To think bums should be covered in a public pool?

I may be being unreasonable and I’m just old and out of touch… took my kids swimming today at our local public pool and there was a lady wearing one of those swimming costumes that is basically a thong at the back? I saw lots of them in the beach during the summer which I kind of understand as it helps you get a very high cut tan/eliminates tan lines but I felt a bit weird seeing one in an indoor pool? Not sure where boundaries lie…? Happy to be told IABU but wondered what others think?

I don't understand what the issue is. If it was a hairy man's arse then I understand why there would be disgust, but women's arses don't cause any disgust or offence.

The thing that annoys me about this debate is that there is a strange narrative circulating that it's men who are telling women to cover up in pools and at the beach. In reality, men do not care about women's choice of swimwear. From this thread, it's quite clear that the objection is mostly coming from women- for reasons that are a mystery to everyone else.

stampin · 26/01/2025 17:33

So men have thong swimwear too, do they ever wear them to indoor pools?

I don't swim, so I don't know.

They are not more comfortable. They are worn by exhibitionists. It is a modern thing; people just seem to love attention. They probably think it’s empowering or something. Leave them to it I guess.

Thanks for telling everyone what is more comfortable for them. 🙄

Some of you are showing that you clearly don't wash your arse properly.
Grim.

Edited

With the best will in the world anyone with material up their bum all day when they remove it there will be a degree of stink especially if they've been to the toilet outside with no facilities to have a proper wash. You can carry wet wipes but they can't be flushed. I'll never understand the desire to wear this style of swimwear or underwear.🤢

LivesinLondon2000 · 26/01/2025 17:36

I don’t like them either mainly because last time I was at our nearest pool I saw all the teenage boys at the pool having fun, going on the water slides, jumping in etc and all the teenage girls terrified to do anything because their tiny bikinis might show more than they intended. A couple did brave the waterslide but were so tense holding on to their bikinis the whole way down.
Just sad really - they’re fine for posing at the beach if that’s what you’re into and obviously great for avoiding tan lines but it’s a bit like trying to play football in a miniskirt and heels - yes maybe your legs might look better and you might get some admiring glances but it’s a bit pointless really

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 26/01/2025 17:37

Ah so basically just a thong. I was imagining actual holes where the buttocks poked out lol

Hmmm is very Instagram isn’t it. If there was a super attractive girl wearing the kind of swimwear that barely covered her body I think I’d assume she was there to show off and maybe get more SM followers. I don’t think you’d be there to pound up and down doing lengths.

I don't swim, so I don't know.

I've never seen a man in a thong at a public swimming pool. On the beach in Spain last summer I saw a couple of older men wearing them (Peter Stringfellow kinda guys), but I don't remember seeing a young man wear one anywhere.

DeffoNeedANameChange · 26/01/2025 17:41

Isn't it really good luck that all the uncomfortable, impractical clothing that so many women find so empowering also happens to be exactly the sort of semi-pornographic clothing that men love to look at? Everyone's a winner 🙄

ZiggyZowie · 26/01/2025 17:41

I agree

I wear swim shorts and tankini top ,

But then I'm over 60🤔

HardenYourHeart · 26/01/2025 17:43

It's butt-floss and if you fart or don't wipe very carefully after a shit, then you'll see the effect of said floss when you take off your "suit".

unsync · 26/01/2025 17:46

Public arse flossing is not something to aspire to. I must confess it fascinates me that (presumably) they think it is attractive. Just as presumably men think budgie smugglers are attractive.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 26/01/2025 17:46

I agree they are disgusting. I think they shouldn't be allowed in indoor pools. It annoys me on a point of principle to be honest, why should I be forced to cover my breasts when someone else is showing their bum? I'm not suggesting pools should be topless but it's It's utterly bizarre what we allow or not. A woman can show every side of their breast but not the nipple, but men can freely show the nipple. Maybe if nipples are ok to show, women's suits should cover the fleshy part but leave the nipple visible, but in fact its the opposite. And butt cheeks are OK now but only for women, a tiny string covering the middle part. Why cant men do this too? An arsehole is an arsehole and has the same function for both sexes.

