SIL getting upset over something I said to my DOG

Poitoi · 25/01/2025 23:13

I recently spent a day with SIL, brother and their wedding planner. I am best woman and have quite a lot of responsibilities. It was intense but productive - we actually had a laugh.

Anyway, we went to my parents’ house after the day of planning. Here SIL heard me fussing over my dog who I hadn’t seen at all that day. At some point I said something along the lines of “Oh I missed you. A day without you is a day wasted in my book” to my dog. Obviously over the top and non-serious, I was just being silly with my dog.

Brother has since told me that SIL was really offended by this comment and is hurt. I just find that ridiculous. I told SIL on the way to my parents I had had a lovely time. I think dog people will see I was just being ott. My dog was being all snuggly and excited to see me so I just played into it.

AIBU?

How can I take offence on the part of another person?

You've managed it so far.

You've managed it so far.

Please don't tell me what I'm feeling. You don't know me, and it's creepy.

NiftyKoala · 26/01/2025 01:49

I adore my my dog but honestly canyon see her point. It was a weird thing to say really.

Fairandsquare100 · 26/01/2025 01:49

@lastminutetrip but the day wasn’t called wasted was it? It’s clearly a turn of phrase.

Honestly I swear there are people out there who want to be offended. They are literally sitting waiting to find something offensive.

That said, OP it can’t be denied that a significant proportion of people on this thread think YABU. If I were you I’d apologise to SIL, explain it was a turn of phrase but you are sorry all the same and go forth with your life surrounding yourself with as many of “your people” and as few of the general public as possible 😂

that poster seems to think

There you go. You don't know what @Poitoi thinks, only what they write on MN and nowhere does she say or imply this. Read her posts, her contextualising is thorough.

Neither do you but you've jumped on to defend her honour.

steff13 · 26/01/2025 01:51

echt · 26/01/2025 01:35

Just because other posters agree doesn't make it so.

What needs to be clarified?

I didn't say it made it so. I said other people interpreted at the same way therefore there's another perspective and the sister-in-law's interpretation is a valid one. There is no right or wrong in this situation; neither of them is right and neither of them is wrong It's a misunderstanding.

What needs to be clarified is that the OP said that what her sister-in-law interpreted was not what she meant. The only way the sister-in-law would know that is if the OP tells her correct?

Fucking hell, unicorn is creepy, I’m rude, I’m off to tell my dog about all the time I wasted talking to you

But you literally have. You've just found all the posts that don't agree with OP and argued with yourself. That is the definition of being offended on someone else's behalf. Strange behaviour.

Echt is similar.to OP in the sense it's everybody else's fault but theirs.

It's not a turn of phrase I've heard, what does it mean?

Neither do you but you've jumped on to defend her honour.

There you go, the emotive "jumped" when I'm posting to express an opinion.

"Defend her honour"? What, is she a transgressed maiden?

I find it's best to avoid such over-egged expressions and stick to rational debate.

Fairandsquare100 · 26/01/2025 01:54

@DressOrSkirt its an adaption of the Charlie Chaplin quote “a day without laughter is a day wasted”

I find its best to ignore insufferable posters who have nothing to add but just want to show how terribly clever they are.

lastminutetrip · 26/01/2025 01:55

I’m sorry but does “rational debate” include private and personal conversations with animals that cannot speak.

The plot is firmly lost here

YeOldeGreyhound · 26/01/2025 01:56

This thread is madness.
OP spoke to her dog. Her SiL overheard and took offence.
OP can apologise and explain it was just talk with her dog. If SiL continues to take issue with that, then that is her problem.

Speaking of over egged expressions and lack of reasoned debate.

No, just the posters. But then you know that.

Parse that one for me for the emotive language.

I'm sure she will apologise, it just won't be genuine

This thread is madness.
OP spoke to her dog said something considered my many to be rude. Her SiL overheard and took offence understood OP had wasted her day.
OP took a lot of convincing to can apologise and explain it was insensitive just talk with her dog. If SiL continues to take issue with that, then that is her problem.

agreed with the last sentence
