GMB reporting on liberation of Auschwitz (minus the Jews!)

I couldn’t see another thread on this but if there is, let me know.

AIBU to be absolutely outraged about the report on the liberation of Auschwitz of GMB without one mention of the fact they were Jewish people who were killed?

https://x.com/antisemitism/status/1883921202416345358

What the hell is going on in this country where we can’t even speak of the victims of the greatest atrocity ever taken place in this world?

Jews they were Jews.

So you want these protests to be banned? What format of protest is acceptable to you for those concerned at the numbers of deaths and displacements in Gaza?

Edit: Ignore me. Solely because I want this thread to get back to topic.

Edited

When a protest is hostile towards a group of people (Jews), to the extent that they feel unable to leave their homes every Saturday, due to verbal abuse and antisemitic chants and banners then it’s time to halt them. The protests serve no purpose. The UK are not going to change their stance because a very minuscule percentage of our population chooses to parade our streets. The pro Palestinian supporters have made their point. They want to turn the West against Israel and interfere in the Israeli governments attempts to eradicate a terrorist group and rescue their people. It’s never going to happen. Even the Labour Party (who have had problems with antisemitism in their party) are backing Israel. If people really want to help, then donate aid to the many organisations helping Palestine. The protests are not helping Palestine at all, and are just there to intimidate.

@Comedycook no, I mean that Israel has been attacking and displacing Palestinians one way or another for many, many years now. The hamas attack (which obviously shouldn’t have happened) just gave them a convenient excuse to be more openly aggressive.

But like I said earlier on, if you think the response has been appropriate and proportional… I don’t know what to say.

When people declare war, they attempt to do what they have to achieve their war aims. Hamas doesn't cae one bit about its people, in fact they crave martyrs. They create martyrs.

This is a thread about the Holocaust.

It was. But there are other posters bringing up Palestine. So.

Yes, a concentration camp with luxury car showrooms, four star hotels, grand villas, swimming pools, shopping malls and a nice lifestyle ( before October 7th)

Can you even hear yourself? Have you been to Aushwitz? Have you been to Israel? Have you been to Gaza?

in fact Hamas also terrorises its own people; shoots and executes them; steals the food aid.

The ceasefire would have happened within days of 7th October had the terrorists released the Israeli hostages. All the Palestinian deaths are down to one group of people. Not Israel, but Hamas. They clearly didn’t care about the people they claim to represent, as rather than free 251 hostages, they allowed 45,000 of their own people to die. And for what? They’re now releasing them. All a pointless exercise as they’ve gained nothing.

NewForestNewYear · 28/01/2025 20:36

Yesterday was a day for the world to remember the atrocities of the Holocaust and the dangers of anti-Semitism. It is shameful that GMB failed in its duty to report properly on this, by omitting to inform people that Nazi Germany’s fevered objective was the absolute annihilation of Jewish people. It is telling that many of the concentration camps were situated just outside towns or cities where normal life continued (watch Zone of Interest). HMD should never be hijacked by others or its importance diminished in any way for cheap political point scoring. Our collective understanding of the meaning of the word Holocaust must also never be diminished.

The irony....seems like you're the one falling for propaganda.

And you clearly know nothing about history.

The term antisemitism predates the foundation of Israel.

Although I don't know why I'm bothering. After you kept saying that Israel shouldn't exist and compared a poster to Himmler for saying it does you're clearly too blinded by hatred to listen to any kind of reason.

I mean coming on a thread about the Holocaust to claim antisemitism is not on the rise. What is wrong with you?

Humdingerydoo · 28/01/2025 20:46

I see we've hit the "arabs are Semites too you know?" part of the evening. A true classic.

Not sure why it's so difficult for some people to just agree that missing out the word "Jewish" in a segment about the Holocaust on Holocaust Memorial Day is either pretty fucking stupid or pretty fucking sinister.

MrsSkylerWhite · 28/01/2025 20:47

Please read again what you just posted. (It would have been respectful to take the trouble to spell Auschwitz and then Auschwitz-Birkenau, correctly, btw)

I am an atheist. I have never been to Israel or to Gaza. I have never been to Auschwitz. Do I believe what I see on my television screen about the horrors of the Holocaust? Yes, I absolutely do and I cry for those lost and for the survivors who were forever haunted. What was inflicted on Jewish people, disabled people, gay people, people with SEN, other ethnic minorities such as the ancient Roma people, even twins just because they were twins was in my view the lowest point in human history.

