We have a friend with a birthday in a few weeks.

The number one song when he was born was ‘Cinderella Rockafella.’

As you’ve possibly guessed - if this was his birthday number one - he’s still a young lad and might be a bit shy and self conscious when it comes ti things like showy displays ! 🙌

His birthday’s at the beginning of March.

What my partner and I would love to do is an impromptu dance to this song when we all visit the local social club in a few weeks to celebrate his birthday.

I’m busy learning the exact lyrics for this song already!

i personally LOVE this song although some people apparently find it a bit twee

SO -

YANBU - it’s a lovely, gesture and great to take initiative at a time when most people are busy scrolling their phones and CBA to make an effort for anyone or anything!

YABU - ‘Cinderella Rockafella’ is a novelty record sung by seasoned performers and the ‘Average Joes’ of this world can’t carry off such a performance without it looking extremely naff!

I take it you’re not the kind of person who likes being serenaded at the dinner table by the resident hotel musician when on a Mediterranean holiday ?

Is anyone?????!!

Megifer · 26/01/2025 21:22

I know this is obviously a joke, because no one would consider this, but I've still just had to have a Nytol to make sure I don't wake up in the night and accidentally think about someone doing this. I'd never get back to sleep with the anxiety 😕

Hillrunning · 26/01/2025 21:23

Can you try to tell us exactly what would be enjoyable for this man to have two people ding and dance badly at him in a social club in his birthday? Specifically what?

TheChosenTwo · 26/01/2025 21:26

Omg I’ve just cringed myself inside out reading this thread 🫣
I’m mortified for you that you have been practising this already but glad you’ve seen sense.
I’m embarrassed just reading the OP again, if I were in the room when the performance happened I’d have to leave pretty sharpish.
It’s not about you!

NattyTurtle59 · 26/01/2025 21:20

I actually think it sounds like a great idea OP, but there really is no use us giving our opinions as you are the only one who knows whether or not he would appreciate the gesture. A lot of people I know would love to have you perform in their honour (but then the people I know are most definitely un-MN types, i.e. they like socialising and fun!)

I love the song btw.

Thanks - I love it too ❤️

Fuck no, it’s an awful song.
i don’t really get your insistence that as he is young at heart, thus a dreadful panto-esque performance would entertain him.
if you must make a ‘ display’ of yourselves pick a song from his youth.
Frankie goes to Hollywood ‘Relax’ perhaps ??

Stravaig · 26/01/2025 21:29

Thanks to this thread, I've looked up some of mine 😆

I hate the #1 song in my birth country; the UK's is one of the great female vocalists; and the USA's is an iconic song I know from many a soundtrack.

However the Canadian #1 is so fantastic I may have a wee dance after posting (no witnesses :), so thanks for this discovery, OP 🤗.

fairycakes1234 · 26/01/2025 21:16

Embarrassed for you calling someone a muppet😔

You are right, the Muppets are good

Localres · 26/01/2025 21:30

God just buy the poor man an actual present like a normal human being. Something he’d actually like.

Crazybaby123 · 26/01/2025 21:31

Sorry OP but I am now imagining the end of the performance. It ends, everyone is stunned, you can hear a pin drop, noone knows what to say. OP and husband walk silently back to their seats and take sips of their drinks. OP says to the birthday boy, so what did you think? Birthday boy has no words and is worried about what is next in store 😂

luckylavender · 26/01/2025 21:35

Sounds awful. Will he even know what it is? I wouldn't.

TappyGilmore · 26/01/2025 21:38

I didn’t know this song and had to look it up. I think YABU only because the song really sucks. If it was a better song then maybe.

At my mother’s birthday party recently we all looked up what was #1 on the days that we were born. Mine was I Will Survive so at least that’s a fantastic song!!!

TheEnterainer · 26/01/2025 21:17

He’s still lthe teenager I was when I first met him to me !! Grin

This thread is hilarious 🤣

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 26/01/2025 21:44

Why are you making it all about YOU.
It's not your birthday, nor that of your partners.

Fourecks · 26/01/2025 21:55

ACatAsleepInYourHat · 26/01/2025 17:24

How is he still a "young lad" when this was a hit in 1967? However old he is, frankly I'd cringe myself inside out if anyone did an impromptu dance for me.

Exactly. I assume the OP is trolling because no one is going to call someone in their 60s young, even if they are young compared to the poster.

On the off chance the OP isn't trolling, it sounds like it's being done for their benefit rather than the friend having a birthday, who is unlikely to know what the #1 song is when he was born. If you must do a performance, pick something from his teens that he liked.

Mercedes45 · 26/01/2025 21:55

I've just listened to the song. Do the dance. Make sure the camera man gets up close reactions of all the guests. Then post the video to social media and you will get all the attention you need when you go viral for looking like a gobshite!

Lorelielee · 26/01/2025 21:56

I must be a bit sadistic because I would hate it to the point I would rip my own skin off in second hand embarrassment but I still want you to do it.

So it's a big YES from me.

solvendie · 26/01/2025 21:58

YABU - this is about you, not him

Getuptherenow · 26/01/2025 21:58

Please video it and get it online

Ocsober · 26/01/2025 21:59

You know what @TheEnterainer my initial reaction was ‘nooooo don’t do it this is massive cringe’.
Then I read your replies and you’re so lovely and down to earth. Then I listened to the song and realised it’s awesome.

I say go for it, even though I voted otherwise! I think this would be really cool given you’ve been friends for so very long :)

AmusedBouched · 26/01/2025 22:00

TheEnterainer · 26/01/2025 21:29

Thanks - I love it too ❤️

so I broke my dry January and am quite drunk so am unsure how valid my opinion is. No idea what song this is, but I think I LOVE you and want you to come to my birthday to sing and dance this surprise song!
I seem to be one of the few who voted YANBU. Bring it!

EnjoythemoneyJane · 26/01/2025 22:00

I went to a small gathering for a friend’s significant birthday. It was in a posh hotel bar in London. Prior to the evening, one of the guests had decided it would be ‘great fun’ for the attendees to write and perform a ‘this is your life’-type song as a gift for the birthday girl. He could not be dissuaded, even when the response from everyone else was distinctly lacklustre.

Inevitably, he wrote the whole thing himself, handed out printed lyrics on the night and was the only one belting it out with gusto and banging away on the piano, while everyone else semi-mumbled along looking at their shoes. It felt fucking endless - verse after verse of us all smiling desperately through this bilge, and the birthday girl trying to look delighted but and clearly horrified and wanting the ground to swallow her up. It was completely and utterly mortifying - I’m getting sphincter spasms now at the remembered embarrassment. The only person who loved it and thought it was great and kept on bringing it up for weeks afterwards was him - it was entirely about him and nothing to do with the host’s birthday.

I’m glad you’ve canned the idea, OP. I don’t know how your friend would feel about it but I’m a similar age to him with a birthday coming up and if any of my mates pulled a stunt like this I’d leave the bloody country.

UnderTheStairs51 · 26/01/2025 22:02

Well mine was Joe Dolce Shaddap You Face.

And I'll feel like that about what you plan to do.

crashbandicooty · 26/01/2025 22:05

Honestly, I would quite like this if it were my birthday! I would think it was funny and would be cheering along, and would be quite touched that my mates had done that for me. But I can see that I am very much in the minority!

Islandofmisadventure · 26/01/2025 22:06

As hard as you might try and even if your intentions are good, this would definitely come across as more about you trying to grab the limelight than celebrating this persons birthday. Utterly bizarre IMO. Just find a way to play the song if it holds a special place in his heart.
