Spaghetti is the default pasta

RawBloomers · 26/01/2025 20:44

My DH asked me what I’d like to eat and I said pasta and pasta sauce. I was picturing spaghetti with a lovely tomato and basil sauce, generously sprinkled with black pepper and parmesan. This is also DC1’s favourite meal.

Spaghetti is the default pasta and should be assumed if no particular type of pasta is mentioned. AIBU?

He has made a mix of penne pasta and macaroni. And put sausage in the sauce. I want to pout and stamp my feet like a four year old. (I have not I have thanked him and told him how lovely he is).

There is plenty of spaghetti in the cupboard. We only have penne in because they had no spaghetti in the shop once, months ago. We only have macaroni in because DC2 likes mac&cheese and I make it - for them alone - from time to time. He made this penne/macaroni monstrosity for me and DC1 as DC2 has already eaten and he had something different. He and all right thinking people should know better, right?

I would say penne or fusilli are the default. However mixing pastas is absolutely psychotic!

Sassysoonwins · 26/01/2025 21:01

I hate penne, always takes longer than it should to cook. Fusilli is our default pasta, spaghetti is spaghetti and is asked for specifically unless we're having meatballs, then of course it's with spaghetti. I'd forgotten about farfalle (sp) or dicky bows, might get some in just for a change as they're pretty.

Mixing pasta types is definitely out of order though, is he quite well?

Maybe it is a sign of cognitive decline and I should get him to see the GP?

We've recently discovered bucatini and it is so much better than spaghetti

Different pasta works with different sauces, because the texture of the sauce needs to work with the shape of the pasta to create the optimal stickiness. For example, bolognese sauce should never go with spaghetti.

Sausage meet in pasta is lovely. It would probably work with penne.

Mixing two pasta shapes is unacceptable under any circumstances. You have my blessing, if you need it, to LTB.

Yet we have spaghetti bolognase.

APushbikeNamedReluctance · 26/01/2025 21:26

I'm feeling quite rebellious and wild. I like tagliatelle with bolognese.

There's another pasta, which i can't recall the name of that feels fancy with bolognese. Least iit does when you're as easily impressed as me, just because it's a pasta not on the shelf in Aldi. 🤣

Isn't that conchiglie?

Terrible stuff, but better than gnocci!

It says gnocchi on the package 🤷🏼‍♀️

Spaghetti is the default pasta
allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 26/01/2025 21:26

@RawBloomers not a lover of past in general but will eat a bit of spag boll or lasagne. wouldnt touch macaroni and cheese even though I love cheese sauce with fish!

RawBloomers · 26/01/2025 21:27

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 26/01/2025 21:24

@RawBloomers is there any difference in the ingredients??? arent most pastas are made with the same stuff! just the way they are cut or shaped is different!

Edited

I believe so. But I refuse to see the relevance of your question! [throws toys]

Penne or Fussili is default pasta.

Spaghetti is strictly for bolognaise or carbonara.

Mixing pasta is monstrous (Although I've done it on several occasions when I've been running low)

Is it tapeworm related?

It is
I saw with mine own eyes (friends cat ) and I was instantly put off .
The pasta , not cats

Sugargliderwombat · 26/01/2025 21:28

Penne and spaghetti are both disgusting. Rigatoni is the default pasta.

Who the hell mixes pasta?!!!

RawBloomers · 26/01/2025 21:28

Oh! Well at least I've learnt something. So not an entirely pointless thread!

Penne is the default in our house. Was always much easier than spaghetti when we had young kids because they could just pick up a piece with a fork or fingers and shove it in whereas spaghetti was a pain in the arse. They are adults and teens now and I buy spaghetti about once every 5 years. Prefer linguine to spaghetti anyhow.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 26/01/2025 21:30

My Mum said she saw on a TV show that if you mix pasta shapes you eat more because your brain likes the differences .

'Tis stuff and nonsense , it cooks at different rates and I think she CBA buying a new bag of it

RawBloomers · 26/01/2025 21:30

Trepidfox · 26/01/2025 21:24

Is it weird that I love spaghetti but dislike pasta? I find it so bulky and fills me up after 4 bites? 🤷🏻‍♀️

Not weird. Right.

I don't know what all these other posters are smoking.

IhadaStripeyDeckchair · 26/01/2025 21:30

Spaghetti is one of the least used pastas because it's far too messy when children eat it
Penne or fusilli is the default pasta, not the bows the pinch means that part of it either over or under cooked.

Mum2jenny · 26/01/2025 21:30

Spaghetti is not the default pasta in this house. I prefer spirali or fusilli or penne for general usage.

BunnyLake · 26/01/2025 21:30

I really hate mixing different pastas so penne and macaroni together wouldn’t be great for me.

I only really use penne (or fusilli) if we’ve run out of spaghetti but i always use them if I’m making tuna pasta.

I would have used spaghetti with your sauce unless I planned on turning it into a pasta bake.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 26/01/2025 21:30

The worst thing about that meal, OP, is that he mixed different pasta together.

He's clearly - like DP, who seems to believe it's an acceptable state of affairs, along with breaking spaghetti into unlucky little shards as though I'm incapable of using a fork - a monster.

SemperIdem · 26/01/2025 21:31

Penne is the default pasta shape unless specifically making a bolognese in which case, tagliatelle.

I actively dislike spaghetti as a pasta option.

Mixing pasta should be a a criminal offence. A minor one perhaps, but an offence nevertheless.

User781 · 26/01/2025 21:31

Default in my house is penne. Spaghetti is for pesto, carbonara and similar. If I had more cupboards, I wouldn't have a default and would try to match the shapes and sauces properly! (I have family in Italy...)

UnderandOverwhelmed · 26/01/2025 21:31

Rigatoni is the default pasta for me, spaghetti is used very rarely

andHelenknowsimmiserablenow · 26/01/2025 21:32

Penne or rigantoni is default here, they hold the sauce lovely- except for with bolognese, or meatballs and sauce, which is always with spaghetti, and I do snap it to get it all in the pan.

Waffle19 · 26/01/2025 21:32

Hard disagree on this, if someone said pasta I would assume penne or at a push fusilli. Also linguine is far superior to spaghetti.

And sausage in pasta is great with a bit of fennel and chilli.

APushbikeNamedReluctance · 26/01/2025 21:32

I've looked up the word for a single strand of spaghetti

It better be on the next quiz i do!!
