SIL getting upset over something I said to my DOG

Poitoi · 25/01/2025 23:13

I recently spent a day with SIL, brother and their wedding planner. I am best woman and have quite a lot of responsibilities. It was intense but productive - we actually had a laugh.

Anyway, we went to my parents’ house after the day of planning. Here SIL heard me fussing over my dog who I hadn’t seen at all that day. At some point I said something along the lines of “Oh I missed you. A day without you is a day wasted in my book” to my dog. Obviously over the top and non-serious, I was just being silly with my dog.

Brother has since told me that SIL was really offended by this comment and is hurt. I just find that ridiculous. I told SIL on the way to my parents I had had a lovely time. I think dog people will see I was just being ott. My dog was being all snuggly and excited to see me so I just played into it.

AIBU?

So was manipulating a vulnerable poster and pretending it was in good faith.

There's several other pages of comments to you you could be addressing rather than continuing to attempt to bully me, I look forward to seeing those responses.

I didn’t like how you framed @YeOldeGreyhound‘s difference of opinion as a lack of understanding. Your judgement is not definitive.

I don’t normally jump into other people’s interactions but I thought it was uncalled for and nasty.

I was referring to the poster who jumped in at the eleventh hour to virtue signal us meanies without reading OPs comments and behaviour.

I do all the time. I am the only human in my house, so I speak to my dog.

Poitoi · 26/01/2025 02:25

It’s ridiculous that people are being so literal. I was amusing myself by saying something exaggerated to my dog. No more, no less.

The key being not in front of other people to make a sly point. Most people talk to their pets. They just don't make passive aggressive comments to them.

Ah, you quoted me so I assumed it was directed at my comment.

Did OP do that? Or are you assuming she did?

Sorry yes I did upthread
I thought you meant when I said the same thing recently.

I'm not doing this again, when my comments are manipulated. Sorry.

Manipulated? OP just said how it is.

Different context that though isn’t it. Although I would argue that a funeral with no laughter at all is a sad state of affairs, so I personally probably wouldn’t be offended by use of that different quote in that different context either tbh.

I don't think it's any different. The OP said her day was wasted infront of the people she'd spent it with, planning their wedding. She's told us she didn't mean it but hasn't told her SIL that.

God forbid I haven’t spent all evening here 😂

@DressOrSkirt Then we shall agree to disagree 🤝

JMSA · 26/01/2025 02:44

I'm not sure why you would say these words within hearing distance of anyone Hmm
And I say this as someone who is obsessed with her dog!

JMSA · 26/01/2025 02:47

2Rebecca · 25/01/2025 23:28

Your dog won't have understood your words where as your SIL would have so I think your words were really aimed at your SIL.

Also this. The choice of words is odd and very pointed.

Windowsand · 26/01/2025 02:57

OP, ignore those vicious posts that feel the need to be so nasty and personal.

They successfully making opening a thread for many a once only experience.

I don't have a pet but I have heard the proclamations of adoration of theirs from friends.

Some are hilariously over the top and funny to my ears.
It was unfortunate she heard it and has taken offence.

I would be more careful around her in future....I doubt this will be the last such incident of offence taken that will occur.

Take it as a timely heads up.
Well done for apologising to her for any offence taken.

Poitoi · 26/01/2025 02:59

Prople are over analysing the heck out of what I said. It was said specifically because it is exaggerated, ridiculous and saccharine. I was just playing into the excitement of my dog with a cheesy line. It’s actually inspired by my grandpa who would say it but in relation to his grandkids.

I like SIL
We had a nice time and expressed as much
I was not intentionally passive aggressive
I didn’t even know who was in earshot when I was fussing over my dog

@Poitoi its the sort of thing I would have said to my dog also without even remembering what I’d done that day.
Tbh though my sil would have caused WW3 over anything like this, she was very hypersensitive.

You say was… Dead or divorce? If the former I hope the funeral was not without laughter 👀

The fact that you can’t see what you have done wrong soeaks volumes. I hope your SIL sees this sarcastic quote and whole thread and makes very different plans for how you’re going to be involved in her wedding now.

DressOrSkirt · 26/01/2025 01:42

I'm a dog person and I think you are being unreasonable. You said a day without your dog was a day wasted infront of the people you just spent the day with.
That's objectively offensive so say sorry, it was a silly remark you didn't mean.

I agree. You take pains to point out that you had "a laugh" and "a joke" during the day and put a whole lot of effort in, which by the way , everyone else was also doing. Saying that it was a "day wasted" in this context within her hearing is obviously going to be upsetting. I have dogs but I don't talk to them like you do.

Velmy · 26/01/2025 03:30

Tell them you've spoken to the dog again and made it clear that you were just joking.
