GMB reporting on liberation of Auschwitz (minus the Jews!)

I couldn’t see another thread on this but if there is, let me know.

AIBU to be absolutely outraged about the report on the liberation of Auschwitz of GMB without one mention of the fact they were Jewish people who were killed?

What the hell is going on in this country where we can’t even speak of the victims of the greatest atrocity ever taken place in this world?

Jews they were Jews.

Disgraceful, I wonder if there will be a grovelling apology tomorrow.

SabreIsMyFave · 27/01/2025 22:36

100% agree this is fucking outrageous.

But ya know what, I am not surprised this is happening. The persecution of Jews is just never ending isn't it? 🙄

It's really upsetting. 😢

Yes, these people were JEWS. 6 million JEWS died. 😢

cakeorwine · 27/01/2025 22:36

"6 million people were killed in concentration camps in the second world war as well as millions of others because they were Polish, disabled, gay or belonged to another ethnic group"

It doesn't make sense.

The word Jewish should be in front of the word "people".

So either the word Jewish was missed out, replaced or the presenter didn't say the word.

Who liberated Auschwitz? The people not invited to the ceremony today that's who.

It is so utterly disgraceful that history is being completely rewritten and the people involved erased from the story.

The red army did. There were reps from constituent countries there

Also, no mention whatsoever of Romani of course. I guess they were dumped into the "other ethnic minorities".....🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄

Genuine error my foot. The content fed into the autocue is vetted like mad and professionals don’t just skip a word.

There is a real agenda in media circles to erase the word ‘Jew’ and it’s disturbing

The BBC have definitely covered Auschwitz today and the Holocaust, telling the stories of the Jewish people who were taken there.

1234567890qwerty · 27/01/2025 22:43

All the coverage I've seen/heard has mentioned Jews almost exclusively.

I thought that they are the ones who should be there the most. Not because if what they did then. But to remind them about what can happen when you stop respecting people.

JandamiHash · 27/01/2025 22:26

Meanwhile a survey released today shows 58% of Jewish people hide their Jewishness to avoid anti-semitism - it seems ITV want them to hide it too

This makes me so angry, what has this country become? 😡🤬😡

I'm sure I heard them say that most were Jews.

Vitamindes · 27/01/2025 22:56

BBC definitely repeatedly referred to 6 million Jewish people 😓

As the granddaughter of a Latvian Jew whose family fled the Russian Empire for Germany due to persecution in the early 20th century I can see why they weren't invited. Or is the re-writing of that antisemitic history ok?

hairalert · 27/01/2025 23:00

Your username is extremely apt op I agree.

I'm not voting as I won't click on a 'x' link. I would guess that is why some people have voted you unreasonable, as I do think it's unreasonable to post an 'x' link, but that's not the question.

zzplex · 27/01/2025 23:19

But "6 million Jewish people were killed in concentration camps in the second world war" isn't factually correct, is it?

6 million is the total number of Jewish people who died as a result of Nazi actions or who were directly killed by them. Or am I misreading the statistics?

Saying they all died in concentration camps is a gross oversimplification. It doesn't acknowledge that deaths also occurred in ghettos, mobile gas units, shootings in mass graves etc.

MrsSkylerWhite · 27/01/2025 23:26

I don’t know what GMB news is but I’m something of a dinosaur.

I don’t have a religious faith but knowing what today means to so many I have spent this evening watching documentaries.

I am still catching my breath.

OneLemonDog · 27/01/2025 23:26

It does seem like an error, as it doesn't make sense.

HaveYouActuallyDoneAnyWashingThisWeekMum · 27/01/2025 23:27

I’m really appalled by this too.

Channel 4 news tonight had an extended feature on the commemoration. They also have a very very sobering documentary with extensive original footage from 1945 called Night will Fall. It was originally shown in 2015. Only watch if you’re feeling strong because the images are very graphic and extremely upsetting.

zzplex · 27/01/2025 23:30

I don’t know what GMB news is but I’m something of a dinosaur.

It's Good Morning Britain, aka the breakfast television programme on ITV.

MrsSkylerWhite · 27/01/2025 23:32

Ah, thank you zzplex. I’m a radio person.

Ravensperch · 27/01/2025 23:38

This has to be a new low. I’m not a fan of the Royals but they have done Jewish people proud today. I wonder if this report would have been as completely in denial if Israel and Gaza weren’t at war? I mean it shouldn’t matter but that’s all I can think of to totally erase all mention of the 6 million Jews who were slaughtered. Of course everyone who was killed there must be mentioned - homosexuals, Gypsies, disabled and others. This is so shocking

NeverDropYourMooncup · 27/01/2025 23:38

I think that when over eighteen thousand Jews were murdered in nine hours in just one camp, any 'but they didn't all die there, did they?', carries a risk of implying it 'wasn't as bad as all that'.

ARealitycheck · 27/01/2025 23:43

OP, you are aware that while the majority of those held and killed there were jewish, There were a number of other religions and ethnicities suffered the same fate. I'd suggest the reporter was correct in saying 'people', so as not to offend one group by leaving them out.
