We have a friend with a birthday in a few weeks.

The number one song when he was born was ‘Cinderella Rockafella.’

As you’ve possibly guessed - if this was his birthday number one - he’s still a young lad and might be a bit shy and self conscious when it comes ti things like showy displays ! 🙌

His birthday’s at the beginning of March.

What my partner and I would love to do is an impromptu dance to this song when we all visit the local social club in a few weeks to celebrate his birthday.

I’m busy learning the exact lyrics for this song already!

i personally LOVE this song although some people apparently find it a bit twee

SO -

YANBU - it’s a lovely, gesture and great to take initiative at a time when most people are busy scrolling their phones and CBA to make an effort for anyone or anything!

YABU - ‘Cinderella Rockafella’ is a novelty record sung by seasoned performers and the ‘Average Joes’ of this world can’t carry off such a performance without it looking extremely naff!

No neither of us are performer types.

We’d be doing it as something very ‘different’ that he might enjoy as its something not many people can be bothered to do

It’s not that not many people ‘can be bothered’ to do it. It’s that it’s a terrible idea and most people would know that.

needhelpwiththisplease · 26/01/2025 19:45

Every single person in that room would be dying of embarrassment for you and the birthday boy.
It will go down as the night someone tried to steal the limelight off someone else's birthday

OldTinHat · 26/01/2025 19:46

No.

Just NO!

There's a bloke in my social group who takes every opportunity to 'perform' and we just cringe, sidle out, pretend we don't know him.

It's mortifying.

Why don't you just buy him a copy of a newspaper published on the day of his birth instead? That would be more interesting and personal. It's his birthday, after all, not your opportunity to make it all about you. Leave the poor guy to enjoy his buffet and pint in peace, please!

Grapewrath · 26/01/2025 19:46

Please don’t don’t do this
im not shy but I’d die of second hand embarrassment

Christmassoxs · 26/01/2025 19:46

The Chicken Song, god it just got worse

Jojimoji · 26/01/2025 19:47

I'm gonna be 57 at the start of March and until this thread I had absolutely no idea that this song was number one when I was born.

Now I can't stop wondering if I'm also gonna be lucky enough to have a friend warble it at me on my birthday.

You've raised my expectations OP.

If nobody serenades me or even yodels me " you're a lady hooo" I'm gonna be disappointed and my birthday will be ruined.

Iwanttoliveonamountain · 26/01/2025 19:47

When is your next big birthday? That is the time for you to do the dance.

Christmassoxs · 26/01/2025 19:51

Chicken Song, Cinderella Rockerfella, Tip Toe thru the Tulips, Agadoo and Get Ready To Rumble.
That would aural torture to be suck in a lift with those songs on muzak repeat. Just 1 hour and I would be homicidal by the time I was rescued. 😡

Many people don't do it because it's crap, cringy and hideous.

If you really want to perform, then save it for your birthday, and do the song that was number one the day you were born.

CaptainMyCaptain · 26/01/2025 19:55

TheNewSchmoo · 26/01/2025 17:18

It sounds horrible

I agree I'm afraid. It was always an awful song anyway.

Knittedfairies2 · 26/01/2025 19:57

No. No. No. He is unlikely to know what the number 1 song was on the day he was born, so your idea will seem extraordinarily random.

jollygreenpea · 26/01/2025 20:01

I've just sat through the song, there doesn't appear to be any dance moves?

Disneyrunner · 26/01/2025 20:05

57 is definitely not a young lad - my parents in their early 60s just became great grandparents 🤣
Seriously tho this sounds like something you would enjoy but he probably won't. Let him be the centre of attention at his own party!

Way to make the birthday about you, I'd be mortified

PanettoneSoprano · 26/01/2025 20:12

Has anyone else just googled which song was no1 when they were born? 😂

Anyway... no, don't do it OP.

Youngheartsalittletogetherness · 26/01/2025 20:14

LuluBlakey1 · 26/01/2025 20:07

Nooo!

I remember it from when I was a kid, heard it on the radio.seeing it being performed is a whole new level of wtaf 🙇

whynotwhatknot · 26/01/2025 20:16

my husband is the same age-just no please dont

Youngheartsalittletogetherness · 26/01/2025 20:16

Nancy ames..I don't want to talk about it
Was a big record on Nsoul scene at one time.

Fraaances · 26/01/2025 20:18

My no 1 song was Puppy Love by Donny Osmond. Barf. Honestly, I’d throw up on the table. We have a friend who is lovely but has ASD and literally can’t read the room. He will bring out a guitar at an inappropriate moment and “serenade” everyone with some bleh song he loves and no one else has heard of. A million points for enthusiasm, but it’s awfully cringey. (And he has an awful voice as well.) His wife is constantly saying “Oh God, please stop!” After the last time, I said to my DH “At least he’s not into dancing too!”

gotmyknickersinatwist · 26/01/2025 20:18

TheEnterainer · 26/01/2025 18:49

What surprises me greatly is that this sing ever got to no1 if SO many people dislike it

I personally love it

But - I’ve read the room - I won’t do it

Plenty of shite songs over the years got to number 1.
I don't even know if there's such a thing as a 'number 1 in the charts' anymore, but there are still plenty of shite new songs around too.

Crazybaby123 · 26/01/2025 20:19

Errm, i know this song as we had to do a dance to it at my dance show when I was about 7. I personally hate it. This is a really weird thing to do at a birthday. Unless, he might be the type of person who loves odd weird twee things, which is fine if he is but if you don't think he is or don't know that he is then DO NOT do this.

TheNewSchmoo · 26/01/2025 20:19

StMarie4me · 26/01/2025 19:22

I was born in 1962 and am currently... 62. How are people deciding he is 66?!

Not that 56 is a young lad!

Because I was so appalled by the idea, I temporarily forgot how to add.
