How do you get out of work if afraid to drive in amber alert!?

Really unsure what a legitimate reason could be!? Was already off 3 days last week poorly...!

@biscuitsandbooks

is dog walking your job?

Yes, my business.

It's absolutely not safe to walk - we've had roof tiles flying off into the roads, trampolines blowing into cars and trees in the roads. A car outside our house has a massive dent in the roof from some loose cement.

A mental health day if it’s giving you anxiety?

Feeling a bit apprehensive is understandable

Taking the day off would be a piss take

@Cunningfungus

Tesco hasn’t closed all its shops.

Good to know - I was just going off the announcement sent to my online account (Asda too until 6pm tonight) I could try and walk or wheel the 000s of miles to the nearest open one 😄

Life is too short to go out and risk your life when it’s windy or wet. I think more employers should have a clear policy on this and let people have the day off on days like this. What is the odd day here and there? Staff safety comes first

Stay home whenever there's wind or rain?! Hilarious

Heard it all now. What a nation of pussies we have become.

Because it's an amber warning she's concerned about, not a red.

It doesn't give free rein for everyone to decide they don't want to go to work.

If it’s an amber warning then there is a risk of danger. It’s not really about deciding ‘they don’t want to go to work’, more ‘perhaps I don’t want to risk my life going to work.’

StuffedFullOfFromage · 24/01/2025 14:34

@Plawp - oh give over. So it's fine if everyone chooses that option? The world would grind to a halt.

Great, so do you think I should go out on the coast and walk dogs in 100mph winds then?

That's not going to work is it?

At least have a decent counter remark if you are going to pick holes.

I wasn't trying to pick holes Hmm

I was trying to make the point that just because one person can get to work, doesn't mean everyone can. And just because some people can work from home or safely, doesn't mean we all can.

Whathashedonethistime · 24/01/2025 19:05

I’m not sure where you are OP, but this is the meaning of an orange warning according to the Irish met office

An ORANGE level warning is issued by Met Éireann for wind speeds with the capacity to produce dangerous, stormy conditions which may constitute a risk to life and property…Drive to anticipate strong cross winds and other hazards such as falling/fallen trees…Be aware of local conditions in your area; wind strengths can vary significantly from place to place (depending on direction and local topography).

If it were safe there wouldn’t be a warning and please just ignore people saying that it is, but you can judge the local conditions to some extent too.

If it’s dangerous to travel to work you shouldn’t do it. Weird how that’s confusing you

What a nest of vipers this place can be

I think thread like this show the UK version of the USA split.

You know like the Florida hurricane where some pack up and leave the hurricane zone or at least prepare and bunker down if they can't leave while others stand in the yard with a beer and a gun and yell 'bring it on, I ain't scared of no wind'.

Taking unnecessary risks with you life (which puts others at risk which is WHY warnings exist. Rescue workers don't want to die because you couldn't follow rules, warnings and common sense) does not make you moral, brave and smart... it simply puts you in the running for a Darwin award.

Anyone doing non life or death and emergency jobs should not add to the risk to those that have to work by thinking 'Ill take the risk and go to work too'.

Upstartled · 25/01/2025 14:19

The op had an amber warning for wind, this is hardly drinking beer and refusing an evacuation order as a deadly hurricane chops through.

Don't be silly.

The world can't grind to a halt because there's a bit of wind.

It as an Amber warning. Not a hurricane.

I wasn't making her feel bad, mate, not my intention anyway. So truly a ridiculous reply.

Working for essential services in the public sector, we don't get a choice! Have to come in all weathers, if we don't come in, it could put people's life at risk. Working at home is not an option for some services/jobs.

I have a sympathy for all emergency workers. Thanks for putting your lives at risk, I know people are not appreciative. So thank you.
