To think eventually, UK could become a part of the USA?

Depending on how Trump gets on … he doesn’t seem shy about taking over other countries. On paper it would make sense globally for the UK and the USA to become one … USA, Canada,UK - what a superpower that would be.

on top of this, there is a hell of a lot of UK support for Trump, I don’t even think the British would object to a takeover on the whole

Seems far fetched I know - but less far fetched that it did a few years ago

Obviously the justice system is imperfect. If it was not then Trump would be where he belongs. In prison.

The justice system in the US is aligned with and picked via political parties.

The justice system in the UK is independent of any political parties.

The US system is fucked in the head for this reason. You can't have justice if it has an ideological bias.

Well, we do have Police and Crime Commissioners, courtesy of the previous government, and they are absolutely politically aligned. That was and is a step in the wrong direction.

WaryCrow · 31/01/2025 17:14

U.K. justice system might be independent of political party bias, but it is now entirely ruled by money. It’s gone back to Victorian times, when law was there to protect the property of the rich. The rest of us have no recourse to it. Lawlessness is spreading.

I think the main point is that the justices in all courts here are picked independently of political bias, and the political parties are not allowed to influence the process of nomination.

Contrast that with the fact that the very same process is explicitly political in the US. It's the main reason that there's no remaining balance against Trump's agenda - the Republicans control both Houses, the Presidency and the Supreme Court, as well as the DoJ itself.

Here, on the other hand, there is no consequence for the Supreme Court giving the government a black eye when it's breaking the law. That's a hugely important thing.

Are you for real? So you want your rights as a women taken away from you, your daughters and every other women in this country. You want a man to decide on your reproductive rights? If this is case please move to the USA

This has to be the dumbest thing I've read today.

Sadly, look at some of the reform comments This is one of them.

Serpentstooth · 06/02/2025 08:12

I see Reform voters are quite keen on this. But what about Sovereignty? That's the hill on which you claim you'd live or die. No more Rule Britannia. No Last night of the Proms. The Orange Dream and cohort camping it up in Buck House and turning Hyde Park into a golf course. Melanie and Ivanka on the red carpet wearing the Crown Jewels. You need to think it through people. I dont think you'd like it.

Come now! Perhaps somewhere a little more liberal?

Saudi Arabia, or Afghanistan, perhaps?

No one has ever accused reform voters of making sense.

Good news! As a retired American military officer I say with authority that your token deployments hindered more than helped, at least in Helmand. The chain of command was a cluster fuck

Why on earth is an American military officer posting on a British forum predominately for women and parents?! Is Reddit closed today?

The poster is possibly female.

Quite so. Women have served in the US Army since 1948. West Point admitted women in 1976, and women currently comprise about 15% of the active duty force. There have been women general officers for decades.

I am a female who served in the US Army. For many people who serve, it's a family tradition.

Serpentstooth · 07/02/2025 17:47

Those of you who haven't yet lost your minds over the USA Circus, how long do you think it will be before USA realises what it has unleashed by voting for the clowns? And, when that happens, what will they do? I feel quite Cassandra-like.

They won’t. They’re mostly happy with how it’s going. Do you honestly think that your little cohort of deluded Lefty MNetters are in any way representative of how the majority of US citizens think? They voted for this, they knew what they were getting and they wanted it.

I don’t think they had a clue what they were getting. And I don’t think anyone on the planet can foresee what they’re going to do between now and 2028. If anyone’s deluded it’s someone who bases an opinion on 18 days in power.

Serpentstooth · 07/02/2025 19:43

I was asking those who haven't lost their minds. Most Americans who have voted for the corrupt and depraved current government are going to discover what they've got fairly shortly. So reminiscent of Brexit; We want it! What is it? We dont know but we want it now. Hurrah. All those Brexit voters knew what they wanted and thought they'd voted for it. It's all going fabulously well isn't it?

You make it sound like the election was a massive landslide for Trump, whereas what really happened was that a lot of people stayed home, the electoral system worked in his favour and the popular vote was incredibly close. It's more realistic to say that pretty much half of America is currently going 'Oh shit'.

Voter turnout looks high compared to most US presidential elections - although not as high as 2020 (which had the highest turnout rate for any national election since 1900):

I wouldn't go by mners. US voters who were happy with the election probably still are and that could be the case throughout. There's not much from those voters on here.

That doesn't make the popular vote not close, though.

I didn't say it did. I was rather querying the claim that a lot of people stayed at home - whereas the turnout was comparatively high (compared to most presidential elections).

I am more than disgusted that the very old outdated and dangerous trump is still spouting his nonsense and basically trying to buy countries that he should keep his beak out of he should be looking at himself in a mirror and admitting to the awful things he’s done the way he does things is I’ll throw money around and idiotic people accept it so he buys them why’s that - do they have no back bone can’t say no trump the fraud frump bully “man I use that term very loosely he’s not a man “ he’s a dictator is he related to Hitler Putin Starmer they are all dictators I hear Siberia is very nice and cold put them all in a playpen with deep foundations and a concrete floor and roof absolutely no security around them and let’s see how they survive - water can be obtained via the snow and ice - they are supposedly to be smart see how they suffer and try and survive anyway - why should people have to listen to their lies any longer it’s disgusting starmer trump Putin live in lovely warm houses can afford food pay themselves huge salaries take trips abroad they don’t pay for which most are totally unnecessary and useless Putin is too frightened to leave Russian territory what a coward he is

hold OAPS to ransom and threaten to tax them in Starmers case

You are the one that is deluded as you think that anybody who doesn't agree with you is learning anything from your rantings! Equally hilarious that you think MN is left wing, especially these days, it is not, it is just British! Many, Many people in the UK are centred in their politics whether that is to the right or left. That's the reality and the politics unfolding in the U.S is a real demonstration of why it should really try to remain so!

There are millions of Americans that didn't vote for Trump that his administration should care about, they are still, after all, US citizens.
