To think bums should be covered in a public pool?

I may be being unreasonable and I’m just old and out of touch… took my kids swimming today at our local public pool and there was a lady wearing one of those swimming costumes that is basically a thong at the back? I saw lots of them in the beach during the summer which I kind of understand as it helps you get a very high cut tan/eliminates tan lines but I felt a bit weird seeing one in an indoor pool? Not sure where boundaries lie…? Happy to be told IABU but wondered what others think?

@Yogaatsunrise

You state "It looks ugly and unsightly and people are cringing for you."

That is just your personal opinion and a negative and judgmental one at that.

Women are allowed to choose what they wear. Other women who don't like this need to understand that unless they want a dress code policy enforced on them in life they need to practice tolerance.

If the swimming pool rules allow it, it is allowed.

If you don't like it, don't look. Your head and neck move.

The same for gym leggings, yoga pants, hijab and breastfeeding.

sometimesmovingforwards · 26/01/2025 17:56

Interesting thread.
I guess what’s clear is that women absolutely hate men having an opinion on what women wear.
But women also love having a big opinion on what other women wear.

ISpyNoPlumPie · 26/01/2025 17:56

Some people are clearly so ashamed of their own bodies that they feel shame by proxy. The level of judgement about other women’s bodies on here is so fucking regressive. You don’t have to wear them if you don’t like them. The nasty (and just plain dumb) comments are awful but unsurprising.

I’m always in leggings so I’m always in thongs. I have a Brazilian bottom swimsuit, I’d probably only wear it to a beach/holiday pool or spa though. I think it’s more comfortable, I like how it looks, and I’m not ashamed of my body. Horses for courses. There are plenty of clothing items I wouldn’t wear but others do. I’m not judging other people on their appearance (however, I’m judging a lot of people on this thread for their lousy attitudes).

Depends on the bum, I suppose…

No it doesn't, i don't want to see any ones arse

shuggles · 26/01/2025 17:57

@Dontlletmedownbruce And butt cheeks are OK now but only for women, a tiny string covering the middle part. Why cant men do this too?

Because seeing a man's hairy arse is absolutely disgusting and I do not believe for a second that you actually want what you are asking for.

usernother · 26/01/2025 17:58

It's bad enough seeing arses galore on holiday without them here as well.

Astrabees · 26/01/2025 17:58

It is lovely that in Iceland you can have the pleasure of a swim in unchlorinated pools. Everyone has to have a naked shower before they put their swimsuit on and there are diagrams to tell you which bits to pay attention to. Sensible swimwear all round too.

dutysuite · 26/01/2025 17:58

Don’t like it either- unhygienic for a start, but so many people think they have the arse to wear them when they really don’t.

ItGhoul · 26/01/2025 18:00

i honestly couldn’t give a toss about this. It’s only bum cheeks. It’s not like they’ve got their minge on display. It wouldn’t bother me if it was a bloke either.

Jacopo · 26/01/2025 18:02

They do literally look like the back end of a horse. That's what they always remind me of.

ByGiddyQuail · 26/01/2025 18:05

There was someone like this at our pool during the family swim a couple of weeks ago. She wasn't particularly impressed when my 4yr old pointed at her and laughed shouting that her pants were up her bum. Causing much much laughter from everyone else. I'd like to say I was embarrassed, but to be fair if she's daft enough to wear something like that to a swim aimed at young children (have to have an under 5 in the group to be able to attend the session) then she can deal with the goggles from said little ones.

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 26/01/2025 18:06

shuggles · 26/01/2025 17:54

@MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel Arses, boob, side boob, under boob, and penis bulges should be covered.

How do you cover a penis bulge? A penis bulge, by definition, is covered. If it wasn't covered, then it would just be a penis.

Complaining about normal body parts showing through clothing is ridiculous. Should people be offended that your boobs show through clothing?

A nice baggy pair of swimming shorts will do the job just fine.

Go peruse the sports direct website, you'll see that they have been purchasable by men for quite a number of years.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 26/01/2025 18:07

I agree OP. I see them now and then at my David Lloyd pool. OK, people are entitled to wear them, but I always think they’re exhibitionists. I can’t for a moment imagine that they’re more comfortable than any standard swimsuit or bikini.

