We have a friend with a birthday in a few weeks.

The number one song when he was born was ‘Cinderella Rockafella.’

As you’ve possibly guessed - if this was his birthday number one - he’s still a young lad and might be a bit shy and self conscious when it comes ti things like showy displays ! 🙌

His birthday’s at the beginning of March.

What my partner and I would love to do is an impromptu dance to this song when we all visit the local social club in a few weeks to celebrate his birthday.

I’m busy learning the exact lyrics for this song already!

i personally LOVE this song although some people apparently find it a bit twee

SO -

YANBU - it’s a lovely, gesture and great to take initiative at a time when most people are busy scrolling their phones and CBA to make an effort for anyone or anything!

YABU - ‘Cinderella Rockafella’ is a novelty record sung by seasoned performers and the ‘Average Joes’ of this world can’t carry off such a performance without it looking extremely naff!

I might add a lot of people in their that I know due to being close to that age 50s and their music of choice is 80s bands and 90s house/rave music. I think this song choice would completely miss the mark for a 57th birthday and seem really out of place. What about something from when it was his 18th birthday, when he was probably into music and you could start it off then get everyone up and dancing. I think the cinderella rockerfella choice could actually ruin the party, but its a nice idea with a better and more relevant song choice.

AmberGemstone · 26/01/2025 21:02

If somebody did this at my birthday party, I would literally turn on my heels and walk out. It’s such narcissistic behaviour.

Good job his birthday no 1 wasn’t Renee/Renato !!

Incidentally, Save Your Love was no. 1 when I was born (Christmas ‘82).

unless he’s dancing to it you are being ridiculous. If he were to dance with you the lyrics are pointless. Drop it now you muppet, show off another way.

BarbadosItsCloserThanYouThink · 26/01/2025 21:04

I’d be praying for the ground to open up to make it end!

I’ve just listened to the song and I take it back! Don’t do it, that song is SO bad.

No33 · 26/01/2025 21:07

Jesus Christ. Do not do this.

TunnocksOrDeath · 26/01/2025 21:08

TheEnterainer · 26/01/2025 17:26

No neither of us are performer types.

We’d be doing it as something very ‘different’ that he might enjoy as its something not many people can be bothered to do

There's a reason people don't do it, and it's not that they can't be bothered.

Crazybaby123 · 26/01/2025 21:10

What was number 1 on his 18th OP?

Fuckitydoodah · 26/01/2025 21:13

Sorry, but I'm in camp cringe. I'd want the ground to swallow me up.

Diana Ross ‘Chain Reaction’

@TheEnterainer it was an international hit in 1968 so it must be a really odd birthday to celebrate! he is going to be 57!!!

Embarrassed for you calling someone a muppet😔

ThoroughlyModernNotMillie · 26/01/2025 21:17

Unbelievably cringe-making. If any of my friends did this to me, even singing my favourite song in the whole world( btw nobody cares about the number 1 song when they were born), I would seriously reconsider my decades-long friendship with them, as they would show they had no understanding of me or my likes and dislikes whatsoever. Whoever you are, it's just so toe-curling to think that someone a bit shy would like such a display, it shows no understanding of him at all.

I’m howling at this. I’ve just googled the song as I've never heard of it. Even in the original version it sounds like cats. I can’t imagine a harder song to sing or dance to. How are you planning to dance?

I would pay good money to watch this. At least £70.

Diana Ross ‘Chain Reaction’

This could be a good one to get everyone up to dance and works well in a social club type place. You could announce it and say something funny like heres a little something we organised as we found out this was number 1 when you turned 18, so lets party like its 1986. Its a much more party type song and a song he would remember and everyone would know. The other song choice is too obscure and bonkers!

lifeonmars100 · 26/01/2025 21:20

I vaguely remember this and people took the piss out of it then all those years ago, what the decades and an amateur and unrequsted rendition could possibly add to something that was a novelty song is beyond me. I would bloody die if someone did that to me. Just out of interest would you be doing this if it the number one had been a rock and roll classic rather than a weird and all but forgotten duet?

NattyTurtle59 · 26/01/2025 21:20

I actually think it sounds like a great idea OP, but there really is no use us giving our opinions as you are the only one who knows whether or not he would appreciate the gesture. A lot of people I know would love to have you perform in their honour (but then the people I know are most definitely un-MN types, i.e. they like socialising and fun!)

I love the song btw.

WigglyVonWaggly · 26/01/2025 21:21

God almighty, please don’t.
