SIL getting upset over something I said to my DOG

Poitoi · 25/01/2025 23:13

I recently spent a day with SIL, brother and their wedding planner. I am best woman and have quite a lot of responsibilities. It was intense but productive - we actually had a laugh.

Anyway, we went to my parents’ house after the day of planning. Here SIL heard me fussing over my dog who I hadn’t seen at all that day. At some point I said something along the lines of “Oh I missed you. A day without you is a day wasted in my book” to my dog. Obviously over the top and non-serious, I was just being silly with my dog.

Brother has since told me that SIL was really offended by this comment and is hurt. I just find that ridiculous. I told SIL on the way to my parents I had had a lovely time. I think dog people will see I was just being ott. My dog was being all snuggly and excited to see me so I just played into it.

AIBU?

How do we know?
Or has the OP launched a whole thread based on inventing what her brother said? Devilishly devious if so..

She certainly is that.

Arf.

Whispers to the cat “day was a total waste, I’d totally rather have been with you”

oh you heard me??? You’re hurt??? How dare you tbh, that was private between me and Pussy Cheeks!!!

It is ridiculous for a grown adult to get offended by what someone says to their pet.

This.

steff13 · 26/01/2025 01:33

Her interpretation was valid as evidenced by several other posters saying they would have interpreted it the same way. This isn't someone being offended over something ridiculous this was a valid interpretation of something that was overheard. It needs to be clarified.

And Stephen Frye is a dick.

So if I said yeoldegreyhound bored my ear off all day, to my dog, within your ear shot, you’d be cool with that?

lastminutetrip · 26/01/2025 01:34

Good to know I can call whoever I want, anything I want, as long as I’m talking to a pet. Got it.

Just because other posters agree doesn't make it so.

What needs to be clarified?

But OP didn't say that. She did not mention her SiL at all.

She said "Oh I missed you. A day without you is a day wasted in my book".

No mention of anyone. Was an endearing thing to say to her dog.

That poster is ND, OP has already twisted and manipulated a comment both me and another poster made to deflect from her and the topic at hand to make us look a certain way . Go canny.

If you're offering this as analogous to the OP'c situation then it's very wide of the mark as no name was involved.

Then why come to mumsnet and ask for opinions?

Fairandsquare100 · 26/01/2025 01:37

OP I think you’re getting a hard time here. IMO your SIL is being dramatic to be so easily offended by something you’ve said to your dog. I don’t think she and I would get along. In fact, I’d suggest that perhaps she and some PP’s are showing their true colours in being so quick to jump to thinking you’re being passive aggressive. It takes one to know one and all that.

On the flip side, many dog owners seem to treat their dogs like… dogs? I am not one of those dog owners and I talk to my dogs at length, about serious and silly subjects, whether they understand me or not. I’ll never forget the look on my best friends face when I referred to my dogs as my DD’s “sisters” 😂 she is also a dog owner and that was a moment of realisation for me that not everyone views dogs the same. She thought I was bonkers.

The day was called a waste.
A day planning the sister in laws wedding.

it was a shitty thing to say.

No, OP told her dog "Oh I missed you. A day without you is a day wasted in my book"

WigglyVonWaggly · 26/01/2025 01:39

She needs to grow up. It’s clearly a daft comment to a DOG.

Your very rude use of @YeOldeGreyhound in your example was what I was referring to.

The SIL inferred the critique.

DressOrSkirt · 26/01/2025 01:42

I'm a dog person and I think you are being unreasonable. You said a day without your dog was a day wasted infront of the people you just spent the day with.
That's objectively offensive so say sorry, it was a silly remark you didn't mean.

Because that poster seems to think that it’s legitimate to say anything you want as long as it’s between a pet and a human. Just because the day was called wasted to the dog, to a wall, to a frog, it doesn’t matter, it was still called wasted in the sister in laws presence

Was I rude? My dog was in the room when I typed it so it’s on you if you want to take offence.😂

How can I take offence on the part of another person?

zerogrey · 26/01/2025 01:48

Well SIL clearly needs to get over herself. I say all sorts of stuff like that to my dog and if people get upset, it's tough shit.

There you go. You don't know what @Poitoi thinks, only what they write on MN and nowhere does she say or imply this. Read her posts, her contextualising is thorough.
