To think this isn't a funny joke and be disappointed in DD

DD1 (24) and DD2 (22) were sitting on the sofa together and DD1 showed DD2 her phone and they both burst out laughing. I asked why they were laughing and DD1 said just a message she had sent a guy she was talking to. They were talking about some celebrity and he said she was a 10/10 which led to this

DD - what am I then
Guy - 11
DD - You're a 9
DD - And together we are a fucking disaster
Guy - That might be the sexiest thing I've ever heard, well done
DD - Thank you

AIBU to think it wasn't a funny joking and this guys reaction was weird or is this just what young people are like now?

It’s obviously just a joke you didn’t get, which is fine as you aren’t involved in the conversation. Why are you bothered?

Needmorelego · 27/01/2025 21:35

I don't even understand what they meant?

jbirdy · 27/01/2025 21:36

Needmorelego · 27/01/2025 21:35

I don't even understand what they meant?

She was saying he's a 9 and she's an 11 - so 9/11 ... a disaster.

Say what now??

None of that makes any sense!

YoungGunsHavingSomeFunCrazyLadiesKeepEmOnTheRun · 27/01/2025 21:37

It didn't happen in their lifetime. Where we remember exactly what it was like, they have just read about it.

I don't really find it funny, but it's 2 youngsters making a joke about a historical event. Hardly uncommon.

comedycentral · 27/01/2025 21:37

I don't understand what they meant, are you sure they mean 9/11 the terrorist attack or are they just saying weird texty nonsense?

Needmorelego · 27/01/2025 21:38

@jbirdy that is a weird joke (if that's what it meant).

I asked DD to clarify and she said she was referring to 9/11

Maybe in poor taste (if that’s what they were alluding to) , but in all honesty I wouldn’t give it a second thought. They were flirting and connecting and all that stuff. Not the stuff of losing sleep over.

Alalalala · 27/01/2025 21:39

Bloody hell, leave them alone.

Smithhy · 27/01/2025 21:40

Well 9 & 11 does resonate with a disaster.

Might not be to your taste, but it’s a joke.

MummytoE · 27/01/2025 21:40

Lighten up

Agree

Some battles are not even worth thinking about

What i would say at 22/24 is different to 45.

StarDolphins · 27/01/2025 21:40

Never in a million years could I get offended at this!

MissUltraViolet · 27/01/2025 21:40

It's not funny but it's just young people flirting and being silly.

Did you ask to see their conversation?

comedycentral · 27/01/2025 21:41

jbirdy · 27/01/2025 21:38

Crikey, I'm not sure what he finds so sexy. Maybe it's the dark humour? Some people find this attractive. I'd leave them to it.

jbirdy · 27/01/2025 21:36

Oh, that went over my head. I couldn't fathom what was up at first.

I think you should stay out of it. Plenty of people use dark humour. It may not be your thing but it doesn't mean she's a psychopath.

OverthinkingOlive · 27/01/2025 21:41

I'm crude, immature and very hard to offend but I hate "real event" jokes. Especially about 9/11. Not funny.

Livelaughlurgy · 27/01/2025 21:41

I wouldn't joke about it but I saw it happen on tv. For them it's history, it probably doesn't feel real.

I asked what they were laughing at having no idea it was a text conversation, DD showed me voluntarily. If she had said it's a convo with someone I wouldn't have pressed.

CountessWindyBottom · 27/01/2025 21:42

Oh for goodness sake! It’s a bit of flirty banter between two young people. There are a lot bigger things to be clutching your pearls over!

BabysittersClub · 27/01/2025 21:42

My BIL was in the WTC on 9/11 and his mother, my husband's mother saw the second plane hit the tower. It took my BIL almost a whole day and a night to get home. We all thought he was dead.

It was just a joke, an attempt at flirting.

TappyGilmore · 27/01/2025 21:43

I didn’t get it but now that you’ve explained it … yeah not funny. At all. But at that age you can’t be policing their texts.

JandamiHash · 27/01/2025 21:43

I don’t get the joke but I’m not 22

What is with all the threads about overbearing mothers of early 20’s DDs at the moment?!

Honestly OP your DD (presumably) isnt a Neo Nazi, a crack dealer and doesn’t stab kittens, it seems that you’re one of those parents who are simply disappointed because your kids don’t have the same humour, personality and interests as you do

Sidebeforeself · 27/01/2025 21:43

Why are you asking them about it? They are adults leave them alone. And going and starting a thread about it…