Do I believe what I see on my television screen of the hell on earth that Gaza has been reduced to ? Yes, I absolutely do.

To suggest that people in Gaza are living the kind of life that your post suggests is shameful.

Mass murder is despicable and inhuman. Full stop.

How and why do you think that right wing nationalism has arisen in Israel? Israel was founded on broadly socialist principles.

How many times have the Palestinian leadership turned down settlements and two state solutions over the decades? How many intifadas and campaigns of terrorism can any nation tolerate?

You do realise that words have meaning. War is not the exact same thing as genocide. Have you witnessed Israel transporting muslim arabs from around the Middle East into Gaza in cattle trucks - to especially designed gas chambers?

Israel is a modern, democratic country and all citizens have equal rights - and that includeds the 20% of the population that is Arab - Muslim. Everyone has the vote, can sit in the Knesset, and take up any role or profession in society.

Until Hamas and other extremist organisations cease with their jihadi campaign, israel will do what it has to do to secure its borders and defend its citizens. War aims are standard in any conflict but war in and of itself is not genocide.

If genocide is your main concern i take it you have a lot to say about what is going on in Sudan at present, or what has been going on in Northern syria, or any number of other places in the world?

Or maybe you are just on a bandwagon, and when that wagon departs so will you.

Edited

I don’t know why you’re acting like I said it’s the same. I only said the only reason Israel doesn’t wipe out all Palestinians is because they can’t. Given the opportunity, they would. As they’ve been showing 🤷🏻‍♀️

Two wrongs don’t make a right and I’m not on any bandwagon. There’s been plenty of documentation across the years about what goes on in there. Furthermore, criticising the government of Israel isn’t antisemitism no matter how much people try to conflate it. It’s not true that all citizens have the same rights in Israel - hell, take a look at the treatment of Ethiopian Jews.

The fact is none of this would be happening if they hadn’t created Israel in a land where there were people already living. That’s the root of the problem and always will be.

The fact that Sudan, Syria, Mozambique etc have ongoing severe problems doesn’t take away from the horrifying reality of what’s going on in Gaza.

cakeorwine · 28/01/2025 20:57

The sentence doesn't make sense:

The ITV breakfast programme faced widespread outrage after presenter Ranvir Singh, introducing a segment on King Charles paying tribute at Auschwitz, said: “Six million people were killed in concentration camps during the Second World War, as well as millions of others because they were Polish, disabled, gay, or belonged to another ethnic group.

So it says:

6 million people were killed in concentration camps
As well as millions of others

So are the others "not people"? They are "others"

All the atrocities I’ve listed are happening in Gaza? They’re being gassed, experimented on, starved? Where have you got that information from? And the propaganda being peddled is alive and kicking amongst pro Palestinian supporters. Where people believe that the Israelis allowed their people to be kidnapped on October 7th, and in fact did it themselves (🙄), deny Hamas are terrorists, lauding them as freedom fighters. I mean, come on….

Aftergloww · 28/01/2025 20:58

@cakeorwine it was really poorly worded, probably by some random underpaid intern.

As I suggested above visitors to Auschwitz and other concentration camps can verify that there is simply no comparison. Nowhere in Gaza will you see huge piles of human hair scalped from the inmates heads, piles of discarded shoes including those of children, other personal items if prisoners as well as items if torture used against them. The tiny spaces they were given to live in if not sent to the gas chambers upon arrival etc etc. Gaza is a war zone not a concentration camp.

StrikeForever · 28/01/2025 00:12

Because the victims were not all Jews. What happened to them at the hands of the Nazi was awful, but the same was done to the Disabled, people who opposed the Nazi regimen, Roma People, Poles, Serbs, Jehovahs Witnesses, Freemasons, Homosexuals and several other groups. In most reports on the Holocaust, only Jews are mentioned.

Missing the point of op's thread.

hairalert · 28/01/2025 21:02

Wow some of you should be ashamed in this thread. Get off the internet.

Anti semitism is most certainly on the rise in the UK. Even Al-Jazeera reported the figures as recently as October 2024 more than 5500 antisemitic incidents in one year, the highest ever yearly tally.
It seems you are the one believing 'propaganda'.
