To think this isn't a funny joke and be disappointed in DD

DD1 (24) and DD2 (22) were sitting on the sofa together and DD1 showed DD2 her phone and they both burst out laughing. I asked why they were laughing and DD1 said just a message she had sent a guy she was talking to. They were talking about some celebrity and he said she was a 10/10 which led to this

DD - what am I then
Guy - 11
DD - You're a 9
DD - And together we are a fucking disaster
Guy - That might be the sexiest thing I've ever heard, well done
DD - Thank you

AIBU to think it wasn't a funny joking and this guys reaction was weird or is this just what young people are like now?

Witty, that.

And 9/11 jokes aren't particularly shocking, I remember hearing some on the BBC more than 10 years ago.

ToWhitToWhoo · 27/01/2025 23:21

Well, it's a bit of dark humour about something that happened when one DD wasn't yet born and the other was a baby. I probably wouldn't make a flippant joke about 9/11, which I remember all too well, but i might about the Titanic, which logically is similar joking about a disaster, just much longer ago.

If this had been my children I'd be having a word.

My 23 year old son has recently been to the 9/11 memorial and found it very upsetting so I'm confident he wouldn't be so stupid as to joke about something so terrible.

Too many times people are let off because of how old they are when they need to be told they are out of order.

unclench

People CAN and should make private jokes about anyone and anything they like. You are free to be offended but it's irrelevant and doesn't matter.

The only ones out of order are people like you trying to dictate what is acceptable. A private joke between 2 people has nothing to do with you.

This one wasn't even offensive, isn't 911 a disaster anyway?

PointsSouth · 27/01/2025 23:28

If that’s the extent to which she’s a disappointment to you, you’re laughing.

Or, in your case, not.

Kibble29 · 27/01/2025 23:30

Some of the replies on here. Can’t help but cringe at the outrage. You can’t police a grown adult’s humour. “I’d be having a word…”. Chill out. 🙄

ItGhoul · 27/01/2025 23:36

Oh FFS, you’re getting worked up about a mildly dark joke made in a private conversation between two grown adults? Take the stick out of your arse and move on.

I’m in my late 40s and some of the jokes my DP and I share in private make that conversation look like nothing.

Yep! I’m in my 30s and if my house was mic’d up, we’d probably be arrested for some of the jokes and comments that go on between myself and my DH. 😂

Lunde · 27/01/2025 23:45

9/11 is an event that happened several years before you DD was even born - it won't have the same meaning as those of us who remember watching the actual events unfold. Similar to those born in the 1950s/60s finding the "don't mention the War" sketch on Fawlty Towers funny.

But I don't even understand why you are getting second hand upset about a conversation that didn't even concern you.

9/11 was over 23 years ago. I remember flying in from Chicago that day from a visit with my then boyfriend and treating myself to a lie in, and waking up to hear my flatmate in our lounge listening to live news broadcasts about the attacks on the twin towers, and sitting together to watch in horror as people leapt from the buildings to their deaths, before one and then the other tower fell. I remember crying at the scenes of people who knew their family members were trapped, including those who had phoned their loved ones to say goodbye. They phoned their families to say goodbye for fucks sake and then they watched them die!

That's my recollection of the day, and OP you no doubt have yours which is just as traumatic I am sure.

But we are old(ish) and your DDs do not have these memories. I think you would be in order to mention to them that this was a day when many people lost their lives and many more lost their loved ones, but then let it rest.

They are being kids. Just pray for them that they never have to witness such events,

IridiumSky · 28/01/2025 00:07

I think the OP’s daughter is intelligent, quick-thinking, and witty.

Heredity can be unpredictable. 😀

CharSiu · 28/01/2025 00:18

Having a similar sense of humour is very important in relationships. As long as they are similar what does it matter if you think its funny. It is a clever quip.

Don't be such a Lemon sucker.

PennyApril54 · 28/01/2025 00:28

MissUltraViolet · 27/01/2025 21:40

It's not funny but it's just young people flirting and being silly.

Did you ask to see their conversation?

Yes mind your own business OP

BrightonFrock · 28/01/2025 01:46

I would get a grip pretty quickly.

HipToTheHopDontStop · 28/01/2025 01:49

I told my son (22) about this thread, he thought it was clever and mildly amusing.

Then he told me a 9/11 joke that made me snort tea out of my nose.

Firefly1987 · 28/01/2025 02:13

I'm surprised people think it's an ok thing to joke about tbh. Some things should be off limits. Will people be joking about Grenfell in 15 years time? Or is it just because 9/11 happened in America?

Hilarioushilda · 28/01/2025 02:15

9/11 should never be considered in joke in any form

It doesn't matter whether you found it funny or not.

What is really really weird is that you posted this on a public site and think that your opinion on a joke that your daughters shared should matter.

Was thinking the same. That would have been what the bloke found sexy, not the thought of 9/11 (which I watched live too, heavily pregnant with my first son, in abject horror)

poemsandwine · 28/01/2025 02:44

Largestlegocollectionever · 27/01/2025 21:48

I actually think it’s very quick witted of your daughter

Agree.

I wouldn't have made the joke, but I can't get offended. They're not joking that it didn't happen or shit like that.

poemsandwine · 28/01/2025 02:49

Why are you policing your adult daughter's humour anyway? That conversation had nothing to do with you.

Princessconsuelabananahammock9 · 28/01/2025 03:11

My 14 yo and his friends have made 9/11 jokes.

They don't get it. It's history for to them.

sashh · 28/01/2025 03:35

BlueSilverCats · 27/01/2025 21:58

I got the joke right away , so not sure what that says about me.Grin

The thing is, some people do enjoy dark humour. Different strokes for different folks. It's a thing. It was a bit daft of her to show you though, as you don't sound like that type of person.

I actually laughed. So what does that make me?

Agree Firefly. It’s not funny. It’s not OK. Do people joke about the Holocaust….I doubt it, I hope not!

So OP I vote YANBU it’s not funny it’s in bad taste. Hoping dd knows that

Mumtobabyhavoc · 28/01/2025 03:47

Not funny in the least.

oakleaffy · 28/01/2025 04:00

Didn't ''get'' the joke, and it's not even funny when explained..Don't know why they laughed?
