We have a friend with a birthday in a few weeks.

The number one song when he was born was ‘Cinderella Rockafella.’

As you’ve possibly guessed - if this was his birthday number one - he’s still a young lad and might be a bit shy and self conscious when it comes ti things like showy displays ! 🙌

His birthday’s at the beginning of March.

What my partner and I would love to do is an impromptu dance to this song when we all visit the local social club in a few weeks to celebrate his birthday.

I’m busy learning the exact lyrics for this song already!

i personally LOVE this song although some people apparently find it a bit twee

SO -

YANBU - it’s a lovely, gesture and great to take initiative at a time when most people are busy scrolling their phones and CBA to make an effort for anyone or anything!

YABU - ‘Cinderella Rockafella’ is a novelty record sung by seasoned performers and the ‘Average Joes’ of this world can’t carry off such a performance without it looking extremely naff!

OP did you post around 20 years ago about letting your child take a super soaker to a birthday party? Because I’m getting the same vibes…

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 26/01/2025 18:02

I can't answer for your friend OP but if someone did this for me I would slide under the table the minute they began singing and probably stay there until my next birthday.

MargaretThursday · 26/01/2025 18:02

If you really want to serenade him, then you can do a video of you doing it, and send it privately to him.
If you want to make your birthday about you, and embarrass him for no reason. Then do it in person.

FireandBrimstone · 26/01/2025 18:03

OP - reading your replies to the responses on here, it's very clear you are utterly, utterly tone deaf.

Yet another reason not to sing.

Moveoverdarlin · 26/01/2025 18:03

LostittoBostik · 26/01/2025 17:55

Oh my god - how old is he? If he's any younger than 35 (I don't know the song) PLEASE do not do this .

I didn’t know the song either. Stick it in You Tube, I’ve just done it. If you thought the OP’s suggestion was cringey wait until you hear the fucking song. You’ll thank me later.

SoNiceToComeHomeTo · 26/01/2025 18:03

Oh God no, poor chap. How embarrassing. Great if you and DH want to practice this for fun, but don't link it to someone else's birthday.

Andoutcomethewolves · 26/01/2025 18:03

Dear God, I'd never heard of this song so just looked it up on YouTube. I cringed enough just sat on my own and watching the actual 'artists' performing the song. I'd have to leave the room if this happened at a party I was attending, let alone a party that was meant to be for MY birthday 😬

Attention seeking and hugely embarrassing for all involved. Don't do it.

SquashPenguin · 26/01/2025 18:03

No way this is real.

fluffiphlox · 26/01/2025 18:03

Please don’t.

MrsMitford3 · 26/01/2025 18:04

TheEnterainer · 26/01/2025 17:26

No neither of us are performer types.

We’d be doing it as something very ‘different’ that he might enjoy as its something not many people can be bothered to do

I think there is a very clear reason why "not many people can be bothered to do it"

Scentsitive · 26/01/2025 18:04

SquashPenguin · 26/01/2025 18:03

No way this is real.

I fall for it every time!

burnerusernameumpteen · 26/01/2025 18:04

Please don't.

I am about a week older than your friend and I thank the Flying Spaghetti Monster that I was born when Manfred Mann's "The Mighty Quinn" was number one rather than the abomination that is Cinderella Rockafella.

I Googled that to check I was right and there's a fairly recent thread on just that subject.

To wish that ‘Mighty Quinn’ by Manfred Mann was number one in the charts ? | Mumsnet

This, really. i really think this song represents the best era not only for music. but for fashion and cars as well (if we can peel our thighs off th...

whatsinanameeh · 26/01/2025 18:04

This is something you do for your own birthday, not somebody else's just don't make all about you like this

PolytheneRam · 26/01/2025 18:05

Christ no. Don't do it.

soupyspoon · 26/01/2025 18:06

TheEnterainer · 26/01/2025 17:21

I take it you’re not the kind of person who likes being serenaded at the dinner table by the resident hotel musician when on a Mediterranean holiday ?

Is there anyone that likes this?

Sophiasguitar · 26/01/2025 18:06

I’ve just googled the song. Can’t be real. Are they yodelling?

sixtyandfabulousofcourse · 26/01/2025 18:06

when i was a young toddler that song was in the charts so mum used to sing it to me
one day i was at the bus stop with her a packed bus stop and i yelled sing rockapella mum!

SheridansPortSalut · 26/01/2025 18:06

Are you on drugs?

Didshejustsaythatoutloud · 26/01/2025 18:06

NooNakedJacuzziness · 26/01/2025 17:46

I'd sell a kidney to watch it

I'll throw one in too 😁

Muddledandmiddle · 26/01/2025 18:06

This cannot be a serious thread.

ManchesterPie · 26/01/2025 18:07

It's a hideous song and I'd shoot anyone serenading mw with that.

TidyDancer · 26/01/2025 18:07

This is a reverse isn't it and someone did this to you and they are wondering why you didn't love it, right?

mihinobis · 26/01/2025 18:07

Good lord no.
This would be absolutely horrific.
Don't know if you're on a wind-up to be honest because no one in their right mind would think this was a good idea.

DoloresODonovan · 26/01/2025 18:09

Nanny0gg · 26/01/2025 17:58

I'd rather the floor opened up and ate them alive

I'm assuming that this is a total windup from someone who thinks they're funny

quite possibly - someone overexcited and hasty enough
to describe themselves as The Enterainer -
who isn’t funny and is possibly being sly

Differentstarts · 26/01/2025 18:09

🤣🤣 no just no 🙈
