woman. I said don’t vote for the rapist. You manage to miss my point entirely with so many words and extreme mental gymnastics again.

Musk closing down government departments, Trump bringing in laws that mean he can’t be prosecuted for anything he does during his presidency ever. He’s made himself immune for the laws he broke before too. Ignoring of environmental issues causing extreme weather for many Americans, a loon in charge of a health system that bankrupts those unlucky enough to get ill, gun ownership and the mass killings they caused ignored, disability protection being targeted….

It must feel like a dictatorship and Americans must be continuously looking over their shoulders and wondering am I next. Grim.

I am very, very pleased with the Trump presidency so far tbh and we are looking ahead towards the future for once.

I take it you’re not a minority group or a woman.

Must be great being in fear of fires and extreme flooding, having to fear food and goods prices about to go through the roof, having businesses worrying about prices and profits, having to pray you don’t get ill (as medical bankruptcy is always round the corner),your children having to practice hiding under tables at school in fear of their lives, always being scared you could get gunned down anywhere,a loon being given carte Blanche to access your data and the ability to close down government departments on a whim, increasing isolation on the world stage, a rich white man who doesn’t care about you (only other rich white men)playing with your country because he can, diversity protection being torn down, your constitution being ignored…..

sounds peachy.👌

72 million Americans voted for Trump out of the 245 million Americans eligible to vote in 2024. 29%
How Many People Didn’t Vote?
Close to 90 million.

That's depressing. What proportion of the population didn't vote when Obama came in?

RingoJuice · 04/02/2025 07:34

I take it you’re not a minority group or a woman

Well you’d be wrong. Plenty of women voted for this like me.

Must be great being in fear of fires and extreme flooding

I have always advocated for better infrastructure development to handle natural disasters. This would include building more dams in both North Carolina and California and telling environmental groups to fuck off when they speak about a fucking fish.

having to fear food and goods prices about to go through the roof

Since when did the left care about free trade? You guys used to hate it!

having to pray you don’t get ill (as medical bankruptcy is always round the corner)

I’d rather be in debt than receive substandard care (and die)

your children having to practice hiding under tables at school in fear of their lives, always being scared you could get gunned down anywhere

I’m not living in America at the moment and anyway I’m not a second amendment absolutist. I think sensible gun control is a good thing. I don’t fall lock-step in with GOP, I just think they are better overall.

the ability to close down government departments on a whim

USAID is a joke of an agency and it’s absurd waste of taxpayer money (at best) and also a front for more nefarious schemes I’ll not go into here

Also the Department of Education is worse than useless, should be shut down. It only began operating in the 80s and has overseen continual decline. The ‘no child left behind’ (a pet project of GWB) was a huge failure tbh

TankFlyBossW4lk · 04/02/2025 07:59

I have always felt that the US isn't ready for a woman president. As much as a person of colour. Afterall, they have had a POC.

RingoJuice · 04/02/2025 04:34

perhaps she was thinking of Claudine Gay who absolutely WAS such a hire.

And perhaps Vance was a DEI entrant. I believe he would have got in without consideration for his deprived upbringing.

But that is the thing with DEI: you don’t know. So it is better to get rid of it altogether.

And Harris was definitely overpromoted because she is a black woman. You should note a lot of the beneficiaries of ‘DEI’ are NOT descendants of black slaves. Harris, for example, is not a descendant of black slaves yet she benefited enormously from policies originally meant for them.

It has now come to mean ‘not white’ and increasingly ‘not East Asian’.

Every member of trump's cabinet is under qualified. Are they dei hires?
How do you know that vance would have qualified for Yale? Is it his white male face that leads you to believe this?
Dei was developed to open up opportunities for underrepresented groups, that's why women Asians, Hispanics, native Americans, the disabled, veterans and then black people are included in it.

She would have to be like Margaret Thatcher to get elected and you all would hate such a president

Donttellempike · 04/02/2025 08:04

Americans want to be screwed over by fascist billionaires who don’t care if they live or die?

Well they’re getting that now, good and hard

RingoJuice · 04/02/2025 08:05

Every member of trump's cabinet is under qualified

Cabinet positions are often handed out based on loyalty and ability to carry out the president’s agenda. You know this.

How do you know that vance would have qualified for Yale? Is it his white male face that leads you to believe this?

I don’t actually and THAT is the problem.

Dei was developed to open up opportunities for underrepresented groups, that's why women Asians, Hispanics, native Americans, the disabled, veterans and then black people are included

We would prefer a merit-based policy and stop caring about this. If you have a pipeline problem, the hiring stage is not the place to fix it

Mila6464 · 04/02/2025 08:25

It's a shame that trump's agenda doesn't include working for Americans rather than setting up a police state to serve himself.
Kash Patel, FBI leadership candidate, has a list of people he is planning to hound and prosecute because they do not agree with trump
Tulsi gabbard, head of intelligence, far too friendly with Putin and Assad, the former leader of Syria
Robert Kennedy jr. 14 year heroin taker. Doesn't approve of vaccines even though all his children are vaccinated.
Can't remember his name, the drinker, who is violent towards women with an 'updated swastika's tattoo on his chest. He wants to attack the confederacy.
Elon musk who apparently forced the head of the FAA out of position because he was fined for unsafe practices and who has also cut funding to childhood cancer research programmes. Elon musk thinks Americans are thick and under educated so the answer is to close the department of education.

