We have a friend with a birthday in a few weeks.

The number one song when he was born was ‘Cinderella Rockafella.’

As you’ve possibly guessed - if this was his birthday number one - he’s still a young lad and might be a bit shy and self conscious when it comes ti things like showy displays ! 🙌

His birthday’s at the beginning of March.

What my partner and I would love to do is an impromptu dance to this song when we all visit the local social club in a few weeks to celebrate his birthday.

I’m busy learning the exact lyrics for this song already!

i personally LOVE this song although some people apparently find it a bit twee

SO -

YANBU - it’s a lovely, gesture and great to take initiative at a time when most people are busy scrolling their phones and CBA to make an effort for anyone or anything!

YABU - ‘Cinderella Rockafella’ is a novelty record sung by seasoned performers and the ‘Average Joes’ of this world can’t carry off such a performance without it looking extremely naff!

Oh God I just threw up in my mouth! 😂 I would die of embarrassment if you did this in front of me. Especially with such a naff novelty song!

I bet you did a naff dance at your wedding didn't you? Was it to Tragedy by Steps, or All you need is love by the Beatles! 😆

LillyPJ · 26/01/2025 22:13

Just don't! I'm struggling to think why you'd want to anyway. It just sounds embarrassing for everyone concerned.

Mirabai · 26/01/2025 22:13

I think it sounded like a brilliant idea, unforgettable, for all the wrong reasons. I’m disappointed OP has been dissuaded. 😆

Chariots77 · 26/01/2025 22:14

Of course on MN you're bound to be told not to do this. However in real life I think it'd be great. On my deathbed I'd like to look back at the little touching moments in life and things that made me laugh... I personally think this type of memory - friends putting the effort in to do something like this to make me smile - would definitely feature ❤

Mirabai · 26/01/2025 22:14

Lorelielee · 26/01/2025 21:56

I must be a bit sadistic because I would hate it to the point I would rip my own skin off in second hand embarrassment but I still want you to do it.

So it's a big YES from me.

Me too.

Hotafternoon · 26/01/2025 19:36

Frank Sinatra and Three Coins in a Fountain was no. 1 when I was born.

I am quite old. 😆

Ha!

Mine's 'Let's Have Another Party" by Winifred Atwell!!

I bet no-one knows that one!

burnerusernameumpteen · 26/01/2025 22:18

UnderTheStairs51 · 26/01/2025 22:02

Well mine was Joe Dolce Shaddap You Face.

And I'll feel like that about what you plan to do.

The travesty that kept Ultravox Vienna off the top spot.

Hotafternoon · 26/01/2025 22:22

Nanny0gg · 26/01/2025 22:17

Ha!

Mine's 'Let's Have Another Party" by Winifred Atwell!!

I bet no-one knows that one!

Oh my god, I remember seeing her on TV banging the piano. I'd have to Google the song to see if I remembered it. 😂

Playgroundincident · 26/01/2025 22:26

Absofucjkinlutely not.

mathanxiety · 26/01/2025 22:28

I've had to look up the song that was number one the day I was born. It was a massive global hit. But I had no clue it was in the charts even in the year I was born.

This plan of yours sounds so contrived and cringeworthy - it's clearly just a ploy to get everyone's attention on you.

Make him a nice scrapbook of the year or month or week he was born instead.

Birthdaycakewithwine · 26/01/2025 22:30

I mean this as nicely as possible but that would be a really weird thing to do and really cringe.
Just my opinion!
Obviously none of us on this thread know him so if you think he'd appreciate it then go ahead!

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 26/01/2025 22:31

Jesus, I'd hate this. And I'd hate to be the reason someone made a fool of themselves, which would add to the awful feeling. Just don't do it, nobody will be glad you went to the effort.

k1233 · 26/01/2025 22:38

Ear splitting caterwauling - why would you do that to someone you like? I could understand if you hated him but otherwise, that's a huge no from me.

Neveranynamesleft · 26/01/2025 22:42

The word anorak springs to mind....

Fraaances · 26/01/2025 22:56

I am now picturing someone wafting around, doing some Kate Bush-style interpetive dance to Bright Eyes right now @AffIt and giggling, trying not to wake up my DH. That bloody movie scarred me for life.

Vertigo2851 · 26/01/2025 22:57

I have had something similar done to me and it was awful. Are you trying to make a fool of him?

Velmy · 26/01/2025 23:00

I've cringed so hard at the thought of it that my face has turned inside out 😭

Joking aside, please don't do this OP. It will be awful and one of the younger guests will film it and put it on Instagram.

TaggieO · 26/01/2025 23:03

I am dying of second hand cringe even reading the idea. I would have to leave my own birthday party if this happened to me - I literally cannot think of anything worse as a “gift”.

Mirabai · 26/01/2025 23:07

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 26/01/2025 22:31

Jesus, I'd hate this. And I'd hate to be the reason someone made a fool of themselves, which would add to the awful feeling. Just don't do it, nobody will be glad you went to the effort.

Why? I can only imagine loving it. Schadenfreude and all.

damnitshotinhere · 26/01/2025 23:12

I would die of embarrassment if I was him.

I went to a restaurant once and a violinist came and played next to us. I literally wanted to cry.

You mention he's shy. Why would you put him through this?

You need to learn to read the room!

TwigletsAndRadishes · 26/01/2025 23:13

TheEnterainer · 26/01/2025 17:26

No neither of us are performer types.

We’d be doing it as something very ‘different’ that he might enjoy as its something not many people can be bothered to do

But do you think he'd even get the relevance? Most people haven't got a clue or couldn't give a stuff what song was No1 on the day they were born.

It's also a really terrible song and I'd die of embarrassment on the spot. I hate anything where I have to stand there with a rictus smile on my face because people are watching for my reaction. It's excrutiating.

Why have you said he's a young lad? Unless there is a different song with the same title or a cover version I am not aware of, this song is from the 60s.

TwigletsAndRadishes · 26/01/2025 23:15

And also, it won't be 'inpromptu' will it? It will be planned and staged.

samarrange · 26/01/2025 23:15

PinkArt · 26/01/2025 17:51

Mine was Another Brick In The Wall so the OP would need to drag some kids along from a London primary school to join in the fun

I can imagine the birthday dinner version now... "How can ye have any red velvet cake If ye don't eat your veal cordon bleu?"

samarrange · 26/01/2025 23:25

I'm going to bet that if OP's friend had been born on 7 October 1969, she and her partner might not have been considering recreating the ambiance of that week's number one in front of a bunch of people. (Or maybe they would, who knows? 😮)

I'm in my 30's and I've always loved the song but I cringe at the idea of someone doing something like you're suggesting. Unless it's something your friend is into which doesn't sound like the case as you've said he's shy/self conscious. I know it'd ruin the surprise but maybe ask him if it's something he'd like/enjoy/find a laugh beforehand?
