To think this isn't a funny joke and be disappointed in DD

jbirdy · 27/01/2025 21:33

DD1 (24) and DD2 (22) were sitting on the sofa together and DD1 showed DD2 her phone and they both burst out laughing. I asked why they were laughing and DD1 said just a message she had sent a guy she was talking to. They were talking about some celebrity and he said she was a 10/10 which led to this

DD - what am I then
Guy - 11
DD - You're a 9
DD - And together we are a fucking disaster
Guy - That might be the sexiest thing I've ever heard, well done
DD - Thank you

AIBU to think it wasn't a funny joking and this guys reaction was weird or is this just what young people are like now?

She was saying he's a 9 and she's an 11 - so 9/11 ... a disaster.

Meh. I quite like a bit of dark humour. I’d hate a child who was only ever serious and righteous

MissUltraViolet · 27/01/2025 21:44

I mean, look at the positive, the lad is bright enough to have got the 'joke' and most of us needed it to be explained.

Remaker · 27/01/2025 21:44

She was making a joke I wouldn’t dwell on it. The bloke however was just being desperate to insert a reference to sex into the conversation and I would point that out if it was my DD.

comedycentral · 27/01/2025 21:45

To be fair to the OP, she only asked what was funny, and they told her. I don't think she is actively asking to see their conversation history or policing their relationship.

NattyTurtle59 · 27/01/2025 21:47

I agree with a pp, you need to lighten up.

What is it with all the dreary seriousness at the moment?

RogueFemale · 27/01/2025 21:47

Yes YABU. Stop policing your daughter.

TheLurpackYears · 27/01/2025 21:48

Is his dad single? If they share a sense of humour then I'm in.

Largestlegocollectionever · 27/01/2025 21:48

I actually think it’s very quick witted of your daughter

Mummer123 · 27/01/2025 21:48

Ah lighten up OP.

I was thinking it was something to do with the number 20 😂 it’s like a 1% club question 🤣

BobbyBiscuits · 27/01/2025 21:51

They're flirting/bantering?! What's so bad about it. It's a bit mean that your daughters were laughing at the blokes expense, but surely they are all well aware of what they're doing?
I would try not to get so involved in those type exchanges which are clearly not aimed at you.

I don't think they were laughing at the guy, they were laughing at the joke DD made.

CrushingOnRubies · 27/01/2025 21:53

I mean it's not in the best of taste. But it's just two people trying to flirt

You say your DD is 24 so she was just a baby when 9/11 happened. So maybe she doesn't get the magnitude of it. Sorry can't think of the right word

Like it was another date in history or something

Aftergloww · 27/01/2025 21:54

lol to be fair on them it’s a clever joke if you’re into that sort of dark (maybe a bit childish) humour

ZebedeeDougalFlorence · 27/01/2025 21:54

Icanflyhigh · 27/01/2025 21:36

Say what now??

None of that makes any sense!

Yeah, as far as I'm concerned this is youthspeak and I don't speak that language. Leave them to it, OP.

YoungGunsHavingSomeFunCrazyLadiesKeepEmOnTheRun · 27/01/2025 21:37

It didn't happen in their lifetime. Where we remember exactly what it was like, they have just read about it.

I don't really find it funny, but it's 2 youngsters making a joke about a historical event. Hardly uncommon.

This. I took a student group to the 9/11 museum in NYC. I thought it was incredibly moving. For them, who had been 2/3 years old when it happened, it wasn’t of any more real significance than a museum with WW2 artefacts.

BlueSilverCats · 27/01/2025 21:58

I got the joke right away , so not sure what that says about me.Grin

The thing is, some people do enjoy dark humour. Different strokes for different folks. It's a thing. It was a bit daft of her to show you though, as you don't sound like that type of person.

HolyPeaches · 27/01/2025 22:00

Some people like dark humour, and some people don’t.

Some will wholeheartedly agree with you OP and find it disturbing, others would call you a “snowflake”.

Obviously not all young people are like that.

I’d try and move on from it. Not worth a reaction tbh.

Yes I agree with this.
I think people who were adults when it happened perhaps wouldn't joke about it, but younger people think may not understand just how awful and how world changing it was.

whynotwhatknot · 27/01/2025 22:09

you havent seen family guy have you -that sort of humour

i thought it was quite witty

booisbooming · 27/01/2025 22:12

It's funny, jeez. She's too good for him.

If you all think that's in poor taste you're going to flip out when you hear about 'Allo 'Allo!

Crushed23 · 27/01/2025 22:15

This thread reminds me of my fling with a 21 year-old last year. Him and his friends have a similar sense of humour. Got to love the younger end of Gen Z. 💜

Allthatwegotisthispalebluedot · 27/01/2025 22:15

9/11 was horrible. I will never ever forget watching it happen and the sense that the whole world had changed. I was 13 when it happened and it was absolutely unfathomable.

But come on! To the youth of today it’s probably like the Vietnam war or the miner’s strike or Chernobyl or Diana’s car crash or JFK being killed. Something you vividly remember as important and shocking if you were alive and old enough to form memories but if you weren’t, it was just something bad that happened to other people a long time ago. Thats a good thing though because it’s testament to human resilience.

Comedy = tragedy + time or whatever the saying is!

Oh come on, do you really think the Gen Z kids invented dark humor?

Ever met a guy called Shakespeare?

Katbum · 27/01/2025 22:18

If she made the joke to you it would be reasonable to be offended. She didn't. You are not involved in this and making this thread is a very strange way to deal with your lack of centrality. You do not have to find jokes not told to you funny. People usually aim humour to a target audience. Seems like it landed.