Tilly915 · 26/01/2025 17:48

You're not allowed to wear them at my local pool. You'd get kicked out.

KimberleyClark · 26/01/2025 17:49

Thongs aren’t called bum flossers for nothing. Yuck.

Havanananana · 26/01/2025 17:50

PretendToBeToastWithMe · 26/01/2025 16:51

Totally grim, especially in a pool/spa environment where they may be sitting in a sauna or steam room in the same place someone else will come and put their bum when they leave 🤢.

Where I live in Europe saunas are strictly naked - although there is an expectation that one sits on a towel.

There is also a requirement to shower before entering a swimming pool or the sauna or steam room.

PlopSofa · 26/01/2025 17:50

I call them poo straps. I mean really, what else are they? Friction poo straps.

Awful! But of course I'm a total pearl-clutcher!!

UK pools are full of the great unwashed too. Unlike in Europe, no one ever washes before decanting their sweat and general filth into pool.

Do we need to add friction-y poo straps to that unholy mix as well?

I just think there is a level of decency that should be displayed in a confined area such as a pool, after all a beach is huge in comparison.

Arses, boob, side boob, under boob, and penis bulges should be covered.

But then, I see school girls walking to school with their skirt rolled up so much their ass cheeks are hanging out so apparently it's the done thing to be on display.

Don't get me started on the gym leggings in fashion these days.

Used to have this at a school at which I taught. What they never seemed to realise was that when they rolled their skirts up to reveal their legs, they were left with a huge muffin top of material so they looked like doughnuts on legs.

PurpleDiva22 · 26/01/2025 17:52

As a thong-style swimsuit wearer, I just want to clarify some of the accusations made on this thread:
I'm not an exhibitionist
I'm not trying to get the attention of men
I'm not attention seeking
I don't think I look like a model
I don't want to show off my body
I don't think it's empowering
I'm not wearing them to look or feel sexy
I don't think it's "attractive" (or unattractive, I dont consider my level of attractiveness when I'm going swimming, I just want to swim)

I just find them comfortable. I put them on, walk from the changing room to the pool, and swim. Sin é!

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 26/01/2025 17:52

Why cant men do this too?

Why would they want to? I mean I have no idea why women want to.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 26/01/2025 17:52

BeansOnRoast · 26/01/2025 17:03

Very odd behaviour to be staring at other people's bodies so much.

But that's exactly what they want isn't it? It's doing them a favour really. They need people to look at their exposed bum to feel validated as a person, so give them what they want. They go home feeling good about themselves because they believe we are all admiring them, it doesn't occur to them that most people see them as attention seeking and egocentric and lacking self esteem.

Gowlett · 26/01/2025 17:53

Depends on the bum, I suppose…

I am a member at David Lloyd, just had a new spa retreat open. Some of the women wear the most hideous costumes, tiny bit of material shoved up their arse and the boobs spilling out everywhere, they look hysterical to me,but of course it gets the attention of men.

The women that wear a one piece time look a million times better.

I joined many years ago,it was Esporta back then and women had to wear a one piece costume.I am old so don’t think my opinion would count for anything!

Oh I remember the days when the local public swimming baths stipulated only one piece swim suits. No bikinis allowed.

shuggles · 26/01/2025 17:54

@MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel Arses, boob, side boob, under boob, and penis bulges should be covered.

How do you cover a penis bulge? A penis bulge, by definition, is covered. If it wasn't covered, then it would just be a penis.

Complaining about normal body parts showing through clothing is ridiculous. Should people be offended that your boobs show through clothing?

User79853257976 · 26/01/2025 17:55

I don’t know but your use of question marks is unreasonable.
