To think bums should be covered in a public pool?

I may be being unreasonable and I’m just old and out of touch… took my kids swimming today at our local public pool and there was a lady wearing one of those swimming costumes that is basically a thong at the back? I saw lots of them in the beach during the summer which I kind of understand as it helps you get a very high cut tan/eliminates tan lines but I felt a bit weird seeing one in an indoor pool? Not sure where boundaries lie…? Happy to be told IABU but wondered what others think?

Very odd behaviour to be staring at other people's bodies so much

Pretty bloody hard to miss them when you’re 4 years old and your face is at arse height!

Four year olds aren't naturally bothered about seeing arses. It's only an issue if you make it one.

No-one has ever made an issue of it in our family but I can pretty much guarantee that our 4 year old grandchild would trill very loudly, “I can see their butt”

Long time ago now but both of our kids had their “bumface” and “poo-poo” head phases. 🤣

That’s what I thought. 🤢

The thought of washing around grimy arseholes and genitalia does put me off.

BOAK.

Oh and I had to shush my son from saying “butt cheeks” repeatedly.

You should've let him carry on, it might've helped her realise it wasn't the appropriate place to have her arse cheeks out on display 🤣

Ladamesansmerci · 26/01/2025 17:24

I didn't realise anyone actually wore these outside of Love Island 🤣

It looks ugly and unsightly and people are cringing for you. So whilst you might be comfortable, you may like to consider what you are inflicting on other people, children and grannies! It’s not a good look, sorry.

Personally, I'm not looking at other people's arses, much less judging them for wearing a swimming costume.

Neither are most 'grannies' - even if they tend to count themselves as people, largely - we're more concerned about aggressive swimmers charging through us as though we're not there, feral children landing on our heads, shitting or puking in the pool or, most likely of all, having other people judging us for not having perfect bodies.

NPET · 26/01/2025 17:25

Apart from anything else it's embarrassing. Little boys won't exactly hide their amusement at seeing them.

Tbh I have a real issue with the hygiene of thongs.
I wouldn't want to swim in a swimming pool where people were going in the water wearing thong type swim wear.

I know realistically people urinate in pools and thats bad enough but the thought of people swimming without their bums being covered repulses me.

Why? It's not as though you're going to catch anything, is it?

Wouldn't bother me haha. I don't mind being the butt of a four year olds jokes 😂

Appropriateness aside, it’s rarely a flattering look but I assume most thong wearers aren’t bothered what I think.

It always amazes me that topless sunbathing is now frowned upon and yet everyone has their arse hanging out . On 99.9 % it's just not a good look .

Is topless sunbathing now frowned upon? I didn't realise that. I got my tits out all around the world before having kids. I'm surprised really to hear this.

Are any swimsuits really that flattering though?

You seem to not realise that the only part of a bum that is in any way 'dirty' is the arsehole and things cover arseholes. Buttocks are not dirty.

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 26/01/2025 17:29

I look at thongs and all I can think is "thrush" 😆

We were in tenerife last year at the water park, walking between rides and we walked behind 2 girls and 2 guys aged probably low to mid 20s.

The girls swimwear showed so much arse and the men just kept slapping their arses as we walked behind them.

My son piped up that their bums resembled Homer Simpson when his stomach was slapped and didn't stop wobbling.

I mean, the jiggle was rather hilarious and the men seemed to want to keep slapping these buttocks so the jiggle never stopped.

DH and I were both clutching our pearls, but my DD's (15 & 12) and son (13) thought it was the funniest and most ridiculous thing they had ever seen. 🤣

I’ve seen nice ones that have suited the wearer before now.

I’ve just been looking for a swim dress though, so possible I know feck all about fashion.

ALunchbox · 26/01/2025 17:29

I don't like them but I don't think they are any worse in a pool than on a beach.

Obimumkinobi · 26/01/2025 17:29

The fundamental issue I have with this type of swimwear is that women haven't been begging for decades for swimsuits that 'free their arses". Like thong pants, ever decreasing gussets and very high cut knickers, they've been produced primarily with the male gaze in mind. Make no mistake, women's comfort has never been the driver for flashing your arse cheeks at the pool.

And as for the "Chill out Grandma, it's just a body parts!" Brigade - yeah, so are flaps and bollocks but I don't want to see them in my local pool either.

I think one pieces are somewhat less unflattering on me shall we say 😅

Axelotl · 26/01/2025 17:30

I agree with you. Not suitable for a family pool. Saw lots on holiday. Don' treally like them. They don't suit everyone either! (eg the slim but middle aged and hence saggy of arse - thongs are not their friends)

However if I mentioned this to my late teen dd she would accuse me of shut shaming..

My teen girls like the ones that are swimsuits with shorts, there is probably a name for them.

Oodlesandoodlesofnoodles · 26/01/2025 17:32

Honestly I wish men would wear swim tops as well. It’s all just too much flesh.

Printedword · 26/01/2025 17:32

It's yuk and the amount of hair removal needed to achieve the look is quite revolting.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 26/01/2025 17:32

I’m going to have to google as I just can’t imagine what that must look like poolside 🤣

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 26/01/2025 17:33

I just think they look uncomfortable. I hate having to pull pants/pyjamas out of my arse crack, why would you want that feeling all day? I am old and of the time when small pert bums were the ideal - thongs make every arse look enormous IMO

Inappropriate at the pool. I remember seeing this lady , who wore a very revealing and skimpy bikini to the pool. She came in with small children but let them splash about in the children's pool while she stool out the pool at the side , hand on one hip in various poses like she thought she was God's gift to the world. I just thought how Inappropriate, like anyone cares about how you look at the pool when the rest of us parents are having fun with our children. She never even put her toe in the pool the whole time , more concerned about how she looked , her clevage and buttocks out in full show

You seem to have spent an awful lot of time studying this woman in her various poses. Perhaps like we tell men, you should just not look.
Go play with your kids.

Animatic · 26/01/2025 17:33

I wish the rules mandated swimming caps, don't care re the shape of the swimsuits :).
