SIL getting upset over something I said to my DOG

Poitoi · 25/01/2025 23:13

I recently spent a day with SIL, brother and their wedding planner. I am best woman and have quite a lot of responsibilities. It was intense but productive - we actually had a laugh.

Anyway, we went to my parents’ house after the day of planning. Here SIL heard me fussing over my dog who I hadn’t seen at all that day. At some point I said something along the lines of “Oh I missed you. A day without you is a day wasted in my book” to my dog. Obviously over the top and non-serious, I was just being silly with my dog.

Brother has since told me that SIL was really offended by this comment and is hurt. I just find that ridiculous. I told SIL on the way to my parents I had had a lovely time. I think dog people will see I was just being ott. My dog was being all snuggly and excited to see me so I just played into it.

AIBU?

Yeah I think you need to think this one through wider picture. I baby and fuss over my cats to a large degree knowing that they don’t know wtf I’m actually saying to them and they just recognise the tone in my voice. If you're within hearing of another person and say something like that as you have done, I think you need to give yourself a shake. That wasn’t fair. I'd take offence as well. You can love your dog and also accept that you were tone deaf in this situation. Surely that's not difficult to work out?

VisitationRights · 26/01/2025 02:02

Is your sil generally so insecure? It sounds over the top that she would be upset over something you said to your dog.

OneLemonDog · 26/01/2025 02:02

I'm like this with my pets (well, the ones whose worlds seems to revolve around me). When they're absolutely delighted to see you and making an almighty fuss (because they haven't seen you in a few hours) I'll absolutely say ridiculous and overblown things to them - and just as OP put it, to match their energy.

I can sort of see why, particularly if she isn't used to people being like that with their pets (or maybe hasn't had that themselves), SIL would be upset in the first instance, but she's being daft.

This thread is madness.
OP spoke to her dog said something considered my many to be rude. Her SiL overheard and took offence understood OP had wasted her day.
OP took a lot of convincing to can apologise and explain it was insensitive just talk with her dog. If SiL continues to take issue with that, then that is her problem.

agreed with the last sentence

I can't make any sense of your post. What are the lines? It makes your comment seems really jumbled.

I’ve corrected your work for you. Read it without the crossed out parts and it makes more sense

Sorry, I can't. It makes no sense.

Read it to your dog, he’ll tell you x

@DressOrSkirt its an adaption of the Charlie Chaplin quote “a day without laughter is a day wasted”

So if you'd spent a solemn day with a friend at their relatives funeral, it would be ok to say infront of them "a day without laughter is a day wasted" because it's just a turn of phrase?

@YeOldeGreyhound @lastminutetrip this most recent exchange is rather heartwarming and serves to take the heat out of your pointless debate. 😂

Even saying this as a joke to your dog, this is rude and spiteful OP, no wonder your SIL is pissed off, spending a whole day with you for you to say that as soon as you get home?! Don’t be surprised if you’re ignored at the wedding now.

Different context that though isn’t it. Although I would argue that a funeral with no laughter at all is a sad state of affairs, so I personally probably wouldn’t be offended by use of that different quote in that different context either tbh.

So was manipulating a vulnerable poster and pretending it was in good faith.

There's several other pages of comments to you you could be addressing rather than continuing to attempt to bully me, I look forward to seeing those responses.

I haven't been here for four hours at all. Like everyone else, I've been in and out.

Will you be reporting OP for her lies to a vulnerable poster?