Thehop · 26/01/2025 18:07

It looks bloody awful even on beautiful people

Mumof2girls2121 · 26/01/2025 18:07

Maybe she couldn’t find her appropriate costume and her kid desperately wanted to swim she had no choice

So where do you draw your line? Are you comfortable with adults being fully naked in public? Bearing in mind that indecent exposure is currently a criminal offence (and with good cause in my opinion- don't forget that Wayne Couzens had a history of indecent exposure).

I feel quite strongly that other people's decisions about what parts of their body they do/don't choose to reveal isn't just their business.

Noranydroptodrink · 26/01/2025 18:10

I don't really care about seeing butt cheeks, but the flossing aspect really puts me off them. When I see someone in that type of swimsuit all I see is someone voluntarily walking around with a bit of string rubbing up and down against their arsehole, and the thought is just yuk... a mixture of it seeming really unhygienic (even if someone's arsehole starts off clean at the start of the day, it won't necessarily stay that way) and thinking it would be a horrible feeling. Either way it's nothing to do with appearance, but when I see them I cringe.

PretendToBeToastWithMe · 26/01/2025 18:11

@Havanananana that sounds perfectly hygienic to me — unfortunately totally different to my experience of spas in the UK

Tooty78 · 26/01/2025 18:11

MatildaTheCat · 26/01/2025 16:31

I belong to a club with a nice spa and trust me they are commonplace and I agree they are not suitable for a family club (albeit the spa area is adults only but a vast range of people).

However I have to accept that I’m probably just being a prude and should accept my role as a very elderly extra on Love Island 😆

We went to a popular spa last year, in the hamam there was a couple and the girl had a bikini thong on. It ramped up as her and her bloke were in the experience shower and were indulging in a a VERY pda (hands on her bare bum.) The shower is in the middle of the room, so everyone had a ringside seat, and didn't know where to look!!! I was worried the bloke would have his own 'experience '

Another bloke was filming on his phone in the hamam which struck me as very intrusive and creepy.

I did complain to the front desk, and asked why are phones allowed in the spa?

Why on why can't people behave in a considerate way?

TheWonderhorse · 26/01/2025 18:12

I always really struggle to stop thinking about how many ballbags and arseholes I'm essentially bathing with. I don't care if someone's arse is out, it's all the genitals having a wash in the water that gets me 🤣🤣

user1471538275 · 26/01/2025 18:13

@shuggles It is often women that police other women.

So religious morality police in Iran include women to police women's clothing.
Female genital mutilation is carried out by women.

You see here on mumsnet women policing other women's choices and decisions, opinions all the time.

Luckily women are not a homogenous group so there are plenty of other women that fight back against this.

That's a bit of a fucking leap, isn't it? From a thing bikini to murderer. Who knew swimwear was a gateway to rampant criminality!?

Give your head a wobble.

I depends on the situation doesn’t it? So the line is whatever is permissible by law in the given situation. In a swimming context, a bottom is probably acceptable to most (I note some posters saying thongs are banned in their local pool). At a nudist beach any part of the body is acceptable. On the street, at work, well there are different rules. I don’t make the rules, but within the confines of the rules I’m not prepared to make judgments about other people’s bodies and their clothing choices. It’s so nasty and unnecessary. Some of the comments on here…horrible

WC is completely irrelevant. I don’t know when you’ve invoked his horrific spectre. He committed a crime, well numerous crimes.

I have unfortunately copped an unexpected eyeful of undercarriage due to a thong bikini with an inadequate gusset and an unfortunately positioned sunbed.

People saying normal pants are uncomfortable round the legs, are you buying the right size? It’s not easy to believe that a string rubbing between your buttocks all day is less uncomfortable than the non restrictive leg holes of a high leg short style.

user1471538275 · 26/01/2025 18:16

@Noranydroptodrink The anal sphincter generally does a good job at keeping everything inside until relaxed at an individual's will.

Unless you believe most people in a public swimming pool are faecally incontinent.

So someone who has accquired toilet training and reasonable personal hygeine skills shouldn't have anything to fear from some fabric.