Dei is a merit based system. You have to have the qualifications to submit an application for a job and not just rely on the fact that you are a friend or a relative of someone already on the job.

Americans are in for a treat over the next four years.

Sky high prices are sky high prices, must be great being so rich it doesn’t matter to you. However back to the op,most are not able to not worry about food and energy prices alongside job security so yep another tick for being glad I’m not in the US right now.

Glad you can afford illness debt and the care you think is so superior many can’t and nobody is immune or able to dictate themselves or their family out of expensive illness lingering just round the corner . Our NHS may be creaky and in need of an overhaul however it still deliveries co ordinated treatment to every person in this country every day free of charge, the vast majority of which is superb. We have a free independent patient liaison system when it isn’t. Not being fleeced for medication, insurance and treatment( you are changed multiple times above what we pay for everything), knowing we don’t need to have the means to pay for every over inflated need is huge. You may need to wait at A&E at times however at least you don’t need to get out your credit card to get there or through the door. The NHS has been amazing to my family even when tired and I’m forever grateful that we are fortunate enough to have it.

So kids can just die. Great, glad you can sleep at night knowing your kids will be sitting ducks the next day in school. You’re happy to have the biggest opponent to gun safety who will never go against the NRA because his voters won’t like it because he is apparently “better” overall. Back to the op- I wouldn’t be.

There are more sane ways to improve government departments than just shutting them down.

Fairly sure everything about LGBT changes - are about the T - LGB people are being protected.

TQI+ does NOT belong with LGB

LastTrainsEast · 03/02/2025 22:33

President Trump has just in the last day used tariffs to motivate Colombia, Venezuela, Mexico and Canada to cooperate over immigrants, drugs and other matters.

So you see it is not random, but a strategy that is working perfectly.

He hasn't actually had to impose any tariffs on them as the possibility was enough. A non violent way to achieve a safer America.

I suppose it could be seen as evil if you believe countries have a right to push drugs and people over the border into another.

I don't know what was said to Stanmer, but if Trump were to make a few suggestions I'm sure Starmer would oblige and we could use the help.

So naive. The things Mexico and Canada have 'announced' were already planned before the threat of tariffs. Man child DT is just taking credit when in reality he is backtracking.

We can’t control the weather and we aren’t going to power modern civilization with fucking windmills.

Building good infrastructure (with fossil fuels!) seems to be a better option to deal with climate change. I honestly have zero interest in ‘just stop oil’ and other crazy, civilization-destroying projects.

MoodySky · 04/02/2025 09:09

"but at least we don't have a government in charge who is trying to strip huge swathes of the population of their rights and citizenship". Yet.

KnobblyCheeseMix · 04/02/2025 09:23

I think Trump should get rid of the criminal element and tighten up border security but some illegals overstayed , kept in touch with ICE and actually went on to start up successful businesses , bought property and raised families who are American Citizens by dint of birth on American soil or "Anchor babies ". These kids have gone on to be model American Citizens and have gone on to serve in the military and gone to college. I remember watching a documentary on illegal migrants and could believe they deported such people who have been an asset to America.

Some kids have no idea they came to the USA illegally as babies and toddlers and have been kicked out despite growing up as Americans, even serving in the military.

I think some common sense should be applied . If illegals have lived in the USA for years , contributed to society , paid their way and have been kept out of trouble then why kick them out ?

Most certainly get rid of the criminals and troublemakers.

You don't know fuck all about USAID. Said from someone who has a close relative who has spent 20 years in Africa saving children from dying. So fuck off down your conspiracy websites.

And you might want to actually read something about the California water systems.

@AnonymousBleep its ALL circumstantial though isn’t it OP?? Surely you know that?

It is how it effects YOU and those around you is how you can view what is ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ and ‘acceptable’ in politics and not

You seem very caught up in your own little bubble and make it seem ever so simplistic .. so black and white , so ‘blase’..

Millions voted for Trump. It’s called Democracy. I’m sure though they’ll be ok with your ‘pity’ on them all.

"Didn't Cry For Our Daughters": White House vs Selena Gomez Over Immigrants

In a now-deleted Instagram video, Selena Gomez, whose father is Mexican, described the arrests of illegal immigrants as an attack on "all my people".

Honestly … tolerating this could lead to more people attempting the same. Their parents knew the risks, they should not blame America for enforcement but their parents for taking those risks.

I think some common sense should be applied . If illegals have lived in the USA for years , contributed to society , paid their way and have been kept out of trouble then why kick them out

Because we have an immigration system. They didn’t go through it.

StandFirm · 04/02/2025 10:32

Replies like PP's above confuse two separate issues:

  1. Despicable criminals who rape and murder must be punished and if illegal/undocumented they should be deported.
  2. They are despicable because of what they do not what they are. It is wrong to assume that undocumented = criminals. There will however be criminals who get through the border and the process to monitor who comes in needs to improve in order to vet them.
Seeing the news about Rubio's deal with El Salvador sent chills down my spine: the part saying that US citizens and legal residents could end up being deported out there. What that means is that El Salvador is offering to host concentration camps for Trump's undesirables. Of course, posters will come along to say I'm wildly exaggerating...
