To think this isn't a funny joke and be disappointed in DD

jbirdy · 27/01/2025 21:33

DD1 (24) and DD2 (22) were sitting on the sofa together and DD1 showed DD2 her phone and they both burst out laughing. I asked why they were laughing and DD1 said just a message she had sent a guy she was talking to. They were talking about some celebrity and he said she was a 10/10 which led to this

DD - what am I then
Guy - 11
DD - You're a 9
DD - And together we are a fucking disaster
Guy - That might be the sexiest thing I've ever heard, well done
DD - Thank you

AIBU to think it wasn't a funny joking and this guys reaction was weird or is this just what young people are like now?

OP posts:

I actually laughed. So what does that make me?

Someone with a weak sense of humour?

IridiumSky · 28/01/2025 00:07

I think the OP’s daughter is intelligent, quick-thinking, and witty.

Heredity can be unpredictable. 😀

If you think that's witty, there is a definite dumbing down these days.

Sleepysleepycoffeecoffee · 28/01/2025 04:33

It’s a crap joke but I wouldn’t think any more of it if I were you

werideatdawnn · 28/01/2025 04:40

Oh leave off. Nothing to do with you. Weird you’re even posting about it or giving it the time of day.

meh2025 · 28/01/2025 04:41

meh2025 · 28/01/2025 02:16

It doesn't matter whether you found it funny or not.

What is really really weird is that you posted this on a public site and think that your opinion on a joke that your daughters shared should matter.

Edited

She's certainly quite quick, your daughter, I didn't get it until It was explained.

9/11 was 24 years ago and is just something she heard about and saw on YoutTube.

That's humanity for you, you won't ever stop young people making jokes about anything and everything.

This level of controlling interference in your daughter's perfectly normal, casual conversations is really really strange though and will not end well.

lemmein · 28/01/2025 04:57

I bet the lad didn't really get it!

sashh · 28/01/2025 05:43

AGovernmentOfLawsNotOfMen · 28/01/2025 03:40

Agree Firefly. It’s not funny. It’s not OK. Do people joke about the Holocaust….I doubt it, I hope not!

So OP I vote YANBU it’s not funny it’s in bad taste. Hoping dd knows that

I remember holocaust jokes. I have not heard any recently but yes they exist.

VotingForYourself · 28/01/2025 06:24

It's weird that he finds the joke sexy. He probably just wants to get in her pants.

Anyway, maybe next 9/11 you could put the videos from the day on the screen and light a candle for the victims. If she's never been shown it she won't realise how horrific it was

VotingForYourself · 28/01/2025 06:25

lemmein · 28/01/2025 04:57

I bet the lad didn't really get it!

Yeah l expect he was thinking of "911" or something or even "20" and then just thought he better laugh and tell her she's funny.

sashh · 28/01/2025 05:43

Of course there are, I can think of one I heard years ago right now, but as I personally find them deeply offensive wouldn't share that.

Up to other people what they laugh at though.

I'm surprised people think it's an ok thing to joke about tbh. Some things should be off limits. Will people be joking about Grenfell in 15 years time? Or is it just because 9/11 happened in America?

You, like most people, can't differentiate between the subject of a joke and the target of a joke.

And nothing is off limits in comedy. If it's funny, it's funny.

FastFood · 28/01/2025 09:27

Its a joke between two adults in the privacy of their texts, they're not on stage at the O2 FFS

DoAWheelie · 28/01/2025 10:30

It kinda works on two levels as well. At first I thought they meant 9+11 = 20 so together they are 20/20 i.e the pandemic / a disaster of a year.

It's not even that dark of a joke really, it only references the date and not the events or people involved. A dark joke to me would be more direct like "I'm falling for you faster than the towers fell" or something.

who makes you in charge?

Of course nothing should be off limits, people are free to joke about anything they want, and you are free to be offended, but again, it doesn't matter.

People are already joking about Grenfeld. As long as they keep it private, what's the problem

Sometimes people also make awful jokes to cope with tragedies and to accept impossible events.

Who wants to live in a world where someone dictate what you are allowed to joke about? It's not North Korea.

why wouldn't she realise today? The joke wasn't even offensive.

Even A dark joke to me would be more direct like "I'm falling for you faster than the towers fell" or something. would be fine in the privacy of an adult conversation

It doesn't take anything away from the tragedy.

JandamiHash · 28/01/2025 11:15

I have to say if I ever made my adult child watch an upsetting on the back of a joke they made to someone else that I didn’t like, I’d fully expect them to never visit me again and keep occasions like birthdays and Christmas to card exchanges. What is wrong with some people?!

BringOnFebBankHoliday · 28/01/2025 11:17

It's a joke you don't get, that's fine. Why disappointed in your DD? It wasn't aimed at you.
Stay out of their business in future.

JandamiHash · 28/01/2025 11:17

Also there’s a real serious conversation to be had about why, when we boil it down, all humour should be acceptable - even jokes that make us feel uncomfortable. Any other world and then you’re flirting with freedom of speech being taken away and nobody wants that. I’d rather other people made jokes I didn’t like than have any form of an Orwellian society

Right. I genuinely find the OPs post offensive. Not being sarcastic, I find the fact that she thinks she has the right to butt into her adult daughter's conversations and harass them over a nothing joke genuinely offensive.

I certainly wouldn't insist she take the post down though. She's allowed her opinions, however ridiculous I find them.

It's the quick wit thats sexy.

Is 9/11 any more horrific than anything else? America has killed a lot more than 3,000 people. Maybe show yourself some videos of those?

Valid point. I sometimes wonder about this, too.

Spot on tbh.

People always have and always will joke about tragedies.

9/11 jokes have been a thing, including in America, ever since it happened.

The OP's daughters joke was far milder than many televised jokes on the same subject.

BobbyBiscuits · 28/01/2025 18:38

@jbirdy in which case, it seems pretty harmless. If it wasn't then they wouldn't be laughing about it?

Shade17 · 28/01/2025 18:46

Wouldn’t have been funny on 12th Sep 2001 but now quite a clever joke.

Well hopefully the ones joking about it can at least spell it 🙄and there clearly are things off limits, no one will be joking about Southport.
