We have a friend with a birthday in a few weeks.

The number one song when he was born was ‘Cinderella Rockafella.’

As you’ve possibly guessed - if this was his birthday number one - he’s still a young lad and might be a bit shy and self conscious when it comes ti things like showy displays ! 🙌

His birthday’s at the beginning of March.

What my partner and I would love to do is an impromptu dance to this song when we all visit the local social club in a few weeks to celebrate his birthday.

I’m busy learning the exact lyrics for this song already!

i personally LOVE this song although some people apparently find it a bit twee

SO -

YANBU - it’s a lovely, gesture and great to take initiative at a time when most people are busy scrolling their phones and CBA to make an effort for anyone or anything!

YABU - ‘Cinderella Rockafella’ is a novelty record sung by seasoned performers and the ‘Average Joes’ of this world can’t carry off such a performance without it looking extremely naff!

I remember the song at the time, an absolute horrendous cheese fest, and not in a good way!
IMO its a huge my good god noooo, huge cringe and not even funny

Plenty of shite songs over the years got to number 1.
I don't even know if there's such a thing as a 'number 1 in the charts' anymore, but there are still plenty of shite new songs around too.

Going back to the 70s ..love me love my dog.
Me and the elephant never forgot you.
Don't know if they were no 1
But they were shite even by 70s standard's.

babyproblems · 26/01/2025 20:24

I would hate this so so so much. Please don’t do it!!!

fairycakes1234 · 26/01/2025 20:26

Please please don't, I beg you. You're gonna do it regardless aren't you🤣

Sallysoup · 26/01/2025 20:27

I'm glad you've seen sense!

I have no idea what song was no.1 when I was born, so singing and dancing it at me would leave me confused and wondering if you'd lost your marbles.

YarkYark · 26/01/2025 20:29

OP seems to be saying she won't do this because the song isn't popular. Come on, OP, won't you accept what nearly everyone has said, that its a terrible idea because you are making it about you, that's why the consensus is don't do it?

Dearg · 26/01/2025 20:29

I just looked up number 1 on my birthdate in 1961 - never heard of it. I would find it odd if someone sang it to me , as I would be unlikely to recognise it ( before now anyway).
It’s lovely that you want to make his birthday special, maybe buy a nice wine from his year? If it’s still drinkable 😂

AffIt · 26/01/2025 20:31

I was born in April 79 and the No 1 at the time was 'Bright Eyes' by Art Garfunkel.

Fuck me, can you imagine what a buzzkill it would be if somebody took it upon themselves to perform that at a birthday party?

There's no amount of booze that would rescue that. Happy birthday, won't somebody think of the dead rabbits?!

pinkroses79 · 26/01/2025 20:32

I didn't know this song and he might not either? He's only in his 50s still and is very unlikely to enjoy this kind of music surely? The number one when I was born was dire, one of the worst songs ever. If I wanted to hear music from way back at my birthday I would rather hear the hits from my teenage years.

Ah leave her alone, stop nit picking, she's not doing it now , end of

Twaddlepip · 26/01/2025 17:22

Why would you try to steal focus on his birthday though? Are you both ‘performer’ types?

This 😬

PheasantPluckers · 26/01/2025 20:36

I'd want to curl up in a ball and die, personally.

Gonners · 26/01/2025 20:36

I checked mine and got Hoagy Carmichael, of whom my partner - US born and some years older than me - said "Who?"

I am inclined to go against the majority here and say you should definitely do it, video it (including plenty of "audience reaction" shots) and put it up on the middle-aged social media platform of your choice. But only if you provide a link here.

bellabasset · 26/01/2025 20:37

We heard Chrys de Burgh sing Lady in Red at our local pub. I've always a litvif red and it became 'our song'. The streets of London was another song and the singer lived local to us so he sang it at parties in our house. I have rehomed a dog and as his name is Fred his song is hexine by Right said Fred. My husband lived Jumping Jack Flash and tried to copy Mick's action. He did it one night after we'd come out of a pub where the Stones were. Mick told him he hadnt got it right. My cousin was getting married in Richmond and hadn't arrived at tge registry office. The registrar left them till last and came in to say they had arrived having forgotten the Stones concert was on nearby. However we heard a lot of it as we sat outside the venue where the reception was held.

dapsnotplimsolls · 26/01/2025 20:37

Apologies if it's already been mentioned but I keep thinking about The Routine from Friends.

DoYouReally · 26/01/2025 17:23

While thoughtful in some ways;

He may embarrassed/uncomfortable.
He is unlikely to know ot was number one when he was born.
Most others won't either.
Some may perceive it as attention seeking and taking the spotlight off him.
It's not a great or well known song.

Gifts/Surprises should ne about the recipients not the givers. Unless you know he will love it, I wouldn't do it.

I think this is a great way to look at it.

JoanCollinsDiva · 26/01/2025 20:42

I love your chinny chin chin

LOL

Do it OP. Do it do it do it do it do it!!!

And then come back and tell us how it went, pleeeeeeease!!

LuluBlakey1 · 26/01/2025 20:43

You could do it dressed and in role as Bryn and Nessa - that might be funny.

Travelodge · 26/01/2025 20:45

TheEnterainer · 26/01/2025 17:26

No neither of us are performer types.

We’d be doing it as something very ‘different’ that he might enjoy as its something not many people can be bothered to do

But it’s not a song that will actually hold any meaning for him, surely. He may well never have heard of it. It’s a novelty love song, all about the performers.

Sorry but it sounds as if you’re seizing a feeble excuse to draw the spotlight onto you.

ShelleyCarpenter · 26/01/2025 20:55

NooNakedJacuzziness · 26/01/2025 17:28

Is that the one that's goes "I'm the lady, the ladyhooooo"?

Yes! I was just singing “Oooo-ooo-oooh I love you!” to myself.

Don’t do it, OP.

SophiePie · 26/01/2025 20:55

PanettoneSoprano · 26/01/2025 20:12

Has anyone else just googled which song was no1 when they were born? 😂

Anyway... no, don't do it OP.

Yep. "Do the Bartman" by The Simpsons apparently...

Stravaig · 26/01/2025 20:57

OP, why don't you and your partner get married/renew your vows and make this your newlywed performance dance? The cringe factor may still be there, but at least you'll be making it all about your on your celebration day.

StrawberryDream24 · 26/01/2025 20:57

CharityShopChic · 26/01/2025 17:30

Wow.

Inertia · 26/01/2025 20:58

Mortifying for everyone in the room.

Also not impromptu if you’re planning it now .

HotAsSatansBalls · 26/01/2025 21:01

BellaCiaoBellaCiao · 26/01/2025 18:39

this should be in Classics 😂

I fear that’s what the OP is aiming for …
