Am I a far right extremist?

1000 replies

Isitme245 · 25/01/2025 11:30

I had a conversation with my best friend of 25 years the other day and she called me a far right extremist and how my views are scary, dangerous and 'nazi coded'
I was really shocked as I didn't think any of what I said was bad. I'm not a particularly avid supporter of any political party and very much keep opinions to myself. She's very supportive of labour and anti trump and always has been. Usually when she asks me my opinions I just don't want to get into it but I did the other night and now I feel bad.

Here's the breakdown:

  • she sent me an article and told me that Nigel Farage is going to ban abortion eventually if he wins an election. I read the article and pointed out he only suggested lowering the abortion cut off date to 22 weeks (not 24 as it is now). I told her it wasn't the end of the world and it's reasonable if you read his reasons. I also made the point that men shouldn't really be getting involved in abortion law but that what he said wasn't the end of the world.
  • she asked me about immigration and I said that it's great but that we should be prioritising skilled immigrants and have stronger immigration laws. She also asked about asylum seekers and hotels and I said that we should have stronger laws about monitoring people and collecting documentation when people arrive.
  • she sent me and asked about Elon Musk's Nazi salute and I said I didn't interpret it that way
  • I said that immigrants who rape or murder should be deported.

To me this feels really reasonable and not over the top but she really attacked me for it? Now I feel really awkward and uncomfortable talking to her. Is this far right??

Your friend is bonkers. You're just a normal person with views that the majority in the UK hold.

Agree

I'm guessing that OP is the type that just wants to "have a sensible discussion about immigration", a lot.

Anyone denying that was a Nazi salute is not someone I’d want to be around.

The guy got lost in a frenzy, forgot himself for a moment and had to turn his face away to think about how he was going to backtrack with ‘my heart goes out to you’

MajorCarolDanvers · 25/01/2025 13:10

I’m on the centre left and agree on all those points except Elon musk.

he knew what he was doing

OneTC · 25/01/2025 13:10

I love it how no one is afraid of calling a load of footie hooligans knocking out that salute as deliberately provocative but when Eloner does it everyone's analysing the precise angles and his footwork

You've been backing a lunatic, live with it

Isitme245 · 25/01/2025 11:35

Not at all, I know everyone's different. I just want to know if this is considered far right. My understanding of far-right is people who are openly racist, want completely closed borders, abortion bans etc

Well no not really. The definition of being far right isn’t limited to how willingly you are to admit it or act in such a way.

People are still racist (some obviously not all) but know not to be as blatant as they were before.

Again people in 2025 know what the rules and laws of society and work are and will often ‘hide’ their true feelings. Some people who are racist - again not everyone is.

RoyalCorgi · 25/01/2025 13:10

Telling people that they are far right extremists is a great way to talk them round to your point of view. Look how well it worked for the Democrats.

Merida46 · 25/01/2025 13:07

was it anything like Emanuel Macron's "nazi salute?"
https://x.com/visegrad24/status/1882553556093571563

That’s a still not a video.
He’s waving not saluting.
His political positions are quite well known.
He doesn’t publicly support fascist German Political Parties or “Tommy Robinson”
If he’d actually done a Nazi support he would have apologised.

Twaddlepip · 25/01/2025 13:11

Isitme245 · 25/01/2025 11:36

I'm not sure but when watching it my mind didn't automatically go 'Nazi'
This is what I told her

He knew exactly what he was doing. To him, a powerful and unimaginably wealthy man, it is a game.

HermoineFairfax · 25/01/2025 13:11

I don’t think Musk’s gesture should be interpreted as a Nazi salute. Why? Because there is no indication that Elon Musk is a Nazi, or indeed, anything other than stridently anti-Nazi.

He is vociferously pro-free speech, which is completely antithetical to a Nazism. He is against state control. In his recent interview with Alice Weidel (the only time I have ever heard him reveal his personal opinions on Nazism), it is quite clear that he regards Nazism as a historic evil.

There is no view that I have heard him utter, that indicates the slightest sympathy towards Nazi sensibilities.

There are multiple alternative interpretations of the same gesture, as demonstrated by the various images floating around of Obama, Macron etc, none of which to my knowledge have been interpreted as a Nazi salute.

MyProudHare · 25/01/2025 13:13

Unrepentantfarter · 25/01/2025 11:53

Initially I didn't see it as a Nazi salute, but given this context I've changed my mind

I also didn't know this about him, although there are a lot of varying opinions on this thread.

OP, I don't think you are particularly right wing.

OneTC · 25/01/2025 13:13

it is quite clear that he regards Nazism as a historic evil

That's the problem

I can see a goat and think it’s a zebra but that doesn’t make me correct.

It’s shocking to hear anyone who describes themselves as a socialist and a feminist agree with Trump’s declaration that there are only two genders (not sexes) and put that into law. Lives will be lost as a direct result.

With friends like you, eh?

But the Executive Order states that "it is the policy of the United States to recognize two sexes, male and female."

What's wrong with that?

Defending Women From Gender Ideology Extremism And Restoring Biological Truth To The Federal Government – The White House

By the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, including section 7301 of title 5, United

Maray1967 · 25/01/2025 13:08

Yes - nazis stood up straight. To have saluted in the way that people are claiming Musk did would probably have got you shot in the Third Reich for disrespect.

For example

So people doing it on the terraces aren't actually doing a nazi salute, because it's not good enough quality 😮

ExtraOnions · 25/01/2025 13:14

You’re now allowed to say you are English anymore, they come and arrest you, just for saying you are English. You can go to Prison, if you say you are English.

Looks like a failed dabbing tbh

CurlewKate · 25/01/2025 13:15

@Grammarnut " I am a second wave feminist but have become comfortable with the support for abortion on demand, for example"

Puzzled by this....

ttcat37 · 25/01/2025 13:13

That still to me is definitely not a nazi salute, however I do think he deliberately did a salute that looked close enough to get everyone talking. Do I think he's a nazi - no. Do I think he's dangerous individual with no care for society - Yes.

ClairDeLaLune · 25/01/2025 13:16

BallerinaRadio · 25/01/2025 11:37

She's probably wondering how you can see someone do a nazi salute and not recognise it as a nazi salute

Should have gone to specsavers?

How do you feel about Macron’s?

Liv999 · 25/01/2025 13:17

I'd agree with a lot of your opinions apart from Elon Musk, I think he's a raving lunatic and that was a Nazi salute

TENSsion · 25/01/2025 13:16

You don’t sound at all well educated on the issues, but not an extremist.

carrit · 25/01/2025 13:18

Does the salute make the Nazi or does the Nazi make the salute?
