Really unsure what a legitimate reason could be!? Was already off 3 days last week poorly...!

Police Scotland are saying that people should avoid travel in and to areas covered by the amber warning, it’s not just as simple as “red, stop; amber crack on”. The OP will have a better idea of local conditions and travel arrangements.

faithbuffy · 24/01/2025 09:51

Wind has got really bad here, amber warning. Felt like my windows were going to come in last night
Got a hospital appointment today that I absolutely cannot miss as it's an 18 month wait so I'm going out

biscuitsandbooks · 24/01/2025 09:51

@TheTimeHasComeMyLittleFriendsToTalkOfOtherThings yeah, it definitely varies from area to area.

We're on the west coast of Cumbria and it's hit 100mph not far away so I'm not surprised everything has shut down.

MyDeftDuck · 24/01/2025 10:01

If you cannot WFH then make the safest arrangements to travel as possible. But think on this.....how would it be if ever police officer, fire personnel, and ambulance personnel bleated "oooh, I can't go to work today, it's far too windy".

I think what this shows is that some people would try and use any excuse to get out of going to work.

Thegoatliesdownonbroadway · 24/01/2025 10:06

OP had 3 days off for the sniffles, I think thats the issue

HelloMrBond · 24/01/2025 07:27

It’s a windy day, not a Ruski nuke warning. Get a grip….

Depends where you are. Ireland and Scotland are getting a right battering.

Thegoatliesdownonbroadway · 24/01/2025 10:10

Here the sun is shining and there is a gentle swaying in the trees.

A leaf just fell off a tree

A leaf just fell off a tree

You're obviously not in one of the red / amber warning areas....
A massive tree has come down near us and is blocking the road.

bestcatlife · 24/01/2025 10:19

Does sound windy here to me, looking outside there doesn't appear to be much wind. But just checked Trainline and all trains going anywhere are cancelled! Very surreal.

bestcatlife · 24/01/2025 10:19

Doesn't *

Cynic17 · 24/01/2025 10:22

You don't. You pull yourself together and go to work. Or get public transport or a taxi. Be an adult, OP!

In lots of Amber areas public transport is cancelled completely.

Yep, not safe for the OP but safe for taxi drivers...

And in many places public transport is cancelled.

It's barely breezy here but who knows what the OP is looking at

Floatlikeafeather2 · 24/01/2025 10:27

Upstartled · 24/01/2025 08:50

Are you looking at gust speeds for your area and wind speeds in hers?

Nope. I'm looking at wind speed. However, at 11, she is due to go up to 78mph (just now revised from the 40s) and we are at 76mph. My point was just that it isn't cut and dried that it's safe if you're in an amber area and unsafe if you're in a red. I'm not going out, even though I'm "only" in an amber area, because I can judge for myself that I wouldn't be safe and I don't have to go anywhere. I would really love to go and see what the sea is doing (5mins walk away) but I'm not going to. There's plenty of flying debris plus the threat of being blown off my feet is very real. I walk with a stick. Aluminium sticks are lovely and light to use but, as has happened to me before, in the split second between lifting it up and putting it back down, a wind like this will knock it sideways and there you are, hitting the floor.

Zonder · 24/01/2025 10:31

Red alert maybe, not an amber alert. Hope you got to work ok.

thats such a handy suggestion, there are forever jobs with immediate starts advertised within a few mins walk of my home! I'm sure the OP will have just as much success

I'm sat in my car and my car is shaking with the wind, there's bins flying across the road and trees down
It honestly feels like my car is going to lift up

I'm shocked at all the posters saying you should go to work even if you have a Red Weather Warning. The advice we're getting here is pretty explicit: do not travel anywhere unless you really can't help it. Responsible employers have all told people NOT to come to work today and lots of businesses/ shops (as well as schools, nurseries, and council-run services) are completely closed for the day. No bin collections, no buses or trains, no deliveries... Trade unions like Unite hospitality have said they will take action against any employers that try to force people to travel to work. There are branches, roof tiles and all sorts blowing around, and I don't blame people for feeling scared about driving!

This isn't just some "shitty weather" - this is being described as a "once in a generation storm" and we're forecast to have 80 MILES AN HOUR winds here today (and I live inland). I know this sounds difficult to imagine - because it really doesn't happen very often!

Edited

Who said she should go work in a red weather warning? I don’t see that anywhere in this thread.

BaronessEllarawrosaurus · 24/01/2025 10:47

I'm in an amber area, everytime I check the wind is predicted lower and lower, buses are fine but trains aren't running. All schools open. Not noticed any issues at all. (I do work in walking distance of home but it's my day off)

housethatbuiltme · 24/01/2025 10:49

People saying just go, are you all from low lying built up cities?

Up hear in the mountains people are killed every year by debris in wind and the advice is usually not to travel unless absoloutly necessary.

Try getting bitch slapped by a trampoline traveling at 60mph.

Last year a large garden mirror fell out of the sky and exploded all over my garden, it hit with such force large shards of razor sharp glass where thrown over 3 houses... but yeah, just go stand in it to catch the bus.
