To think bums should be covered in a public pool?

I may be being unreasonable and I’m just old and out of touch… took my kids swimming today at our local public pool and there was a lady wearing one of those swimming costumes that is basically a thong at the back? I saw lots of them in the beach during the summer which I kind of understand as it helps you get a very high cut tan/eliminates tan lines but I felt a bit weird seeing one in an indoor pool? Not sure where boundaries lie…? Happy to be told IABU but wondered what others think?

Late to the party but absolutely agree. I went swimming at the weekend with family and there was a woman in a thong bikini swimming with her two young children. She had a great body and obviously worked out but having her arse hanging out did her absolutely no favours. She had a very long performative shower as well by the side of the pool - obviously wanting attention from the ogling lifeguard and various men bobbing around in the pool. The children I was with thought it was hilarious that they could see her bum.

Mielikki · 07/02/2025 16:03

Is it even possible to swim properly in them? Almost everyone I see at the pool is now wearing kneeskins - once you've tried them you'll never go back. It's only the older ladies who are still in conventional high cut swimming costumes. Don't think I've ever seen a bikini, let alone one of the thong ones.

What exactly in a performative shower? Good to see internalised misogyny alive and well on MN where things automatically equals utter slut flaunting herself in front of the lifeguard. Maybe she was simply just taking a fucking shower and doesn't need the judgement of the weirdo timing her from the sidelines?

I've seen a man have a performative shower by the pool after he'd come out of the sauna. He stood there for ages slowly rubbing his torso, pulled his trunks open at the front and back, kept doing full 360s etc. He wasn't washing to get back in the pool, he went to the changing room immediately after.

And yes I did watch him, because I found his behaviour fascinating, and the women in the jacuzzi with me commented on the floor show. So job done for him.

I can’t work out if this is disturbing or hilarious

Like topless, they are OK on a beach, (and I still think thong pants look crude, even on a beach) definitely not in a swimming pool.

To me, it smacks of desperation to be noticed.

MugsyBalonz · 07/02/2025 19:43

No doubt the people here slut-shaming and body-shaming will be the same people spouting off about "wear what you want" and "dress for you" and "want a beach body? Go to the beach and put your body on it", but only if it's an outfit that meets your approval and isn't performative, eh? Hmm

Juliagreeneyes · 07/02/2025 20:39

Oh come off it with the fake outrage - nobody who wears a swimsuit with a thong showing their bum is doing it “non-performatively”. The entire point is so that people can see your bum cheeks. The point of the thing is so that people can see areas of your body that are heavily sexualised and usually covered. The point is to look sexualised and to be titillating. Of course it’s performative!

Acting out sexist objectification is not body positivity. Next thing you’ll be suggesting that pole dancing or porny twerking is just for simple exercise and how could anyone possibly suggest that it might be “performative”?

Performative in that on a packed Sunday afternoon family swim she took 20 mins to shower herself and her two kids, full condition and hair brush, endless bending over and bum rubbing. And yes, I did time it because I was cold and wanting to get out of the pool. Hardly a weirdo not wanting kids between the ages of 8-15 watching her endlessly bending over rubbing her butt. Maybe she was the weirdo wanting to rub her arse in front children?

Exactly this, but the female version in a thong bikini

Loveumagenta · 08/02/2025 13:43

Not so long ago took kids swimming at local pool and woman with her baby and Partner bobbing about and the woman was practically naked. Think triangles over her fake tits and thong bottoms, absolutely minging and my teen boy was mortified. she spent the whole time drying not to fall out of the top and was loud and screechy about it too… bloody annoying.

Nope - a beach is one thing but a public pool another thing entirely.

Do you think we don't like them because we are jealous?

Jealous of women who display their naked bum in public😅

Please don't stick up for this trend. The vast majority of women think thong bikinis are disgusting.

MugsyBalonz · 17/02/2025 13:54

You don't speak for the vast majority of women, you speak for yourself and that's it just as everyone else's speaks for their own self. No one appointed you spokeswoman.

Preciousmoments18 · 17/02/2025 15:45

@MugsyBalonz I think 83% represents the vast majority. I'm sure they're not all prudes or old fogies either. They are simply women who have no desire to display their bare bottoms in public or to witness them, especially in front of young children.

MugsyBalonz · 17/02/2025 15:47

Mumsnet is not "the vast majority of women" and is not a representative sample of the general population either nationally or globally.

Sounds like an exhibitionist with no shame.

LivesinLondon2000 · 17/02/2025 19:21

@MugsyBalonz
Agree but it might possibly be representative of mums’ opinions - and 83% of them is still a lot of people - though yes of course far less than 83% of the entire female population & certainly not total population (especially as we can maybe assume close to 100% of men might well be in favour 😂)

onwardsup4 · 18/02/2025 14:09

@LivesinLondon2000 not sure about the 100% of men tbh. Yes many will take a side glance as is human nature but I think many will also find it uncomfortable when with children/partner. And yea who cares what the menz think anyway blah blah but it's not a societal norm to go around with your whole arse on display or wish to see it and I don't know why anyone would be insisting it is or trying to make it so

Actually I did ask some of my male friends who are Dads and none of them are happy for their teenage daughters to wear thong bikinis at all - even on a beach! And they all thought it was bit much for anyone to be wearing them at a public swimming pool. They’re quite a conservative lot though so prob not representative of all men but it was still interesting to hear.

When I see teenage girls & older on a beach wearing thong bikinis in front of their fathers I've often thought are they not embarrassed to be exposing their boobs & bum in front of them. A proper bikini or a swimsuit would be less embarrassing for fathers having to deal with the side glances.

On a recent holiday to Mexico DD18 was wearing not a thong exactly but there was a LOT of flesh on display. DH was pretty oblivious but DS 15 was mortified

Oh and I had to shush my son from saying “butt cheeks” repeatedly.

Bless him ha ha!

No ifs and definitely no Butts!
