To think bums should be covered in a public pool?

I may be being unreasonable and I’m just old and out of touch… took my kids swimming today at our local public pool and there was a lady wearing one of those swimming costumes that is basically a thong at the back? I saw lots of them in the beach during the summer which I kind of understand as it helps you get a very high cut tan/eliminates tan lines but I felt a bit weird seeing one in an indoor pool? Not sure where boundaries lie…? Happy to be told IABU but wondered what others think?

They are just about OK at the beach. Definitely inappropriate for a public swimming pool.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 26/01/2025 16:44

I agree, there are always thong bikinis at the gym pool (not generally for swimming, but in the sauna etc).

I always think that someone would say something if men started wearing thong trunks.

I wonder why anyone would walk around looking like that. Someone wore this and bent down on holiday and my god I’ll never recover from what I sore (sic) inadvertently.

Edited

Because I find them more comfortable than standard bikini bottoms.

Noperope · 26/01/2025 16:49

I don't see how they are any less hygienic than full bum briefs?

May09Bump · 26/01/2025 16:49

I think they are grim in any situation. And attention seeking at a public pool, but those who wear them I suspect couldn't give a fig leaf about anyone else.

Tbh I have a real issue with the hygiene of thongs.
I wouldn't want to swim in a swimming pool where people were going in the water wearing thong type swim wear.

I know realistically people urinate in pools and thats bad enough but the thought of people swimming without their bums being covered repulses me.

You know the water in a swimming pool washes the arsehole of everyone in there? Being covered by swimwear makes no difference whatsoever.

It looks ugly and unsightly and people are cringing for you. So whilst you might be comfortable, you may like to consider what you are inflicting on other people, children and grannies! It’s not a good look, sorry.

PretendToBeToastWithMe · 26/01/2025 16:51

Totally grim, especially in a pool/spa environment where they may be sitting in a sauna or steam room in the same place someone else will come and put their bum when they leave 🤢.

mitogoshigg · 26/01/2025 16:51

I'm with you, not keen on them on family orientated beaches either, if you don't want tan lines go to a nudist beach (I have no issues with these btw but you have a choice to go or not)

That’s what I thought. 🤢

I don't think you should go on sunny holidays anymore.

weirdoboelady · 26/01/2025 16:54

For those who don't understand the hygiene issue - surely 'proper' swimwear filters farts?

MayaPinion · 26/01/2025 16:55

Nobody needs to see an arse hanging out when they’re trying to do the backstroke at the local municipal pool. It’s very needy and LOOK AT MY ARSE.

crumblingschools · 26/01/2025 16:55

How can something with a bit of cheese wire separating your bum cheeks be more comfortable than material that sits on your bum cheeks?

Could you link to a fart-filtering bikini, please? I'm serious.

DoubleDoubleDown · 26/01/2025 16:56

I wear full arse coverage myself but surely apart from the walk to / from the change room,it's underwater and out of view?. I'm more grossed out by hairy backs than a bit of cheek.

Cherry8809 · 26/01/2025 16:57

I wouldn’t wear them myself but I wouldn’t care in the slightest if someone else did.

mitogoshigg · 26/01/2025 16:58

@LadyWiddiothethird

I find bikinis more comfortable than one pieces though all of mine have underwire and substantial hold it all in bottoms, thongs are incredibly uncomfortable always. I'd say my bikinis are more respectable than most one pieces because they support my substantial top half better

The same with those arse enhancing leggings. Just dont🤮

They are always worn by people who imagine they look like the models in the pictures. Sadly they are very much the flat arse brigade.

Oh no, not the bum-cheek-specific germs... 🙄

Or the ones with huge ones. Either way, its awful.

Are you fundamentally misunderstanding what a thong is or have they changed them since I last checked and they now cut-out over your arsehole?

Nannylovesshopping · 26/01/2025 17:01

I think people nowadays want to show off their bodies more, fat/thin, at my gym in changing room, boobs fannies arses everywhere, don’t think any kind of modesty exists anymore!

Are children and grannies not people or why did you name them separately? I really couldn't give a fuck what other people think to be honest, and I imagine the vast majority of people aren't giving a second thought to my choice of swimwear. I just want to be comfortable.

HollyKnight · 26/01/2025 17:02

My poor hemorrhoid would never forgive me.
