How do you get out of work if afraid to drive in amber alert!?

Really unsure what a legitimate reason could be!? Was already off 3 days last week poorly...!

OP posts:

I'm sat in my car and my car is shaking with the wind, there's bins flying across the road and trees down
It honestly feels like my car is going to lift up

I'm in the house but as usual it sounds like WW3 outside... between the constant roar of the wind over the houses & doors rattling (despite everything being closed) but outside it happened to be bin day today so bins are flying everywhere.

ManchesterPie · 24/01/2025 10:57

There is no legitimate reason so either go into work or face the consequences for not doing so.

Public transport in cancelled all day in parts of Scotland today, schools are closed, all non emergency NHS appointments cancelled, no trains. People will die today, it's wild out there.
Sympathies OP I have to go to work today today (red zone). Don't have far to drive though.

Same area, it's wild already and we've not even got to the worst of it. Please take care.

Alittlebitfluffy · 24/01/2025 11:10

Why are so many posters coming across so thick unable to differentiate between a red and amber area?

She said she was in an amber area so why all the posts going on about red areas not being safe? Surely people know this! This wasn't the question!

You have to go to work unless you can WFH or your employer says otherwise.

housethatbuiltme · 24/01/2025 10:49

People saying just go, are you all from low lying built up cities?

Up hear in the mountains people are killed every year by debris in wind and the advice is usually not to travel unless absoloutly necessary.

Try getting bitch slapped by a trampoline traveling at 60mph.

Last year a large garden mirror fell out of the sky and exploded all over my garden, it hit with such force large shards of razor sharp glass where thrown over 3 houses... but yeah, just go stand in it to catch the bus.

Yeah, it's not the wind gusts that may carry me away that worry me, it's the flying debris.
Terrifying
Stay safe

CoffeeCakeAndALattePlease · 24/01/2025 11:12

Are you able to wfh? If so then it’s reasonable to request that if there’s a formal warning in place. Thats what I advise my team to do. Appreciate it’s not possible for everyone.

RedToothBrush · 24/01/2025 11:14

Longtimelurkerfinallyposts · 24/01/2025 09:12

I'm shocked at all the posters saying you should go to work even if you have a Red Weather Warning. The advice we're getting here is pretty explicit: do not travel anywhere unless you really can't help it. Responsible employers have all told people NOT to come to work today and lots of businesses/ shops (as well as schools, nurseries, and council-run services) are completely closed for the day. No bin collections, no buses or trains, no deliveries... Trade unions like Unite hospitality have said they will take action against any employers that try to force people to travel to work. There are branches, roof tiles and all sorts blowing around, and I don't blame people for feeling scared about driving!

This isn't just some "shitty weather" - this is being described as a "once in a generation storm" and we're forecast to have 80 MILES AN HOUR winds here today (and I live inland). I know this sounds difficult to imagine - because it really doesn't happen very often!

Edited

Once in a generation storm. Like the one a month ago?

Hmm.

I'm kinda other that phrase tbh.

rewilded · 24/01/2025 11:19

We had an amber alert in the last storm. I had to drive in it and I was shocked at the amount of debris, road closures and idiotic drivers. Trees covering half the road and drivers with little care for other road users.

I would make your own decision OP do not go if you feel unsafe.

I had never seen so many trees come. I was drinking a coffee and looked out my window to see a large fir tree come down in my neighbour's garden.

Stay safe.

birdsstartagain · 24/01/2025 11:20

Take annual leave I guess.

We were sent home from work once as a storm was coming in. Just as well, when I went out the next day the city was covered with large debris that had fallen from buildings and trees fallen by the winds. I think that was 70mph though.

Solaire18381 · 24/01/2025 11:33

Working for essential services in the public sector, we don't get a choice! Have to come in all weathers, if we don't come in, it could put people's life at risk. Working at home is not an option for some services/jobs.

Plawp · 24/01/2025 11:37

If you think it’s dangerous absolutely don’t go in, some of the responses in this thread are eye rollingly silly

TuckerT · 24/01/2025 11:50

Cunningfungus · 24/01/2025 09:47

So how do you explain Tesco shutting all their shops and the NHS cancelling millions of non essential appointments?

Pretty standard behaviour from the NHS that.

Because it's an amber warning she's concerned about, not a red.

It doesn't give free rein for everyone to decide they don't want to go to work.

I don't really think the "colour" matters all that much. We're in Amber and everything is closed today because of the weather.

nahthatsnotforme · 24/01/2025 12:02

As a retired community midwife who walked through snow drifts when my car wouldn't go further to get to women I have little sympathy with those who choose not work because of the weather

SheWasPureSound · 24/01/2025 12:48

2chocolateoranges · 24/01/2025 07:31

Perfectly safe to travel in an amber warning area.

drive with care and be vigilant as always. You’ll be fine, no excuses needed.

To be fair I’m in an amber zone and multiple trees have fallen into roads (one right onto a car) so it’s fair enough for OP to be a bit anxious. Being so dismissive isn’t helpful.

Great, so do you think I should go out on the coast and walk dogs in 100mph winds then?

LuckySantangelo35 · 24/01/2025 12:56

DonnaBanana · 24/01/2025 08:28

Life is too short to go out and risk your life when it’s windy or wet. I think more employers should have a clear policy on this and let people have the day off on days like this. What is the odd day here and there? Staff safety comes first

@DonnaBanana

why would it being wet endanger your life?!
also in Uk it’s wet like 80% of the time in winter so it would be a lot of days off you’d be having!

BashfulClam · 24/01/2025 13:01

I’m in a red area wfh but the whole house is shuddering. The lights keep flickering.

Cunningfungus · 24/01/2025 09:47

@Cunningfungus

Tesco hasn’t closed all its shops.

Shinyandnew1 · 24/01/2025 13:07

I think you're looking at this the wrong way-rather than looking at how to 'get out of work' try thinking of it as how to make work possible!

is dog walking your job?

Pretty standard behaviour from the NHS that.

Indeed - putting peoples lives first. You’re quite correct.
