To think this isn't a funny joke and be disappointed in DD

DD1 (24) and DD2 (22) were sitting on the sofa together and DD1 showed DD2 her phone and they both burst out laughing. I asked why they were laughing and DD1 said just a message she had sent a guy she was talking to. They were talking about some celebrity and he said she was a 10/10 which led to this

DD - what am I then
Guy - 11
DD - You're a 9
DD - And together we are a fucking disaster
Guy - That might be the sexiest thing I've ever heard, well done
DD - Thank you

AIBU to think it wasn't a funny joking and this guys reaction was weird or is this just what young people are like now?

Oh come on, do you really think the Gen Z kids invented dark humor?

Ever met a guy called Shakespeare?

It's amazing what Shakespeare invented, isn't it? People don't realise that "jet fuel can't melt steel beams" is actually from Henry V.

BoredZelda · 27/01/2025 22:21

That's quite witty. It wasn't making fun of 9/11. It was referring to it as a disaster. Which it was. Where's the problem?

Namechangefordaughterevasion · 27/01/2025 22:21

I'm in my 60s and it made me laugh.

I remember being in Belfast and our taxi driver made a joke George Best and the Titantic - one was a fucking disaster and the other one sank. That made me laugh too.

Dita73 · 27/01/2025 22:22

You need to unclench. It’s really not a big deal

Pigeonqueen · 27/01/2025 22:23

You remind me of my Mum getting offended over something similar when dh and I started dating. It was so cringey of her and really caused a lot of bad feeling between us all when it was clearly meant to be a joke. Just let it go!

SallyWD · 27/01/2025 22:24

CountessWindyBottom · 27/01/2025 21:42

Oh for goodness sake! It’s a bit of flirty banter between two young people. There are a lot bigger things to be clutching your pearls over!

Indeed

MonochromePig · 27/01/2025 22:25

Think this is a perfect example of ”fuck around and find out”.

strawberrycrumbles · 27/01/2025 22:26

It's a private joke, nothing to do with you.

You do know you can laugh about ANYTHING, just not with anyone?

You are being ridiculous to be "disappointed" in your DD, are you always so dramatic?

BigDeepBreaths · 27/01/2025 22:35

YABU to be disappointed in your DD, yes! Honestly, wise up.

HipToTheHopDontStop · 27/01/2025 22:35

jbirdy · 27/01/2025 21:36

She was saying he's a 9 and she's an 11 - so 9/11 ... a disaster.

That's kinda funny. What's your problem?

SallyWD · 27/01/2025 22:37

Quite a clever joke. Mind your own business next time.

Cantrushart · 27/01/2025 22:40

I got that completely wrong. I assumed OP was in the US and they meant 911. But I guess that would have been an emergency, not a disaster.

2025willbemytime · 27/01/2025 22:43

If this had been my children I'd be having a word.

My 23 year old son has recently been to the 9/11 memorial and found it very upsetting so I'm confident he wouldn't be so stupid as to joke about something so terrible.

Too many times people are let off because of how old they are when they need to be told they are out of order.

Ottika · 27/01/2025 22:44

It's just play, teasing, young boy, young girl, surely people remember that?

It isn't funny because it wasn't meant to be read by other people. It's intimate and just a bit of harmless fun.

Phones are a fucking travesty.

jbirdy · 27/01/2025 21:36

She was saying he's a 9 and she's an 11 - so 9/11 ... a disaster.

It was a silly childish insensitive thing to say but as neither of your DDs were probably even born at the time of the event they might not understand how awfull it was at the time….hard to believe it was that long ago, seems like yesterday

Ottika · 27/01/2025 22:45

What I can't get my head around is why anyone would make a post about this on the internet. It's just so...nothing.

Viviennemary · 27/01/2025 22:46

It was in poor taste and not a bit funny.

Anon501178 · 27/01/2025 22:48

I'm with you OP.....too many people go around laughing stuff like this off and making offensive 'jokes' and get away with it.Celebrities like Jimmy carr don't help.I would be letting DD know how disappointed I was in her for joking about such a horrible tragic event, and if she doesn't know about how awful it was maybe she needs to be watching some videos to be educated about it.Or visit ground zero which is a very humbling experience.

Unclench. I watched 9/11 happen, cry when I watch a documentary about it, and have visited Ground Zero. And I found her joke witty!

2025willbemytime · 27/01/2025 22:59

You don't have to be alive to understand how terrible something was. There's footage every where, books, documentaries etc.

Gggglinda · 27/01/2025 23:00

most of the young people flirt with banter / dark humour these days, especially online.

Anonymous2003 · 27/01/2025 23:02

Jesus Christ, back off mum.

AshCrapp · 27/01/2025 23:02

At the end of the day, 9/11 was a really fucking long time ago to someone their age, before they were even born. It's history. And compared to so many things that have happened in their own life time, not a massive deal. It was just a joke. I wouldn't be surprised if the guy hadn't got it, and was just looking for any excuse to call her sexy.

Reading that exchange has made me feel nostalgic for a time when a good looking boy could say almost any fucking word salad and I'd be into it, if I was into him already! Ah how times have changed, now I'm older and much more easily irritated.

jbirdy · 27/01/2025 21:36

Gosh that v clever and went above my head!

heddy007 · 27/01/2025 23:07

they could have meant 911 as in who you contact in the event of a disaster/emergency???
either way i would let it go too… not worth wasting your energy on them explaining.
