To think that wolf whistling wasn't such a bad thing?

Joanna Lumley has just given an interview in which she says..."I never minded wolf whistling, I always thought it was tremendous".

She also said... "I think we were a little bit tougher then. Somebody put their hand on your leg, you didn’t feel affronted and report it. You’d give them a slap.”

Do you think she is right?

I’m not sure why any of us care what Joanna Lumley thinks anyway. She’s not someone whose opinion I usually take notice of!

Agreed. I know there is a school of thought that believes that any celebrity with a posh accent must invariably be clever; but JL's comments reveal her to be spectacularly stupid and tone deaf. In a time when we have epidemic levels of violence against women and girls, she should be ashamed of having used her profile to spout this.

Personally, after years of being harassed - and worse - by men, I know I never found it a complement. It was offensive and intimidating, and usually intended as such. The single best thing for me about getting older - by a long long way - is that I am not subjected to nearly as much harassment by men. Is that not a sad thing for me to have to say?

It's also interesting that Lumley was a model, and it's well known that models had to put up with a great deal of harassment in the industry. If she really escaped it with little more than a hand on her knee, she should count herself lucky.

Lumley is just coming out with a lot of barshit things at the moment to shill that Amandaland. What's the other thing she said recently to grab some column inches, that women are jealous of their daughters? 🙄

NovemberMorn · 25/02/2025 12:59

Just popped back to add to this.
All the posters who wrote Joanna Lumley off as a 'has been', saying her opinions don't matter, she is long past it, etc...confusing her personal comments with her rather extensive work history, both past and present.

Wasn't she just fabulous in Amandaland?😏

She was great in Amandaland, which makes her comments all the more disappointing.

RufustheFactuaIReindeer · 25/02/2025 17:12

Yes, as an actress she acted well in Amandaland

yay!?

RufustheFactuaIReindeer · 25/02/2025 17:13

And i still don’t think she right…

If actors wish to be judged only on the quality of their performances, it would seem sensible to avoid airing controversial views. JL is no more qualified to pontificate about the supposed lack of resilience of other woman because she gave a good performance in a recent show.

You miss the point.
She was said (on here) to be past it, desperate for attention, she was only a model and third rate actress anyway (I am paraphrasing)
I think she has proven that she is indeed still very current, no matter her views.

She was also extremely good in Fool me once, she is a very popular actress, presenter and personality, and has been for decades.

RufustheFactuaIReindeer · 26/02/2025 09:14

Look

its perfectly possible for some posters to think that JL is a fabulous actress and is spot on with her comments

or that she is a fabulous actress and that her comments are wrong

or you like her in stuff you’ve seen but wouldn’t go out of your way to watch her and think her comments are wrong/right

or that shes an awful actress and shes wrong/right

everyone is entitled to their opinion on both her acting and her comments, noone who thinks she is a bad actress and wrong is going to change their mind because she is on a tv show they may not have watched

i really feel you think this is some sort of gotcha…..it isn’t

and i am sure Joanna Lumley isn’t reading this but if she is

you were great in Amandaland, loved the delivery of just about every line but especially the ‘londis’ one 😀 and your face when you sell the focus horse

RufustheFactuaIReindeer · 26/02/2025 09:14

And the £20 notes bits

She was, as was Michelle Keegan, if people haven't seen the series, I highly recommend it.
