Wedding dress. AIBU to feel a little upset?

Brightskiesandcoffee · 29/01/2025 08:10

I was waiting for my wedding dress delivery but as it was scheduled roughly same time as my GP appointment I called my Sis who lives 10 minutes away to take my niece (3) and come chill with me and receive the delivery if I’m not in exactly that time.
She happily agreed and Sod’s Law it came exactly when I was out. I received the message and despite the fact that I’m feeling horrible due to suspected chest and ear infections it just made my day knowing it’s here.
Went home, opened the door and my parcel was on the sofa, taken out of the plastic wrapping, there was supposed to be a nice little white bow on one of the corners which was missing. Sis apologised and said that her DD wanted to see “the princess dress” so she promised her “ just a quick little peek”. When I opened the lid the little card that was supposed to be there on the top was also missing and the tissue paper was a bit crumpled and broken. Again, she explained and she’s so sorry but my niece was just so fast, grabbed the card from the top and disturbed the paper. Both the white bow and little card I found on the kitchen floor. Obviously I’m not mad at my niece but AIBU to feel upset that I feel like I lost little bit of that magic? I thought I’m gonna do maybe a little unboxing video just for myself and have that first feeling of opening your wedding dress, delicate and beautiful and now it doesn’t feel the same anymore.
The dress is not dirty or damaged but I’m just upset that I got no bow and no card but crumpled and broken tissue paper… it was completely opposite what I had in my mind for this special moment, well at least for me?

I would not give a shit about any of this 🤷

strawberrycrumbles · 29/01/2025 12:40

I wouldn't worry too much about the bitter and disgruntled MN posters. So many are against birthdays, wedding parties, anything fun. I am guessing money is tight and they are missing out on a lot of things.

A wedding dress is usually the most expensive dress you'll ever buy in your life.

Someone wants to make it a bit more special, bloody hell, what's the harm? It doesn't mean they won't have a happy marriage. I had a ridiculously expensive wedding, and I am still happily married 😂. I guess it's painful for some people.

What kind of miserable life do you have if you come on here to mock and insult someone who is doing no harm to anyone.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 29/01/2025 12:41

@Brightskiesandcoffee - your sister needs to learn to say No to her dd!

"Can we look at the princess dress, mummy?"

"No, love - but maybe Auntie Brightskies will show it to you later. It's not our parcel, so we can't unwrap it. You wouldn't like it if Auntie Brightskies unwrapped your birthday presents, would you?"

SharpOpalNewt · 29/01/2025 12:42

They shouldn't have opened any parcel but especially not a wedding dress, and especially not with a three year old present.

diddl · 29/01/2025 12:45

Why are posters being so nasty about wanting to video opening the box?

Even if she didn't want to do that it was still no longer nicely packaged for her to open.

FindusMakesPancakes · 29/01/2025 12:45

Don't any of you people who are criticising OP here remember how special your wedding dresses made you feel? How, at that time, the wedding planning was so exciting and important? Sure, most people later on laugh at themselves and how they went a bit OTT on some things. Same as some people go a bit OTT with their PFB or whatever their priority is at the moment.

This was something that was important to her right now, however inconsequential it might be in the grand scheme of life.

If you have a mental image of what you wanted and someone intervenes and stops it, it stings.

Exactly! It should not have been difficult.

Poor you. Of course it's special to you. But you have lots more to look forward to. Your sister is an idiot letting her child open something that is not hers. Don't trust her with anything else to do with the wedding as I have a feeling she is jealous and will try and ruin things for you.

Could be worse, my daughter lives on a busy street and hers was delivered a day early on the doorstep whilst she was away. She frantically drove the 4 hours home to find it gone. Next day it turns out someone up the street took it in for her but a very upsetting time for her! (and by extension us).

Not just weddings - don't those people have anything in their lives which is special to them and which they'd feel annoyed about if someone else took the shine off it?

I genuinely don't know how some people function. I think they must have replaced empathy with the dopamine hit that they get from kicking the OP.

thinktwice36 · 29/01/2025 08:12

Couldn’t get upset about a bow - what I would be upset about is someone else opening my post!

This really not on - parent needed to say no

They probably do have special things but think they are far superior to other people

SheridansPortSalut · 29/01/2025 13:04

You have a hard road ahead of you in life if you're going to let things like this upset you.

Topsyturvy78 · 29/01/2025 13:06

I would never open someone else's parcel.

ClairDeLaLune · 29/01/2025 13:13

That’s awful that your sister opened your parcel. You should be the one to do that, not someone else, I’d be really unhappy about that. Your sister needs to learn how to say no to her daughter, she’s creating an entitled little monster.

So is the child if her mother doesn’t tell her no

Devilsmommy · 29/01/2025 13:24

Who the hell opens a wedding dress parcel that isn't even theirs and with a 3 year old in the vicinity? I mean, is she jealous about your wedding and would be happy to ruin it slightly 🤨

UrsulasHerbBag · 29/01/2025 13:26

She should have said no. That is all there is to it.

Things like having her privacy invaded by some rude oaf allowing a child to open and paw through an important, once inna lifetime delivery?

ZenNudist · 29/01/2025 13:31

ThejoyofNC · 29/01/2025 08:15

I'd be really pissed off that she opened it.

Couldn't get worked up about a bow and some tissue paper. "Unboxing" videos are stupid.

This
YANBU that she shouldn't have opened it.

YABU and a bit OTT to get worked up about special moments bows and tissue paper.

You are quite in your right to feel upset about this, however you can’t do much to change the situation can you - your sister apologised - it would be unreasonable to expect further apology or recompense. Hopefully your sister learns from her mistake. Wishing you all the best with your upcoming wedding - I promise there will be hundreds more opportunities for recording special moments so try not to be so upset.

strawberrycrumbles · 29/01/2025 13:53

I'd be pissed off if someone was opening my dry cleaning, and I have no feeling whatsoever towards my work clothes.

The OP gave details to explain why this specific box was even more special, it's a pity posters need to attack her on that.

houwseevryweekend · 29/01/2025 14:00

I'd be fuming too. Anyone who has ever bought an expensive item, will know that the beautiful packaging is a part of the experience because it's special. That's why we wrap gifts in wrapping paper and not tin foil! Life is about the little pleasures, and nice wrapping and packaging is one of them. I used to work in a packaging company and the amount of effort we took for it to be user friendly and aesthetically pleasing - because it's a part of the product and experience.

I would tell your sister off, but then I'm not one to repress my anger. Who opens someone else's parcel, especially when she knows it's your wedding dress. I hate when people think their kid's needs trump everything else, and just because you're family, your property is their property, So sorry this happened to you.

I can't think of a way to make it better for you but from now on I wouldn't share anything with your sister about the wedding, or any special moment. Maybe treat yourself to a manicure, a glass of bubbles while you try the dress out?

houwseevryweekend · 29/01/2025 14:01

Also I think it's wonderful you get pleasure from little things like packaging - that's how life is meant to be enjoyed and makes you a nicer person for it.

cookingthebooks · 29/01/2025 16:28

Dear Lord who the hell opens someone else’s wedding dress!?!?!! I have siblings and we are super close but … I would NEVER!

Chilesstanton · 29/01/2025 12:38

Are you 3 OP, or was it your niece that’s 3?

It's impressive to be the unreasonable one on someone else's AIBU. Sheer, petty nastiness.
