To think bums should be covered in a public pool?

I may be being unreasonable and I’m just old and out of touch… took my kids swimming today at our local public pool and there was a lady wearing one of those swimming costumes that is basically a thong at the back? I saw lots of them in the beach during the summer which I kind of understand as it helps you get a very high cut tan/eliminates tan lines but I felt a bit weird seeing one in an indoor pool? Not sure where boundaries lie…? Happy to be told IABU but wondered what others think?

Is it okay for men to do it? I've never seen anyone test that theory.

We should let them, it's just bum.cheeks.?

I couldn't give a fuck to be honest. I find them comfortable! As I said, I take approximately 7 steps and then I'm in the pool. Once I'm in the pool nobody can clearly see what bottoms I've got on!

Do you realise that you are not supposed to stay glued to your sunbed?! That you’re literally incapacitating yourself as you can’t even pick anything up. Those around you are feeling nauseous with your bum crack is out, because apparently everything else is uncomfortable ( I don’t believe that for an instant )

What happens to discharge?!
It’s just minging.

I think there's one person who's weird here, and it's not the person wearing a perfectly normal bikini but the one who's nauseous over a few inches of bumcheek and thinking about other people's discharge...

1234jump · 26/01/2025 21:01

Was it an actual thong though?? I haven't seen an actual thong in years on someone or for sale. Are you sure it wasn't just a high cut costume?? Did it actually sit in between the bum cheeks??

What are you on about glued to my sunbed? Also, my bum crack isn't out. Neither is my vuvla. There's actually quite a substantial amount of material at the back, it is much wider than a thong underwear. The front is as covered as a normal swimsuit, just slightly higher at the top of my leg which is what I find most comfortable about them (I don't care if you don't believe what I feel comfortable in on MY body!).

Yes, haven’t you seen the thong bikinis that are everywhere now? They are (not in some cases, unfortunately) very firmly between the bum cheeks.

Yogaatsunrise · 26/01/2025 21:06

Yes the ones we are talking about are the string thongs and not the small brief types. There is a world of difference. They look so sore.

mirrorglitterball · 26/01/2025 21:08

I don’t like the look of them but not sure there’s a hygiene issue in pools.

Every part of every body in the pool is getting washed into the water, whatever swimwear is covering it!

I remember someone pointing out on a thread ages ago that swim nappies are just designed to hold a poo in place. If a baby pees it’s straight through into the water.

Period swimwear is also increasingly common.

Swimming pools are just pretty gross, it’s best not to think about it! 😅

Juliagreeneyes · 26/01/2025 21:08

This kind of thing - everywhere in ASOS, Boohoo etc.

Literally like the first few shops on Google search

And on asos for like £5 in the sale

MightyGoldBear · 26/01/2025 21:10

It's a very interesting topic.
If its just bums and skin like any other area and potentially more comfortable. Should we encourage/be comfortable with children wearing thongs? And all ages/ genders?

Feel free to search “thong bikini U.K.” if you want to obtain one, @1234jump – they are all rather cheap on sale right now 😆

You presume I wear thong bikinis? No, I don't, but I have zero issue with people who do. When I'm at the pool, I'm supervising my DC, swimming, and minding my own business. Unlike you, who is apparently occupied with staring at the arses of strangers.

You presume i hang out at swimming pools staring at ladies arses? No i don't - but my point still stands, who ever's arse we are talking about

Anyone putting children in thongs needs investigating.

I am a member at David Lloyd, just had a new spa retreat open. Some of the women wear the most hideous costumes, tiny bit of material shoved up their arse and the boobs spilling out everywhere, they look hysterical to me,but of course it gets the attention of men.

The women that wear a one piece time look a million times better.

I joined many years ago,it was Esporta back then and women had to wear a one piece costume.I am old so don’t think my opinion would count for anything!

I'd agree that the thong things are too much (too little?) in a local swimming pool but the ladies aerobics class that precedes my lane swim is full of women in the same dreadful all encompassing black one piece. To me they look so bland and frumpy. Why no colour? Why all so uniformly bland?

cadburyegg · 26/01/2025 21:17

I don't usually pay any attention to what people wear but I think it's grim too. I took a video of my 9 year old body boarding in the sea last summer (it was a busy beach at the peak of the summer holidays) and accidentally got a lady in the shot wearing this type of attire. So every time I look at the video I see her arse. Lovely.

There's a reason that we teach children that bums are private areas and it's rather confusing saying that to them when you've got people in pools and on family beaches showing theirs in full view.

Juliagreeneyes · 26/01/2025 21:20

Right - but even if you’re walking 7 steps to the pool in one, you’re kidding yourself if you think it’s normal swimwear.

The model’s bum looks great in her Tanis Micro Thong Bikini Bottoms in my post upthread - IF you’re admiring its adult qualities. (I’m bi, happy to admire an attractive female arse every so often.) Lounging by the pool at Nikki Beach for an adult audience, fine. But I don’t particularly want my 12 y o DD to think that porn outfits or exposing the arse as a sexualised body part are normal at the municipal baths, or at family swimming time at a mid-range hotel in the Midlands, thanks very much. Because, let’s not kid ourselves, all of these bikinis are about sexualising the arse for people to look at. They aren’t sports swimwear.

Sounds like you're not wearing a thong swimming costume then, they absolutely involve your bum crack being out.

I had the misfortune of having to queue behind a young woman in one of these to get onto a water slide. It was not a fun 20 mins as the angle of the stairs and me being on the step or two below was revealing and not on a good way.

This would be funny if it wasn't so disgusting. Keep your bare bums out of people's faces when they are on water slide steps, simple. I've been there too & hated it.

I'm very happy to have just gotten this advert when looking at this thread!

I blame Love Island and similar dross.
