We have a friend with a birthday in a few weeks.

The number one song when he was born was ‘Cinderella Rockafella.’

As you’ve possibly guessed - if this was his birthday number one - he’s still a young lad and might be a bit shy and self conscious when it comes ti things like showy displays ! 🙌

His birthday’s at the beginning of March.

What my partner and I would love to do is an impromptu dance to this song when we all visit the local social club in a few weeks to celebrate his birthday.

I’m busy learning the exact lyrics for this song already!

i personally LOVE this song although some people apparently find it a bit twee

SO -

YANBU - it’s a lovely, gesture and great to take initiative at a time when most people are busy scrolling their phones and CBA to make an effort for anyone or anything!

YABU - ‘Cinderella Rockafella’ is a novelty record sung by seasoned performers and the ‘Average Joes’ of this world can’t carry off such a performance without it looking extremely naff!

It is probably the worst birthday idea I’ve heard. It’s excruciatingly embarrassing it’s an absolutely awful song and someone else’s birthday party is not all about you and your dancing skills.

Trouble is, OP hasn't even said it's a party! 🤣

AmazingBouncingFerret · 26/01/2025 18:02

OP did you post around 20 years ago about letting your child take a super soaker to a birthday party? Because I’m getting the same vibes…

I remember that thread 😂

TwentySecondsLeft · 26/01/2025 18:26

@TheEnterainer

I absolutely love anything that is cringe, weird or inappropriate. Please do this. The world is too full of boring people who take offence at everything. Perhaps save it to nearer the end after a few drinks.

RunningJo · 26/01/2025 18:27

I’m sure you mean well…. But this whole idea makes me cringe (sorry)

Unless you 100% know your friend would find this entertaining and love the idea then absolutely don’t do it.
I think most guests, including your friend might wonder what on earth you’re doing.

Sorry Op, I think you need to find another idea that you know your friend would enjoy / like rather than something like this.

MumblesParty · 26/01/2025 18:27

If you all knew it was number 1 when he was born, and you’d all joked about it in the past, and sung it at karaoke nights over the years etc, then your idea would still be a bit cringey, but it would at least have context.

I’m 57 and I’ve just googled what was number 1 when I was born - it’s a song I’ve never heard of by a band I’ve never heard of, so if someone sang that at my birthday party this year I’d have no idea what the point of it was.

So no OP, don’t do it.

TheEnterainer · 26/01/2025 17:26

No neither of us are performer types.

We’d be doing it as something very ‘different’ that he might enjoy as its something not many people can be bothered to do

There's a reason for that.

Negroany · 26/01/2025 18:28

Your options are weird, you are being very unreasonable to think these are the two positions.

Would he know what you were doing and why? If someone randomly started singing the song that was No1 when I was born I would have no idea why the were doing it.

How about you just sing happy birthday and maybe bring a cake?

ColinOfficeTrolley · 26/01/2025 18:28

This made my vagina recoil OP. You know that feeling when something is so so wrong and it makes your fanny go funny. Well this.

Redflagsabounded · 26/01/2025 18:28

I was born within a couple of years of that and oh god I'd die of cringe for you. And I'm someone who does lots of dressing up/performing/daft stuff. It's such a shit song for a start...

SchrodingersTwat2 · 26/01/2025 18:28

Do you describe yourself as "a bit of a character", by any chance? (Shorthand for thoughtless, look at me twat).

I'm embarrassed on your behalf.

Ihopeithinkiknow · 26/01/2025 18:29

@Knockgour I have no words to describe how I feel just imagining that grief dance never mind seeing it in person in the same room as the coffin and all the mourners lol.
I wish I had read this in 2022 though in the run up to my 22 year old sons funeral because he would have loved for someone (preferably me) making everyone feel really uncomfortable in what is supposed to be tragic circumstances haha he 100% would have requested I do something like this but there would be no doubt it was a piss take to all of his mates because they knew what he was like lol

This cannot be a serious thread.

of course it isn’t, not meant to be ! just enjoy the barking absurdity,
it isn’t often we have anyone playful posting on here (on a Sunday!)

Andoutcomethewolves · 26/01/2025 18:30

@Knockgour they did a solo grief dance??? Nooooo! Just why? 😱

Silvers11 · 26/01/2025 18:31

😂😂😂 Thanks for the laugh OP. Boring Sunday afternoon?

HollyKnight · 26/01/2025 18:31

I looked mine up. It's Crying by Don McLean. Which was also my mum's post-divorce drunk-on-vodka karaoke song! I'll be traumatised if my friends ever serenade me with that on my birthday. 😭😂

TheEnterainer · 26/01/2025 18:31

ThewrathofBethDutton · 26/01/2025 18:24

You’re going to do it aren’t you OP?

You so are going to do it…..

Not gonna lie, I would make an excuse to go to the loo the second you started these shenanigans and I would actually leave the venue, leave you to it.

No actually.., opinion is so unanimously against I think I’m going to change my mind - I will ‘read the room’

I’m a but surprised by a few things - I thought this was a very well known 60s song that everyone knew - evidently not!

I’ve always liked this song but I feel in the minority!

Really appreciate everyone’s opinions though

Good job his birthday no 1 wasn’t Renee/Renato !!

Yellowbananasarebetterthangreen · 26/01/2025 18:31

So hes going to be 56? Im 50 and definitely young looking and young at heart but Im for sure not "young" and neither is he.
It sounds like a completely cringe worthy experience op. You'll be making his birthday all about you and your dance. Dont do it. Do something similar for your birthday or wedding anniversary instead. Dont make someone elses day about you.

AntigoneFunn · 26/01/2025 18:32

I take it you’re not the kind of person who likes being serenaded at the dinner table by the resident hotel musician when on a Mediterranean holiday ?

Correct

Aintgointogoa · 26/01/2025 18:32

Nope from me. You're making it all about you ! It's also a ghastly song and I would not allow it within barge poling distance of my many birthdays whether it had been "no 1" fans self - sarcastically or not !
And I'm with @TheNewSchmootoo.

An impromptu dance, you say?

This made me absolutely howl.

"Aaaand - CUE MUSIC!"

please be assured that most people don’t perform dances to novelty 60s hits because it’s naff. Not because they can’t be bothered.

SnarkSideOfLife · 26/01/2025 18:33

Sounds awful.

SnoopysHoose · 26/01/2025 18:33

@SchrodingersTwat2
Or quirky 🙄
