We have a friend with a birthday in a few weeks.

The number one song when he was born was ‘Cinderella Rockafella.’

As you’ve possibly guessed - if this was his birthday number one - he’s still a young lad and might be a bit shy and self conscious when it comes ti things like showy displays ! 🙌

His birthday’s at the beginning of March.

What my partner and I would love to do is an impromptu dance to this song when we all visit the local social club in a few weeks to celebrate his birthday.

I’m busy learning the exact lyrics for this song already!

i personally LOVE this song although some people apparently find it a bit twee

SO -

YANBU - it’s a lovely, gesture and great to take initiative at a time when most people are busy scrolling their phones and CBA to make an effort for anyone or anything!

YABU - ‘Cinderella Rockafella’ is a novelty record sung by seasoned performers and the ‘Average Joes’ of this world can’t carry off such a performance without it looking extremely naff!

Oh gosh no! Please don’t make a fool of the birthday boy or yourself!

terracelane23 · 26/01/2025 18:33

It sounds like something you'd like, not him. Could you have a party for your birthday and do it then? His birthday is about what he wants, not about what you want.

Yellowbananasarebetterthangreen · 26/01/2025 18:33

It IS a well known 60s song. I know it. But I wouldnt want you to do what you've suggested. To that song or any song. Cringe Alert.

You really aren’t young at heart if this is your chosen song. I’m a couple of years older, I am trying to imagine having a party and some friends signing Dusty Springfield You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me at it. It’s quite ridiculous.

These songs remind me of my mum, who would have enjoyed them when I was a baby. Surely your friend would appreciate some 80s music IN THE BACKGROUND over your little “turn”.

At 57, I'd say he might even like some current music, though I can't help wondering if OP would be shocked at the thought.

brunettemic · 26/01/2025 18:34

You sound awful.
Plus, yet another post where OP just disagrees with everyone, what’s the point.

LaPalmaLlama · 26/01/2025 18:36

Honestly if I was out with mates for my birthday and had had a few drinks, I would find it funny if they sang my “birthday number one” providing it was the right sort of venue ( so not during afternoon tea at Claridges 🤣). I’d be quite touched by the effort.

RawBloomers · 26/01/2025 18:36

You talk about him being young at heart but when you first said he was young you put it in the context of him being shy and not liking showiness. So while it might go down well and cause your friend and anyone celebrating a lot of laughter and fun (I have several friends of around that age who would find it hysterical and love it), given the way you have talked about the birthday boy, I think chances are pretty low.

Chasingaces · 26/01/2025 18:37

Just no, poor boy would want floor to open up

NooNakedJacuzziness · 26/01/2025 18:37

Let's all learn it and organise a MN flash mob of Cinderella Rockefeller's for the poor sod!!

WhenTheyComeForYou · 26/01/2025 18:37

It would scream “me, me, me” to me. I’d be cringing and wondering why you needed to steal the limelight.

AntigoneFunn · 26/01/2025 18:37

Song that was #1 when I was born was Bridge over troubled water. What an absolute dirge. So no thanks.

Cinderella Rockefeller is even worse in my opinion.

If you want to do something like this you need to find a song that is meaningful to the birthday boy. Then you ask him if he is open to being "danceraded" to his favourite song and only then do you knock yourself out.

Hopefully the DJ will be Ray Von, because this is giving me major Phoenix Nights vibes. Shabba!

Nerdynerdynerd · 26/01/2025 18:38

It would make me want to claw a hole through the floor with my bare hands and crawl into the hole to wait until it's all over... make of that what you want

BellaCiaoBellaCiao · 26/01/2025 18:39

this should be in Classics 😂

Wheresthebeach · 26/01/2025 18:39

For all that's Holy...no.

TheEnterainer · 26/01/2025 17:26

No neither of us are performer types.

We’d be doing it as something very ‘different’ that he might enjoy as its something not many people can be bothered to do

It’s not that people can’t be bothered. People don’t do this shit because it is cringeworthy and embarrassing. Unless you want the birthday boy to die of embarrassment (for you and him) do not do this.

Iamoldandwearpurple · 26/01/2025 18:40

Good God do not do that!!!!!

It is HIS birthday. He should be the centre of attention not you.

Buy him a card and something meaningful to him.

Don't embarrassed yourselves or someone who you describe as a friend.

AlpacaMittens · 26/01/2025 18:41

CRINGE

Not just the song, the whole scenario is absolutely cringe

burnerusernameumpteen · 26/01/2025 18:42

This thread has led me down so many rabbit holes. I always thought that Renee and Renato were a real couple, but apparently not. Renato was genuine enough but "Renee" was a session singer called Hilary.

The first time I heard of the No 1 when you were born being like a horoscope was on Annie Nightingale's (RIP) Sunday show after the Top 40 in the 80s. In my case it turned out to be prescient but that's a whole other thread.

And as for being serenaded on Mediterranean holidays, I'm British and polite and so would suck it up whilst wishing the ground could swallow me whole.

This made me laugh out loud, you are 100% correct!

RedRosesParmaViolets · 26/01/2025 18:43

🤣❤️

PurpleChrayn · 26/01/2025 18:43

You mustn't.

HonoraBridge · 26/01/2025 18:43

Don’t do it! 😰

10/10 troll thread

LBFseBrom · 26/01/2025 18:47

He's not a young chap, he's well in his fifties. That song came out in 1967.

It's an awful idea.
