How do you get out of work if afraid to drive in amber alert!?

Really unsure what a legitimate reason could be!? Was already off 3 days last week poorly...!

Lol at people saying walk. That would honestly not be possible without getting blown off your feet. In fact a lady was blown off her feet recently in high winds and smashed her face, right outside my work. It happens.

So does getting hit by a bus in zero mph winds.

ExtraOnions · 24/01/2025 08:34

I once travelled on a train in an amber warning .. a tree had been blown across the track, and my West Coast Mainline train hit it as full force .. it was terrifying. I’ll not forget the screech of metal, I thought we were derailing. The front of the train was totally smashed in.

Took me a further 6 hours to get home amid delays, cancellations and speed restrictions.

I had (mild) whiplash, still painful though.

All these “carry on regardless” people, clearly have very little experience as to how dangerous it can be.

SoNiceToComeHomeTo · 24/01/2025 08:35

Can you talk to your manager before setting off? I’m in an amber zone and wouldn’t go out for the next couple of hours but it should be ok after that.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 24/01/2025 08:35

Someone from Scottish Fire and Rescue has just been on the news saying don't go out if you're in a red or amber area.

CenotaphCorner · 24/01/2025 08:38

Your company must by law have a health and safety policy following the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. This means they and you must take reasonable precautions to keep you safe which ought to include travel to and from work in conditions potentially dangerous such as this. Keep a note of dates and times and reason why.

Upstartled · 24/01/2025 08:39

Children still walking to school here in an Amber alert area. Just be sensible.

In an amber area? Hope it didn’t knock my kid of her feet when she was walking to school.

LuckySantangelo35 · 24/01/2025 08:42

@GLP1U5er

You don’t. You go to work like everyone else who lives in an amber warning area. End of.

You'd have a case if you were in a red warning area, but amber is fine.

It's not that clear cut. I'm in an amber area. Our winds are currently 77mph, predicted to peak at 82. My sister is in the red zone. Her winds are currently 37mph and not likely to get above 42mph, according to the forecast.

It's not impossible. We are in an amber area and it's wild out there and absolutely chucking it down, but the kids are all still walking to school and I don't have a car so I've got a half an hour walk to work.
Most people just have to get on with it.

Are you looking at gust speeds for your area and wind speeds in hers?

NormaleKartoffeln · 24/01/2025 08:52

TeamMandrake · 24/01/2025 08:24

I'm in an Amber zone, and schools and public transport are cancelled here too. We are forecast gusts up to 85mph. I certainly wouldn't be driving to work today, and there is no way I'd be able to find a taxi.

Fair enough. Your initial reply was referencing a red zone. I did also put a question mark after the suggestion of public transport....or at least I think I did.....

PokerFriedDips · 24/01/2025 08:54

An amber alert just means you allow extra time in case of delays and if your journey will be through an area of wilderness with no help accessible, have some emergency food/drink in the car in case you get stuck. just be prepared. An amber warning is not a carte blanche for everyone to down tools and stop working Does your normal route to work take you along a precarious clifftop edge? If so leave a bit earlier and go a longer route avoiding the dangerous bit

Amba1998 · 24/01/2025 08:55

Stormwhatnow · 24/01/2025 07:29

Public transport in cancelled all day in parts of Scotland today, schools are closed, all non emergency NHS appointments cancelled, no trains. People will die today, it's wild out there.
Sympathies OP I have to go to work today today (red zone). Don't have far to drive though.

That’s in a red zone. Public transport is working perfectly normal in my amber zone

Caravaggiouch · 24/01/2025 08:56

Cunningfungus · 24/01/2025 08:27

Damn why have I never thought of this before! All those hours sitting on a bus when I should have just chosen from the many similar alternatives at the bottom of my street.

Or, like, within a 2-3 mile radius assuming you’re able bodied? I live 3 miles from work, I don’t walk every day but if public transport isn’t running for any reason I can walk home in 45 mins or so, no drama.

Not an option for all but it’s not the ridiculous suggestion you’re claiming. Unless of course you can’t walk further than the end of your own street and assume every else also gets in their Range Rover to nip out for a pint of milk.

SwanSong1 · 24/01/2025 08:56

Oh for heavens sake. 🙄

Upstartled · 24/01/2025 08:56

I wonder if all these many alerts, for wind and cold and rain, which formerly would be known just as shitty weather, is achieving anything other than making people more cowardly?

A mental health day if it’s giving you anxiety?

Stop with this shite now will ya.

No wonder this country is sliding down the pan.

PrioritisePleasure24 · 24/01/2025 09:05

Funny how so many are eager to snipe at the op when not even realising that many places are closed and that public transport is cancelled. This storm is being taken very seriously in the worse affected areas.

Upstartled · 24/01/2025 09:10

The op isn't in the worst affected area, is she?

Longtimelurkerfinallyposts · 24/01/2025 09:12

I'm shocked at all the posters saying you should go to work even if you have a Red Weather Warning. The advice we're getting here is pretty explicit: do not travel anywhere unless you really can't help it. Responsible employers have all told people NOT to come to work today and lots of businesses/ shops (as well as schools, nurseries, and council-run services) are completely closed for the day. No bin collections, no buses or trains, no deliveries... Trade unions like Unite hospitality have said they will take action against any employers that try to force people to travel to work. There are branches, roof tiles and all sorts blowing around, and I don't blame people for feeling scared about driving!

This isn't just some "shitty weather" - this is being described as a "once in a generation storm" and we're forecast to have 80 MILES AN HOUR winds here today (and I live inland). I know this sounds difficult to imagine - because it really doesn't happen very often!

where are you? I am in an amber area and buses go as usual. Can you only leave the house by driving?

RitaFromTheRanch · 24/01/2025 09:14

No legitimate reason.

This is why the country is on its arse.

Upstartled · 24/01/2025 09:14

An Amber alert is pretty much a guide to acknowledge that there may be some disruption to your travel plans, secure anything that is loose around your home and generally be aware of your surroundings. Basically, things that people would do without being told on looking out of the window and seeing that it's very windy.
