To think eventually, UK could become a part of the USA?

Depending on how Trump gets on … he doesn’t seem shy about taking over other countries. On paper it would make sense globally for the UK and the USA to become one … USA, Canada,UK - what a superpower that would be.

on top of this, there is a hell of a lot of UK support for Trump, I don’t even think the British would object to a takeover on the whole

Seems far fetched I know - but less far fetched that it did a few years ago

The Economic policy being pursued by the U.S government would not be something that lands well in Europe (including UK) as generally the European public as US economic policy that benefits the super rich (how much money do you need to be happy, one has to ask!) and us diametrically opposed to the interests of the poor, would make our governments even less able to provide the services citizens expect, and our societies even more unequal.

That should read, 'the European public (including UK) don't want a U.S. Style Economic policy that simply benefits the super rich, that is diametrically opposed to the interests of the poorest.

Curryingfavour · 29/01/2025 09:44

Oh my gosh, have you just woken up from a nightmare and started typing it all on Mumsnet ??

dynamiccactus · 29/01/2025 10:17

Not RTFT but have you read the book "Rule Britannia" by Daphne du Maurier?

It is set in a time when the UK has left the EEC (as the EU then was) and joins the US.

bombastix · 29/01/2025 10:22

Didn't Daphne Du Maurier write horror and psychological chillers? This sounds like another one.

You hate immigrants so much that you're happy to overlook the fact that he's a felon, rapist, racist and general all round piece of shit?!!

Lovely.

He is not a rapist. And believe it or that is my opinion. Last time I looked, we can still have those 😆

He is.

Unless you believe that the reason only 1% of rapes ends in prosecution is that 99% are false allegations?

Because either that’s true or the justice system is imperfect.

Except he is, he’s been convicted in a civil court of rape. He has bragged about sexual assault as well.

He was found liable in court for sexual assault. It's not a matter of opinion, it's a legally binding finding, he also had to pay E Jean Caroll extra damages for libelling her, regarding the verdict.

You can choose to imagine that he's been persecuted and lied about, but that's not an opinion, it's a ludicrous denial of the facts.

😂 …tell me you don’t have a clue about economics without telling me.

GDP is a misleading measure - it's not remotely related to quality of life, which is what this thread's (largely) about, especially in a society that's as skewed towards the ultra-rich as the US. In a normal country, a higher GDP per capita would at least translate into higher tax yield and thus better public services, but the political skew of the US doesn't allow that either; the idea of public services benefiting the public is "socialism" and thus cannot be allowed.

If you had a clue about economics, you'd already know that the more unequal a society in terms of wealth, the more useless GDP per capita is as a metric because it's an average...and the US is just about the most unequal economy in the developed world. If you don't believe me, then remove the top and bottom 5% and recalculate it. I guarantee it'll look worse than even ours does in the UK, and that's quite something.

So, I guess the question is...why do you think it's a worthwhile metric as applied to the US economy?

This has to be the dumbest thing I've read today.

95% have voted you are an idiot, OP!

Laurmolonlabe · 29/01/2025 17:05

It's not easier to pay people less, it's just far better if you are very rich, we have to accept that the very rich run our government and pretty much all the other governments. Building more houses has not brought the cost of housing down in my lifetime (63 years) it isn't going to do so now, no matter how many houses are built-there is no housing crisis for those that can afford the prices-there's a huge amount of supply , mostly bought by foreign investors-more houses built more houses will be bought by foreign investors-they have not wish to lower rents, many of the properties stay empty because they are purely for investment.

Building more houses will solve absolutely nothing, people can only live closer to work if they can afford it-building more houses which are not affordable will not do it, developers will not build affordable housing because they make less profit, they can't be forced-which is why in the past affordable housing was built by the government, but they won't build more they will just sell more of the ones they have.

I suspect 5% were either being polite, ironic, or both.

Grammarnut · 29/01/2025 18:23

No. Any more than Canada will (the US tried that one in 1812 and got their Capitol and the White House burned as well as their own fingers). There is a deep, deep cultural divide and also a huge amount of water.

Of course we all get an opinion - you are here giving yours, no? - but it is interesting that some are happy to bury facts about this truly abhorrent 'man' by, let me guess, branding reports 'false news'?

Many see him for what he is and yes, judge those who are happy to accept his hideousness.

Like it or lump it. That's the reality.

There are none so blind as those that won't see.

Fartypants83 · 30/01/2025 13:14

There is a lot of these far right troll posts at the moment, generally seeking to subtly provide legitimacy to right wing politicians, but actually being very obvious about it.

Some are funny.

This one is really, really funny!

ShortColdandGrey · 30/01/2025 13:22

That is the stupidest thing I have read for a while and for the posters that said they would prefer Trump to Starmer you should lose your right to vote 😂You would like to have a would be dictator in charge of the UK?

Baloneyhahaboohoo · 30/01/2025 16:53

Are you mad ? Would we be speaking in horrible shouty American accents it’ll never happen - UK will remain as it is - do you want someone like creepy trump who thinks he can buy Greenland? The man can’t even make his so called business ideas to pay off- they didn’t succeed suggest you go and live in the USA the country that sanctions guns and executions - GOODBYE

pestowithwalnuts · 30/01/2025 16:55

Couldn't think of anything worse.
What a stupid idea

Baloneyhahaboohoo · 30/01/2025 16:57

What errors are you referring

Baloneyhahaboohoo · 30/01/2025 18:22

Trump is an OLD FOOL needs to retire

Serpentstooth · 30/01/2025 18:49

He is a rapist, fact, adjudicated by law, not opinion. He is also pp, an old fool. Have you heard him today, opining on the Washington tragedy? A disgusting man purveying misinformation in order to foment racial disorder.

Hi ex wife Ivana also accused him of rape then withdrew it when he first became President.

Also did we ever find out what he was doing on that island with Epstein?
